Do you HAVE to be successful?
The short answer is no. You don't have to be or do anything that isn't right for YOU. But more importantly what is success?
When asking people to define success and what goals they want to achieve, people usually go for the things they have been told will make them happy. Some coaching programs begin by asking people what they want to achieve, what goals do they want to work on. Name three things you would like to have in your life. People typically come up with such generic things as:
People usually have a conditioned concept of success. This has been given to them by socialization, family influences and marketing. They have never really defined success for themselves. Are they living someone else's dream?
"You can climb the ladder of success only to find it's against the wrong wall."
Personal Success Australia believes it's important for individuals to define what success really means for them. That's why we spend so much time in the "Dare to be Your Best" program ensuring our clients are clear about their values and beliefs BEFORE we do any goal setting. During this process a person who has sold their soul to the corporate world may discover what they really want is to have a place in the country with a slower pace of life and some chickens. Or another might find out that they can live a more rewarding a fulfilling life as a single person. Another may become aware that personal fulfillment is much higher on their value list than financial wealth and they will only ever be happy living a life that is making a difference on the planet. For one person success is a mansion to another it's owning a home and not renting. Success to one person is the latest BMW yet to another it's owning a car (or one that doesn't break down).
With this new level of self-awareness we can then paint a clear picture which is in harmony with their values and create goals to achieve that.
There are numerous definitions of success but Personal Success Australia's definition is "Success is the progressive realisation of your predetermined and worthwhile personal goals."
Exercise:

A Life of Unlearning - A Journey to Find the Truth is Australia's Brokeback Mountain and Ted Haggard stories rolled into one. It's a behind the scenes look into the life of a high profile preacher who, believing being gay made him unacceptable to God and others, struggles to resolve his homosexuality and his Christian beliefs. Ultimately, this honest account is as story of resolution, the impact the author's courage has on others and what it means to live authentically.
"Human stories, like the one in these pages, play a part in advancing understanding and acceptance. It is the story of a quest to find not only self-acceptance but one of the most powerful forces in nature-human love.."
The Hon. Michael Kirby
