"Success is neither magical nor mysterious. Success is the natural consequence of consistently applying the basic fundamentals." Jim Rohn
I always chuckle when I read the words of a self-help book title or on a website the "Secrets of Success" as if the individual has made some amazing discovery that no-one else has ever thought of before. Are there really any secrets? There have been some amazing breakthroughs in understanding how the mind works and its influence on our behaviours.
Creating success in life is actually very simple. One of my favourite quotes is "Luck is a matter of chance but success is a matter of choice". From what I've learnt through reading, my own experience and working with clients who want to become more successful in career, relationships, finance or some other area of their lives, these are some of the simple principles to creating success.
7 Simple things every individual can do to help them create success
1. Motivation towards success. You have to really desire it. It has to be a strong desire. The kind of desire that pushes you through obstacles and difficulties. You must be hungry for it. Some people spend their lives avoiding pain, discomfort and insecurity. This is a reactive life not a proactive life!
2. A belief that you can succeed. If you don't believe in yourself then no-one else will. There is not a human being who has fully realised their total potential. Everyone can be more, do more and have more. Without that belief you will only ever exist in the comfort zone and the world of average. Being average is where the best of the worst meet with the worst of the best. Your belief will determine where you exist!
3. A clear understanding of what success means to you. Have you defined success for yourself or have you allowed society, family, the company or advertising to define it for you. Often when people don't follow through on their goals for success it's because deep down in their hearts they know it's not really what they want. Get clarity on what success means for you!
4. Gain the knowledge you need to become more successful. They say that knowledge is power but there is probably more to it than that. There are many people in the world today with tertiary education and degrees who are not successful. You need to understand that knowledge and more importantly how to apply it. If you want to be a successful business owner, consultant, sales person, get a promotion, get into the stock market, investment properties, then that will not happen at your current level of understanding. Remember, there are many ways you can gain knowledge: formally, informally, self learning or experientially. All are valid. Welcome to the learning curve!
5. Learn from others who have been successful. Talk to successful people, read books about successful people in your field and others, find a mentor, get a success coach and see what you can learn. Why reinvent the wheel!
6. Learn from your mistakes and failures. The path to success is not always smooth. We have to have strategies in place to ensure we manage the obstacles or setbacks that come our way. Your response to the failure or mistake is actually far more important than the mistake or failure itself. I help clients take the judgement out of those experiences. Reframing the experience into one we view as feedback is always helpful and assists people to move on.
7. Make right choices. The success you create in your life will be the result of choices you make. If you want to be successful but choose to go out partying all the time robs you. Choosing the company you keep. Choosing to get out of bed instead of hitting the snooze button again. Choosing to make that one more call to a prospect. Choosing to read a book instead of mindlessly sitting in front of the TV. Simple choices really but they all add up to make a difference. Are your life choices helping you create success or creating a power drain?
