Grace Connection
...where real life... meets real faith October 2007
 Greetings!

Last week I had the privilege of traveling to Nashville to attend a communications conference.  It was GREAT!  We sat in general sessions and workshops soaking up information about the "latest and greatest" ~ it was all beneficial information.  But, while we listened intently learning about new technology, resources, artists and services, we were told over and over it is all pointless without Christ, because it is all about Him.

Maybe you find yourself so caught up in all the bells, whistles and detail designed to make your ministry to reach people for Christ and help those who already belive in Christ become more like Him more effective, that you've begun to lose focus on our precious Jesus.  Hebrews 12:1-2 says,  Therefore...let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily trips us up. And let us run with endurance the race God has set before us. We do this by keeping our eyes on Jesus, the champion who initiates and perfects our faith.  It's all about Jesus!

I'm excited to share October Grace Connection with you ~ Pastor Joel just returned from the Dominican Republic and shares a new kind of journey in Go Get it!, Caryl Lynn Penton, leader of Little Blessings ministry is our October Real People interview, and we've asked Pastor Blair to give us the latest news concerning the construction of Phase three building. So grab your cup of coffee and dig in to the Grace Connection.

The Mission...
The community of Grace is here to reach people for Christ and to help those who already believe in Christ to become more like Him.
 Joel WaltersGo Get it!

I love to travel.  I think it's the excitement of going to new places and experiencing things that I never have experienced before - seeing things that before I could have only imagined.  Sounds a lot like faith, doesn't it?  It is by faith that we experience what at one time was only a wish or desire.  It is through the journey of faith that vision becomes reality.

Last week the family of Grace began a study in the book of Joshua, through which we are seeking God's leading as we claim all that God has promised us as His children.  It is a journey of faith.  It is also a very descriptive journey of our lives and of our church.  You see, just as God told the Israelites what was theirs and how to claim it, so God has told us what is ours and he has told us to go out in faith and claim it.

I believe that God has called us to reach our community for Christ.  He has, through the promises of his word given us this "land" to claim.  But he has also said that we must go out and make the commitment and do the work of claiming it.  This is where faith comes in.  Even as Joshua announced to the Hebrews that they would be crossing the Jordan river in three days to occupy the land, he said "begin now to make provision for the crossing"(Joshua 1:10).   We have been challenged by our "For Such a Time as This" campaign to make provisions for the ministry that God has given us for the future.  Our leadership board has laid out an additional challenge (see Pastor Blair's article) for us to embrace as we move into the land of promise.  The question for us is; what will we do?  As we learned in our study of Joshua, there were two primary groups of people at this time in the history of Israel:  those who entered the Promised Land by faith, and those who died in the wilderness, never having entered the Promised Land because of their unbelief.  Which group are we?

I trust that you have seen the vision:  the people around us for whom Jesus Christ came.  The challenge to move ahead with the ministry/building campaign that is before us is great.  But I believe that God has given us the land.  God has given us the resources to fulfill what he has called us to do.  Will we move out in faith and claim it for him?  Our study in the book of Joshua will give us both the understanding and the courage to move into the land and claim it for the Kingdom of God.   Let's go get it!

 Caryl Lynn PentonReal People

The following interview was conducted with Caryl Lynn Penton.  Caryl Lynn serves God at Grace in the Little Blessings ministry (0-4 year olds).  Caryl Lynn is married to Huey and has one daughter, three sons, 12 grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

1.  What has God been teaching you lately?
There is no such thing as retirement for the Christian. As long as you are still breathing God wants to use you to bless others.

2.  What is the most important thing you've learned about walking with God?

That everyday He is waiting and longing for me to join Him so we can have fellowship together on and throughout my daily walk. He won't bug me, He wants me to want to spend personal time with Him. He just waits.

3.  How do you keep your time with God fresh?

Daily journaling. Spending time in the Psalms and Proverbs everyday.

4.  Who was influential in your spiritual growth?

Dr. Robert B. Somerville my past EV Free Church pastor from Visalia, CA. He was a wonderful teaching pastor and excellent Biblical counseling teacher/counselor.

