Dear Educator:

Implementing RTI is a challenge in itself, but how do you screen and assess progress for English Language Learners? Some struggling ELLs may be on track in their first language but not in English, while others have not learned basic phonemic awareness and phonics skills in either language. The links below provide some ideas, from schools, districts, and researchers who have been working on this issue.

We're also offering special savings right now on our own reading intervention program, The Road to Reading. You can learn more about the program below.

We hope you enjoy this month's issue!

Best wishes,

Rosalind Iiams, Editor

Response to Intervention for ELLs

The Response to Intervention model has been shown to be effective for ELLs struggling with reading, whether conducted in Spanish or English [Linan-Thompson et al., 2006]. But it poses many issues for the already-burdened classroom teacher. How does a teacher who does not speak the student's language properly assess skills? How does she make instruction understandable for her ELLs? How does she effectively coordinate RTI with English language instruction? What teaching techniques have been proven to be especially useful in reading intervention for ELLs? Check out the links below to find out what works, and to get tips and techniques for working with your own ELLs.
