Headmaster's Greeting |
CLASSICAL EDUCATION
Last week I explained our school slogan, Building a Strong Foundation. I noted that the spiritual foundation upon which we build is Jesus Christ, the Rock of our salvation. Educationally we build the minds of our students using the classical approach.
Classical education involves a philosophy, a curriculum, and a methodology. Philosophically the aim of classical education is to equip young minds to join in the "conversation with the past."[1] This philosophy leads us to curricular emphases such as history, literature, Latin, and logic. Also growing out of this philosophy is the methodology known as the trivium. To join the conversation with the past students must learn the concepts of rhetoric supported by the dialectical tools and established on the foundation of grammar.
All of this is not intended to leave our children in the past but to equip them for the future. Russell Kirk remarked that the truly educated student "will look backward to ancestors and forward to posterity."[2] Our goal, likewise, is to give students a broad view of life that equips them with the accumulated knowledge of the ages in order to tackle the problems and promises of the future. Thank you for joining us in this educational endeavor and for helping equip your children with knowledge from yesterday to face the challenges of tomorrow.

Parent Teacher League Meeting Monday, September 17 |
The Parent Teacher League meeting is this coming Monday, September 17. Pizza will be served at 5:30 p.m. and the meeting will begin at 6 p.m. Childcare will be available during the meeting. All parents should have received an evite to the meeting. If you plan to attend, please respond to the evite so that our PTL will know how much pizza to buy and how many staff members will be needed to baby sit during the meeting. Thank you for supporting MLS and the PTL!

Counselor's Corner |
Character Counts! at Memorial Lutheran School - RESPECT.
This month I have had great discussions with our students in Pre-K-8th regarding RESPECT. Prior to our activity we discussed how the word "respect" appears twice in our school expectations we say each morning in opening: "We will always be in uniform. We will always be on time. We will respect ourselves, our peers, and our school property. We will honor Pastors, Faculty, Staff, and our Parents with respect. We are responsible for our academic success." I really enjoyed the activities we did in each class!

Girls Volleyball |
Our MLS girls JV girls won two games out of three in a scrimmage against Epiphany on Thursday. They played Salem on Tuesday and lost two well-played games: 25-13 and 25-22. Each week they improve on their serving and hitting skills! The Varsity team played Trinity Downtown and lost two out of three games, but they continue to improve. They did not play yesterday, as Pilgrim forfeited, so that counts as a win!
Volleyball next week: Tuesday, September 18 - both teams are at Salem Lutheran in Tomball, JV at 4 and Varsity at 5 p.m.; Thursday, September 20 - both teams are at Trinity Klein Lutheran, JV at 5 and Varsity at 6 p.m.

Sweaters and Jackets |
With Fall approaching, the weather begins to get cooler. Please remember to label your children's jacket or sweater with their name inside. When the jackets or sweaters are left in the gym, hallway, or classroom it helps us to find the owner! In addition to the navy cardigans and sweater vests, Parker School Uniforms also has a great navy fleece jacket with the school logo that can be ordered. You can go online to parkersu.com and place an order. Our school code is HO201314. For students in Pre-School through 8th grade the school sweater for girls and navy vest for boys are a required part of the Chapel uniform beginning in November when it is cool. Many students have already been wearing them, and they look great!
