Dear Parents,
Let the games begin! This week our focus will be on sports in both the gym and the classroom. In addition to being a great tool for introducing colors, shapes, and sizes, sports are a fun way to promote teamwork and encourage gross motor skill development. Students will explore many types of sports throughout the week, including soccer, golf, basketball, football, and baseball. They will get to play with an assortment of sports balls in the gym and be introduced to the basic components of each game. Our sports theme extends into the classroom as we read Watch Me Throw the Ball during story time. Our science unit will include discussion of seasons and the sports that can be played during the winter months as we create fake snow and students will create a masterpiece with paint and a variety of different mini sports balls in art. These hands on activities are wonderful ways for children to explore their creativity while honing their fine motor skills. During rug time we unite the team with a good old fashion cheer:
I love sports, oh yes I do
Baseball, football, soccer too
Kicking, throwing, fun, fun, fun
Playing sports out in the sun!
I love sports, oh yes I do
Swimming, Basketball, Tennis too
Jumping, swinging, run, run, run
Playing sports is so much fun!
Preschool aged children often find it difficult to answer the question, "What did you do in school today" so we find that it helps to ask questions directly related to their activities. Ask your child what a soccer ball looks like and which is bigger, a baseball or a football. Have your child show you how to swing a baseball bat or a golf club and organize a game of their favorite sport with their friends. We strive to create an educational environment that promotes learning in both the classroom and living room, and sports are an active and exciting way for parents and children to learn and play together. Whether it is basketball, a foot race, soccer, or tee ball, we encourage you to take the time this summer to team up with your child and take to the field, court, yard, or playground. Go team!
Sincerely,
 Gair Morris Director
