Personal Growth Tips

Hi

Following on from a previous newsletter (see below) here is the second instalment of  What I've learnt about human beings and success in 5,000 hours.

No.2  Nothing happens without action - small steps are better than doing nothing

It is almost a ridiculous statement isn't it? Of course nothing happens without action. But not everyone moves into action. We see that all the time with family members, work colleagues and friends. Why?

FIVE REASONS why people don't get started

  1. Procrastination is the most obvious one. The dictionary says procrastination is 'to put off till another day or time; defer; delay'. In the self evaluation process of coaching we ask about 30 important questions. One of those is 'do I have the habit of Procrastination?' Out of the 500 people I've coached, only about 5 said NO. We soon found out though possibly that wasn't the correct answer. Everyone procrastinates about something. Dishes, cleaning, tax, having that important but difficult conversation with someone. We procrastinate because we are rewarded in some way to put the task off till another time. The secret is to find out what that reward is and compare it to the reward of actually doing the task. The benefits of action are always greater in the long run than inaction.
  2. Not chunking down. Some tasks are too big. Take de-cluttering the house for example. Looking at the lounge, bedroom, study and garage can be overwhelming if you are a clutter or hoarder. Best to start small. Maybe the dining room table and keep that clear. Or the desk in the office. They say the best way to eat and elephant is one mouthful at a time. One great little trick I use is, to ensure the first step my clients take in achieving their goals is one that can be done in 24 to 48 hours. At least they are off the starting block.
  3. Being double minded. A proverb says 'A double minded person is unstable in all their ways'. If you are vacillating between two positions it debilitates you. Get off the fence. Take some action.
  4. Indecision. What's stopping you from making a decision to begin? Lack of clarity. Fear of failure. Some people are cripple by the fear of making a mistake. Especially if they are a perfectionist. 'If it can't be done perfectly then I won't begin. I'd hate to be seen as a failure'. The failure is not in attempting, the failure is doing nothing. The best way of framing life is that there is no such thing as a failure only a learning experience. That takes the judgement out of it.
  5. Analysis paralysis. It's good to do your research. It's good to analyse all options but some people get stuck because they spend endless hours going over and over the variety of options and researching. Move that thinking into action.

, IS IT TIME TO  GET CRACKING AND JUST DO IT.

13 Ways To Stay Stressed

stressAre you worried now about how to stay stressed? You'll have no trouble if you practice the following clinically proven methods:

  1. NEVER EXERCISE. Exercise wastes a lot of time that could be spent worrying.
  2. EAT ANYTHING YOU WANT. Hey, if cigarette smoke can't cleanse your system, a balanced diet isn't likely to.
  3. GAIN WEIGHT. Work hard at staying at least 25 pounds over your recommended weight.
  4. TAKE PLENTY OF STIMULANTS. The old standards of caffeine, nicotine, sugar, and cola will continue to do the job just fine.
  5. GET RID OF YOUR SOCIAL SUPPORT SYSTEM. Let the few friends who are willing to tolerate you know that concern yourself with friendships only if you have time, and you never have time. If a few people persist in trying to be your friend, avoid them.
  6. PERSONALIZE ALL CRITICISM. Anyone who criticizes any aspect of your work, family, dog, house, or car is mounting a personal attack. Don't take time to listen, be offended, then return the attack!
  7. MALES AND FEMALES ALIKE - BE MACHO. Never ever ask for help, and if you want it done right, do it yourself!
  8. BECOME A WORKAHOLIC. Put work before everything else, and be sure to take work home evenings and weekends. Keep reminding yourself that vacations are for sissies.
  9. DISCARD GOOD TIME MANAGEMENT SKILLS. Schedule in more activities every day than you can possibly get done and then worry about it all whenever you get a chance.
  10. PROCRASTINATE. Putting things off to the last second always produces a marvellous amount of stress.
  11. WORRY ABOUT THINGS YOU CAN'T CONTROL. Worry about the stock market, earthquakes, the approaching Ice Age, you know, all the big issues.
  12. BECOME NOT ONLY A PERFECTIONIST BUT SET IMPOSSIBLY HIGH STANDARDS......and either beat yourself up, or feel guilty, depressed, discouraged, and/or inadequate when you don't meet them.
  13. THROW OUT YOUR SENSE OF HUMOR. Staying stressed is no laughing matter, and it shouldn't be treated as one.
SUMMARY: Here is what I've learnt about human beings and success in 5,000 hours

  1. Anything is possible - the biggest hindrance to that are the limitations we place on ourselves
  2. Nothing happens without action - small steps are better than doing nothing
  3. Plans and strategies make your action more effective - fail to plan; plan to fail
  4. Success is simple - life wasn't meant to be complicated
  5. Commitment and persistence is what takes you to the finishing line - quitters never win; winners never quit
  6. If you don' reward yourself you'll burnout - celebrate your successes
  7. Accountability is the missing link in the personal development industry - ask anyone who uses a personal trainer
  8. Without a compelling future your life progress is greatly reduced - a blank canvass will keep you stuck
  9. There is no such thing as bad self awareness - understanding your weaknesses is as important as knowing your strengths
  10. Being present ensures your life will be more enjoyable - turn off auto-pilot and begin living consciously
  11. Everyone needs to define success for themselves - don't let others determine how your life turns out
  12. For every obstacle there will always be several options to overcome it - creative thinking finds solutions
  13. It's essential to write down the goals and dreams you have and review them regularly - a great key to success
  14. Sh*t happens.....deal with it anyway - facing challenges makes you stronger
  15. Every human being can do more, be more and have more - no-one is living to their fullest potential.

Anthony was recommended to me in glowing terms by a trusted friend and I too cannot speak highly enough of Anthony's great skills and expertise  as a truly wonderful coach.  Over the course of the 12 week programme, I learned so much about myself and grew greatly in confidence, understanding and focus. I consider that the insights I have gained will be absolutely invaluable in guiding me to a bigger, better and happier life, where I feel in control and genuinely enthusiastic about the future.

Every session with Anthony was thoroughly enjoyable but at the same time stimulating and thought-provoking. He gave me new tools to think with and to gradually change behaviours and grow. Anthony is very gifted in being able to discern and interpret in concrete ways what you are struggling to express, in giving you the sort of receptive audience that allows you to be honest with yourself and in helping you to see past difficulties in a new and more optimistic light.

I would whole-heartedly recommend Anthony as a coach and am enormously grateful to him for helping me gain a far greater understanding of and insight into my life.

Special Counsel
