Anthony Venn-Brown - Author - Professional Coach - Speaker

Greetings!

I know some of my UK friends will have a chuckle at the title of this newsletter.

The first time I came across the term self-awareness, I was a preacher back in the mid 80's. I remember thinking how weird it was to talk about being self-aware. Of course I was self-aware, I thought, everyone is, how could you not be aware of yourself? Little did I know how unconscious I was of so many things about me.

For example: Most of my life I wasn't aware that I wrote reasonably well. It wasn't till I began getting emails from readers of my autobiography saying things like 'I haven't read a book since I left school but I've read your book three times' or 'I read your book in one sitting, I couldn't put it down' that I became conscious of a talent. With this new awareness I now write with more confidence and attempt things I'd previously avoid. See how useful self-awareness is?

Self-Awareness

The old adages KNOW THYSELF and TO THINE OWN SELF BE TRUE  are timeless pieces of advice. If we are not aware of the undercurrents that affect our life-voyage, then we cannot steer accordingly. Not knowing how our unconscious currents affect our decisions and behaviour, we may believe we are heading in the right direction when in fact those conscious decisions are being subtly sabotaged at every turn by what we do not know about ourselves.

Do you know people who are not self-aware?  We all know people who are not very self-aware. They are not aware of their impact on others or the way they communicate.  Some live with same patterns of behaviour never becoming conscious they have the power to change their lives.

In the book 'Leadership and Self - Deception: Getting out of the Box' the author tells the story of a man who finally gets the position he has always wanted with the company he always wanted to work for. His first day is spent is an induction with the CEO. He is very excited to be given and entire day with this highly respected man. The CEO opens the conversation with 'Tom, you have a problem. But that is not the problem. The problem is you don't know you have a problem. But that is what we will working on while you are here with the company'. Imagine a conversation like that with your CEO on the first day of a new career move. The rest of the book talks about how Bud (the CEO) takes Tom on a journey of increased self-awareness. And of course, in the process I became more self-aware.

The very first level self-awareness is understanding things about ourselves such as personality type, communication skills, strengths, weakness, the energy we create, our values and beliefs, passions and so on.

But there is an even deeper level of self awareness. It's often given different namessuch as inner self, higher self, true self or authentic self. but it's really the same thing. The very essence of who you are, which is deeper than the physical, emotional or psychological.  When a person discovers that everything changes.  You live in greater harmony, a more empowered life where you can begin to experience your true potential.

As a coach I love facilitating that journey of self-discovery for others and watch the transformation that begins to occur. First step is to stop, turn off the autopilot and begin thinking consciously and reflectively.

The Johari Window is a good model that helps us understand ourselves better.

FINDING YOURSELF
Derek Walcott

The time will come when, with elation, you will greet yourself arriving at your own door, at your own mirror, and each will smile at the others welcome.

And say, sit here. Eat.

You will love again the stranger who was yourself, give wine.
Give bread.  Give back your heart to itself, to the stranger who has loved you all your life, whom you ignored for another, who knows you by heart.

Take down the love letters from the bookshelf, the photographs, the desperate notes, peel your own image from the mirror.
Sit.
Feast on your life.

Anthony's experience, patience, and coaching ability brought an exciting session into my home office for 12 weeks.  I rarely look forward to working on personal growth, but Anthony's style and the 'Dare to be Your Best' workbook allowed me to take a closer look at my core beliefs and weaknesses in a totally safe non judgemental atmosphere bringing about self change that I can rely on to come into play when needed.   Although, there is much work ahead to complete before reaching some of my goals I feel stronger that the tools necessary to keep me on a solid path and provide motivation and understanding have been re-established on one hand and re-tooled on another.  Coaching has provided the ground work for me to retake control in a positive growth oriented manner.  Reconsidering and revamping my core beliefs has been a gift I will cherish for many years to come.  Understanding that I already have the answers and having given me the permission to tap into this inner source with trust and confidence was like having Christmas in July!  Thank you Anthony - this work in progress continues.

During the course of the 12-week "Dare to Be Your Best" program, I experienced a sustained, cumulative positive effect on my growth as an integrated personality.  Anthony's coaching has given me clarity of purpose. It also allowed me to focus on understanding myself (my strengths and weakness, my limitations and my gifts). I gained the insight to take action in my own and others' best interests.  I had already achieved 121 of my dreams/goals by the end of the program.   It has been a truly productive period at this transitional time in my life.  I would most highly recommend PSA coaching to anyone interested in targeted growth in any and all aspects of life. It was well worth the investment of my time and effort to set my course for the next decade and the rest of my life as well.
