Grace Connection
...where real life... meets real faith December 2007
 Greetings!

This is my favorite time of year!  Yes, I like the lights and spending time with loved ones, but that's not the best part. I like giving gifts and receiving them, but the thing I really LOVE is that Christmas is all about my precious Savior, Jesus!

I'm excited to share December's Grace Connection with you ~ Pastor Joel has a Christmas message about how to keep life balanced during the Christmas season, Amy Pedison, co-leader of GraceLand ministry is our December Real People interview, and we've asked Amy to share how God worked at GraceLand Getaway. So take a few minutes out of all the Christmas preparations and enjoy Grace Connection.

The Mission...
The community of Grace is here to reach people for Christ and to help those who believe in Christ to become more like Him.
 Joel WaltersCelebrate Christmas

For most of us, the month of December climaxes around one significantly marked date on the calendar:  Christmas!  The entire month, if not the weeks preceding it, become a hectic rush to complete the ever growing list of "to-do's" and "must get done" before the entire structure collapses on the evening of the 24th.

Never has there been so much contradiction between "peace on earth, good will to men" and "I'm so stressed that I can't take it anymore".  The question for all of us is; which Christmas are we practicing?   Are we losing the real reason for the celebration in the mess of details and obligations that so often consume us?

Please allow me to offer a little help - and hope for the weary one during this special time of celebration.  It is sad to say that more than one of us has lost the true celebration of Christmas in the clutter that surrounds it.

  • Establish clear expectations for the entire family.  So often everyone has a different expectation for what should happen.  Extended family obligations are often filled with expectations that drain the Christmas spirit out of you.  Do yourself a favor and say no.
  • Set priorities!  There is no way you can do everything, so something is going to have to give.  Make sure you set your priorities based on what you want to accomplish, not what others expect you to do.
  • Set limitations!  This is almost the same as setting priorities, except that here you simply set boundaries that you won't cross.  For example, we won't spend more than a set amount of money on presents; we won't allow non-family parties to cut into family time; we won't put secular celebrations before our church and Christ-centered celebrations.
  • Don't be afraid to create new traditions that embrace the true celebration of Christmas.  So often our traditions become more important than the One we remember in celebration.  Give yourself the freedom to do it differently, and bring back the true spirit of Christmas.
  • Don't compete with others to see who has the most beautiful house, tree, wrapped presents, food, etc.  It's not about competition, it's about Christ.
  • Above all else, repeat it over and over again:  "Christ-mas".  It is the celebration of Christ, the Son of God who came into this world to be the sacrifice for our sins.  He is the guest of honor and the focus of the celebration.  He is the love of God put forth into this world so that we can have hope for a life after this.  He is the reason we celebrate.

It is my prayer that your Christmas is filled with the love of Christ, as we celebrate together the greatest gift the world has ever known.

 GraceLand Getaway!
"To God be the Glory, great things He has done!" has been resounding in my thoughts ever since we returned from GraceLand's first ever weekend retreat to Pine Cove Towers. God was obviously at work from the very beginning to bring this "wild idea" to reality.

Here are some responses from parents:

"I have prayed for an opportunity like this for my kids."

"God's timing of this retreat in my child's life could not have been more perfect."

As the weekend approached, God provided answered prayers in abundance, and we give Him all the glory for what He has done.

His provision for the weekend included:

v     Scholarships from generous donors, even up to the week before the Getaway, so His choice of kids could attend.

v     Excited, committed leaders to sacrificially give up their time to pour His love into these kids' lives.

v     Clear schedules and protected/restored health, so that all 36 kids and 7 leaders who signed up could attend!

v     Warm, beautiful weather & clear skies for all the fun outdoor activities.

v     Happy, secure kids with no homesickness.

v     Safety & protection in travel to & from Tyler and at camp.

v     Tremendous relationship-building times for leaders & kids and kids with one another.

v     Wonderful "Club" and "Cabin Reflection" times, where kids were strengthened in their relationships with Christ and encouraged to participate in His work.

The kids all had a blast, and the leaders enjoyed building relationships with the kids the most! One leader summed it up well by saying, "I got to build relationships with kids in a short amount of time that would have taken months to do on Sunday only.  It was awesome!" God provided an amazing weekend for our kids in so many ways, and we can't wait to go back next year, Lord willing!!

 Amy PedisonReal People

The following interview was conducted with Amy Pedison.  Amy serves God at Grace in co-leading the Sunday morning GraceLand ministry.  Amy and Paul have been married for 14 years and have 3 children.

1.  What has God been teaching you lately?

I'm learning a lot studying the life of Daniel this fall. Daniel sought God and glorified Him above all else, despite the costs and despite the influence of the culture around him to the contrary. I pray my life will reflect this kind of uncompromising loyalty, integrity and resolve.

2.  What is the most important thing you've learned about walking with God?

For me, it has been the importance of consistency in His Word & in prayer to hear from Him daily and the accountability to keep me there. I can have all the best intentions in the world, but for me, it takes getting together weekly with a group of ladies, a Life Group, etc. to study and share what He's teaching me to keep me focused and encouraged to walk in His ways and to love and serve Him wholeheartedly.

3.  How do you keep your time with God fresh?

I try my best to give Him the "first fruits" of my day, when I am the most alert and the least distracted. For me, this has always been before my family wakes up.

4.  Who was influential in your spiritual growth?

I'd have to say it was both my parents, Jann & Wendell Cantrell.  They didn't just "talk the talk", but they "walked the walk", showing me the importance of putting Him first, of consistent study of His Word, of obedience despite the costs, of serving Him joyfully and faithfully, and of living life for His glory.

5.  If you could experience an event in the Bible, which one would you choose?

I would love to have experienced God's majestic power and creativity in action when He spoke the world into existence.

6.  How has being in a Life Group at Grace impacted your life and the life of your family?

It has been through our involvement in different Small Groups at Grace that God has allowed us to build relationships and share community with our brothers & sisters in Christ. We have been able to rejoice with one another in the good times and encourage and pray for one another through the hard times. Paul and I are so thankful for how God has used these times to draw us closer to Him and closer to our dear friends as we walk this journey together.

8.  Some Day I'd like to...

Take our family on a mission trip.

Winter Retreat... Creating a Legacy Worth Leaving

I am excited about what our youth will get to experience this year at our annual Winter Retreat.  On Jan. 11, we will head to the Rockin' C Ranch in Lindale, TX (near Tyler) for a weekend where they will be challenged to recognize where they can use their talents and gifts right where God has them... in their youth group, in their schools, in their families, and in the lives of those they come into contact with each and every day.  We often think of a legacy as something we leave behind when we pass from this earth.  However, each day we have an opportunity to make an impact and an imprint on this world, therefore leaving a memory of us and how we related to others.

God has gifted us all differently.  We each have unique desires and abilities.  Our youth will be challenged to be leaders...leaders in their youth group, leaders in the classroom, and leaders in their other extracurricular activities.  They will hear teaching from the Scripture of how God uniquely gifted His servants in powerful ways to make a long-lasting impact for Him... leaving a legacy for generations that follow.

Not only will there be some time to contemplate what God has called us to do, but we'll have plenty of opportunities to enjoy the amenities and activities provided by the camp.  This should offer a great time of fun and fellowship with friends!

Register NOW!  We leave 1/11 and return 1/13.  Cost is $65/person.
