The following interview was conducted with Diana Abbott. Diana & her family have been at Grace for 18 years and is a staff member at Grace as Director of GEM Express Preschool and Kindergarten. Diana has been married to Blair for 23 years and they have three children.
What has God been teaching you lately?
God continues to teach me many things! Apparently, I am a slow learner. God continues to show me that I control very little in my life other than how I choose to conduct myself and respond to others and situations. In the women's Bible study here at Grace, we are studying Daniel. I have been very convicted that God has called us to live in the world but, not to live in a worldly fashion. It is a daily struggle.
What is the most important thing you've learned about walking with God?
I became a Christian at the age of eight. I can look back over my life and see the hand of God at work in my life over the years. God has been so faithful and has provided for me in many ways. I guess the most important thing I've learned is that God is faithful and He is sovereign. His will will be accomplished.
How do you keep your time with God fresh?
I think I keep my time with God fresh by being as genuine with God as I can be. He knows me like no one else does and loves me anyway in an extravagant way! I just really try to pour out my heart to God and take time to listen to Him and follow His leading.
Who was influential in your spiritual growth?
My Grandma Wheeler was a strong Christian woman and although I did not grow up in a Christian home, she was the person who introduced me to Christ. Although I grew up in Chicago and my grandma was in Pennsylvania, she remained a strong Christian influence in my life through the years. In addition, I had a great Youth Pastor who encouraged and challenged me in my teenage years. Blair has also been very influential in my spiritual growth throughout our marriage.
If you could experience an event in the Bible, which one would you choose?
I would have to choose the resurrection and events immediately following. I just think that must have been such an amazing time to be alive and to have this experience.
How has being in a Life Group at Grace impacted your life and the life of your family?
We have been involved in several small groups during our time at Grace. We have found these groups to be an encouragement to our spiritual growth and we have made many friendships we might not have otherwise made. We really enjoy the time of intimate fellowship in a group where we can share our needs and support others in their desire to walk closely with the Lord.
What is something the people of Grace would be surprised to know about you?
I played volleyball for my college. I went to Trinity College in Deerfield, IL and enjoyed playing on their team during my college years.
Some Day I'd like to... .travel to Italy to explore my Italian heritage.
