Headmaster's Greeting |
ALL YOUR MIND
Mark 12:28-"You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength."
Dr. Gene Edward Veith, Jr., Provost at Patrick Henry College, explains, "Loving God with all your heart must refer to loving God with the will and emotions. Loving God with all your soul must refer to the personal relationship with Him which comes through faith. Loving God with all your strength must refer to serving Him in our actions and good works." Having thus dealt with three of the four directives, he then asks, "What does loving God with all your mind involve?"[i]
His answer to that question is a beautiful summary of what makes education at Memorial Lutheran School Christian. Veith writes, "The whole process of curiosity, questioning, and discovery can be a journey, full of wonder and praise, into the mind of God, who created everything. Whatever can be studied, whether human nature or the physical universe, is what it is because God willed it and made it. All [human inquiry] amounts to nothing less than discovering God's will."[ii]
Rightly understood, Christian education is as expansive as the mind of God. It is not limiting but liberating. It is not aimless skepticism but purposeful and open-minded inquiry into what is good, true, and beautiful. Christian education teaches children that truth exists, that beauty can be defined, and that there are objective standards by which good and evil can be judged. These criteria are not imposed but implied, not presupposed but revealed. Thank God for our minds with which we love Him and learn of His world.

Duke Talent Program for 4th - 6th grades |
We recently acknowledged our 7th grade students who qualified for the Duke University Talent Identification Program (TIP). There is also a special Duke Talent Search program for qualified 4th-6th graders who score in the 95th percentile on a grade-level standardized achievement test.
Congratulations to: 6th graders Natalie Ledesma and Matthew Girma; 5th graders Aislinn Bohot and Reese McDermott, and 4th graders Chloe Cooper, Meera Krishnan, Maryann Lamberson, Magdalena Obersat and Amanda Von Ruff.
Enrollment with Duke TIP opens for this age level on October 1. The parents of our qualifying students received a letter this week letting them know that their child qualified.
These students who already excel on grade-level tests will benefit from taking the eighth-grade level EXPLORE test through Duke TIP. Above-level EXPLORE testing provides insight into individual student academic abilities by providing personal measures in English, math, reading and science. The test also provides invaluable testing experience, which will serve these students in middle school, high school, and beyond.
We are proud of our MLS students who continue to excel academically! |
