Paws in the Park is March 28!
There's still time to register for fundraising walk

Paws in the Park 2009The countdown to Paws in the Park has officially begun, with only 28 days to go until the fun commences at Kit Carson Park!

There's still time to register online at www.firstgiving.com/ehs, or register on the day of the event by downloading a pledge form HERE and bringing it to the walk. Registration is free, and all walkers will receive incentive prizes based on dollars raised, starting at $50. Special prizes will be awarded to contest winners and the top individual and pack fundraisers.

Paws in the Park is sure to be a tail-wagging, howling good time for people and pets alike.
Festivities will begin with registration and a meet and greet at 8 a.m. At 9 a.m., walkers and their canine companions will embark on either a 1.5- or 2.5-mile course.

Wet T-shirt contestThe post-walk celebration gets started at 10:15 a.m. with dog-gone fun, free entry contests including a wet T-shirt contest (for the dogs, of course!) and "K-9's Got Talent" showcase where dogs can show off their unique, difficult and downright funny talents. There also will be a raffle, Paw expo, games, food and pet confidence-building course.

Special guests include "Buns of Steel" series star Tamilee Webb, who will lead dogs and their people through a quick routine to get everyone pumped up before the walk. Also making an appearance is best-selling author Richard Lederer, who will be on hand with his newest books. Heather Myers of San Diego 6 The CW will serve as master of ceremonies, and Gary Trice, San Diego's "Classic Rocking DJ," will provide music.

Special thanks to our "Head of the Pack" sponsors: San Diego Suburban News, Miramar Kitchen and Bath, California Veterinary Specialists, Rincon, Grande Laundry Place, San Diego County Credit Union, Petco Foundation, and Cindy Waasdorp

Paws in the Park is from 8 a.m. to noon March 28 at Kit Carson Park, 3333 Bear Valley Parkway in Escondido. For more information, call (760) 888-2235.
Help animals in need while shopping
Treasures abound at our monthly bazaars

Bazaar
Our monthly bazaars offer treasure hunters the opportunity to help animals in need while shopping! The bazaars will be held on the first Saturday of every month through July (rain will cancel the event).

Our next bazaar is from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. March 6 at the shelter, 3450 E. Valley Parkway. Various vendors will be selling at the event, and a variety of items will be available for purchase, including books, crafts, clothes, jewelry and items for pets.

And, of course, the Escondido Humane Society Adoption Center will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., so you can even find a four-legged treasure to add to your family!

Any individuals or teams who have registered for Paws in the Park are invited to host a booth at no cost to them to help raise money for their efforts. Booth space is $15 for all other vendors.

Call (714) 609-0799 or e-mail boughdadly@aol.com for a vendor application. Applications also can be downloaded HERE.
Make the cut as a groomer
Our dog and cat grooming classes will show you how!

GroomingPet owners who have always wanted to brush, comb, clip and wash their own pets can learn how at two upcoming Adult Education classes at the Escondido Humane Society.

The dog and cat grooming classes will teach pet owners how to maintain a happy, healthy - and huggable! - house pet and save money on trips to the groomer. Susan Divine-Sholar, head instructor at the California School of Dog Grooming and licensed American Kennel Club judge, will lead both courses.

The classes will be held on March 6 at the Escondido Humane Society, 3450 E. Valley Parkway. The dog grooming class is from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.; the cat grooming class will follow from 1 to 3 p.m. Cost is $40 for one class, $60 for both.

To enroll, call Ina Shookhoff, director of education, at (760) 888-2261 or e-mail education@escondidohumanesociety.org.

Spring has almost sprung ...
... which means kitten season is just around the corner!

KittenSpringtime brings longer days, warmer temperatures, flowers in bloom ... and kittens and puppies!

That's right: kitten and puppy season will be here soon, bringing with it several needs here at the Escondido Humane Society.

We are in need of canned cat food, canned dog food, small bottles and baby food. And, of course, we would appreciate a donation of your time. If you would like to foster puppies and kittens for the Escondido Humane Society, please e-mail stacif@escondidohumanesociety.org.

Give love and care to terminally ill animals in their final days

EHS hospice care
Occasionally, the Escondido Humane Society rescues an animal who has a terminal illness, such as cancer or a birth defect, but who is otherwise happy and free from pain.

These animals benefit from our hospice care program, where terminally ill animals who still have happy weeks or months ahead live out their remaining days in the comfort of a home so we are sure that they experienced love and happiness in their life.

It takes an especially brave foster family to accept these animals, but we promise to cry right with you when it's time to say goodbye. And while it can be difficult, it's an incredibly rewarding feeling to know that you helped give an animal love in his or her life, no matter how short it may be.

If you would like to learn more about becoming a foster home for pets in need of hospice care, please e-mail foster@escondidohumanesociety.org.
March featured pet: Boss
Boss is teaching us about the forgiving nature of dogs

Boss
Boss is one handsome boy who embodies the beautiful, forgiving nature of dogs. Boss endured cruel treatment at the hands of a human before being rescued by the Escondido Humane Society, and yet he truly seems to have the ability to forgive and move on. He doesn't appear to care about the left eye he once had ... life is fun again, and it's much better to just go out for walks and enjoy lots of attention.

Boss is a work in progress: he is big, strong and enthusiastic, and he is learning how to walk nicely Bosson a leash and sit for treats. He greets new human friends with joy, and he appears to be friendly toward other dogs, though he is still very excited when he sees them. A loving home with a cozy dog bed is just what the doctor ordered for our sweet Boss. Come visit Boss and see for yourself what a great guy he is ... he may be just the pup you have been searching for, and this boy really deserves a better life.

Meet him at the Escondido Humane Society, or call (760) 888-2275 and ask for Boss, ID # 45248.

Luna's (aka Biscuit) Happy Tail
As told by her new family

Luna Happy TailJust wanted to give you all an update on our adoption. My Mom and I came to the Escondido Humane Society on Aug. 27, 2009, in hopes of finding a kitten. We met a few cute kitties, but when we met Biscuit we knew we had found the one. We were helped by the lovely adoption counselor, Barbara, and in no time we had a new addition to our family.

At first Biscuit, whom we renamed Luna, was very timid and scared, but in no time her true personality emerged. She is a very sweet, playful, and curious kitty. She is quite unlike any cat we have ever had. For instance, her favorite thing to do is to play fetch! A close second is lying on laps. Luna loves to be around people and is very friendly. She is quite the diva and loves to be the center of attention. Her only fault is that she is very mischievous and likes to find things to get into that she's not supposed to. But even then, we can't get mad at her because she is so funny and cute. To be honest, she has us wrapped around her little paw.

We are so happy to have her in our lives, and she seems to be very happy, too. She runs to the door when we come home, and we can't wait to see her. We love her so much, and we want to thank all of you at the Escondido Humane Society for giving us Luna, our treasure.
