Headmaster's Greeting

The Power of Perseverance

We are at that time of the year when the novelty of a new year begins to wear off. The classroom, hallway, and lunchroom routines are well established. The textbooks are familiar, the computers banal, and even the iPads have lost their newness. At this point, school begins to become work and a new set of personal qualities begin to develop: diligence, industry, and perseverance.

There is a part in all of us that would choose to "just get by" with minimal effort. The temptation is to "just put in our time" and not press on to do our best. This is true for children as well as adults, and we must be ever vigilant to prevent that tendency from winning even a single day or hour.

God has blessed us all-every one of us-with innumerable talents and gifts that He would have us develop into useful skills and effectual abilities. It is exciting to watch and experience that development, but it does take work, hard work. That work is sometimes exciting and captivating, but oft times it is just work that requires attention to the task at hand even when it is not fun or entertaining.

Oh yes, there will yet be many memorable moments in the school year, but some of the best learning will come during those mundane minutes filled with repetition, recitation, and recollection. At such times, we must all remember that perseverance is praiseworthy.

Praise your child's hard work. Reward his/her recollection of math facts and history songs. Encourage him/her to catch your grammar mistakes. And rejoice together in the power of perseverance.

Pastor Heine,

Headmaster

Congratulations to 6th Grader Natalie Ledesma!

We congratulate MLS 6th grader Natalie Ledesma who competed in a "Trimathalon" last weekend and won 2nd place for the Houston region's 6th grade! Her scores will be submitted for a possible national award also! They had to score the tests twice because Natalie lost to the first place winner by only three points! Natalie won a silver medal and math software, which she donated to MLS. For information on this competition, visit http://www.mathnasiumtrimathlon.com/about.html.

Girls Volleyball

The Volleyball season has come to a close for the regular season. The girls all improved immensely and really played well in their last games against Salem Tomball. Thank you to our coaches - Mr. Nelson and Mr. and Mrs. Thacker.

The Varsity team will compete in the State Tournament on October 19 and 20 at Salem. Lutheran school teams from the Houston, Dallas, San Antonio and Austin areas will participate.