5.  If you could experience an event in the Bible, which one would you choose?

Time at Mary and Martha's house with Jesus. I would have been the one scolded. If I don't watch it I let STUFF get in the way.

6.  How has being in a Life Group at Grace impacted your life and the life of your family?

Huey and I need the fellowship and encouragement we receive in a Life Group. We never feel alone (out there on a limb all by ourselves), Our small group has shown us such love and cared for us so many times. We have such good friends from this Life Group.

8.  Some Day I'd like to...

#1-My body has pretty much taken me past my opportunity to do anymore of my real dreams of going or doing something. #2-This wish (desire of my heart) sounds pretty worldy but I would like to have a new French Door in the place of my very old Sliding door. This would make our wonderful patio and backyard more pleasurable. The outdoors would become more inside our little cottage home. We so enjoy God's creatures, the little birds and our bird houses are always full.

For Such a Time as This For Such a Time as This

September 16th, members of Grace committed to the following:

"...authorization of a debt service level of up to $13,000 per month to fund construction and payoff of the Phase 3 ministry facility."

Since the February authorization of a lower debt service level, the following factors have impacted the costs associated with Phase 3:

-          Changing costs associated with construction

-          Higher interest rates for funding

-          Banking requirements for up front cash

-          Anticipated higher estimates now that we have better drawings of and details about the facility

To follow God's leading for ministry at Grace, and proceed with Phase 3 construction, the building team and church board needed to know that funds were available to build the facility presented during the "For Such A Time As This" campaign last Autumn.  We selected a bank and are in the process of finalizing the loan to build Phase 3 of the Master Plan.  Based on the terms proposed by the bank and without authorization for the additional debt service level, we anticipated only being able to fund the outside walls of the Phase 3 facility.   This would actually take us backward in the ministry that Grace would be able to provide and add expense to the overall process associated with building out Phase 3 and the Master Plan.

The commitment to authorize the new debt service level will allow the finance and building teams to move forward with plans to begin construction of Phase 3 in January 2008.  And while we have authorized the larger debt service level, the church board agreed we should challenge the body of Grace to pay off the existing mortgage of approximately $150,000 by the end of 2007, and raise another $150,000 in pledges toward the "For Such A Time As This" campaign (through December 2009).  Accomplishing these goals will allow us to enter into permanent loan financing with a debt service level of approximately $11,000 per month.  The body will be hearing more about how we can all participate in the coming weeks.

As we discuss numbers, construction and facility, I want to remind all of us of the message that Pastor Joel has consistently taught throughout this building process.  "For Such A Time As This" is not about a building, rather it is about ministry and seeing God work in and through His people, each of us. Having additional space allows us to reach and impact more children and families through AWANA, GraceLand and GEM Express.  It allows us to expand the adult education ministry through Grace Bible Fellowships.  It will allow us to do things God has not yet revealed.

Please don't hesitate to contact me if you have questions about this commitment or how you can be involved.  As we step out in faith and sacrifice, trusting God to provide all our needs, as we invite others to join us in ministry at Grace, as we live the life God calls us to live before our neighbors and co-workers, God will build up His Kingdom and He'll use each of us to accomplish His will.

GEM Express Preschool and Kindergarten

GEM Express Preschool & Kindergarten has started the seventh year of ministry to families in our community with preschool and kindergarten aged children.  We are currently ministering to 114 students.  This year we added a PE/Creative movement class to our program.  In addition, Music and Spanish classes are offered as a special component of our weekday program.  It is such a blessing to gather the children for our weekly chapel time and sing worship songs to the Lord!  We consider it a great blessing to work alongside parents in the "training up" of their children.  Our greatest desire is to share God's love with the families who participate in the GEM program.  Thank you for your prayers.  We are still in need of a couple of prayer partners for GEM staff members.  Contact the GEM office at diana@grace-efc.org or (972)727-0071 if you are interested in participating in this prayer ministry.

October 19, 6:00 - 9:00 PM ...GEM Express Preschool & Kindergarten will host the annual dinner and auction-"Lights! Camera! Auction!"  Purchase your tickets now!
