Tails at Twilight a great success!
Gala raised much-needed funds for our animals
 Tails at Twilight 2009
Nearly 200 people and their well-dressed canine companions filled a sold-out room at Orfila Winery on Oct. 17 for our 16th annual Tails at Twilight gala.

The event raised funds for animals currently in the Humane Society's care, as well as the thousands more that will come to the shelter this year in need of a safe haven and new homes.

Just because Tails at Twilight is over doesn't mean the fun and fundraising have to stop. We will be having a "Second Chance Online Auction" in the coming weeks to help raise more money for animals in need. The auction will include high-end jewelry, artwork and a signed Michael Jordan jersey. Check our Web site for details in the coming weeks.
Richard Lederer is coming to EHS!

November is Adopt-A-Senior-Pet Month
We're celebrating by cutting senior pets' adoption fees
 Sara
Sadly, older pets often are overlooked by their younger counterparts, but these precious pets deserve to live out their golden years in loving homes.

To help them find their new families, we are cutting seniors' adoption fees in half in November, which is Adopt-A-Senior-Pet Month. That means you can adopt any animal older than 7 years, such as Sara (pictured here), for just $27.50! Adoption fee includes microchip, up-to-date vaccinations, spay or neuter, and more. Log on to www.escondidohumanesociety.org to meet our adoptable seniors, and call our Adoption Center at (760) 888-2247 for more information.
Be vigilant about dog fighting
Learn how with these tips

Labrador retrieverConvicted dogfighter Michael Vick and his Philadelphia Eagles are coming to San Diego Nov. 15 to take on our hometown Chargers at Qualcomm Stadium.

With his visit just around the corner, it is important to note that Vick has entered into a relationship with the Humane Society of the United States, which is in no way affiliated with the Escondido Humane Society. We are a fully independent, nonprofit organization. Though we work cooperatively with many other organizations with similar missions, we receive no funding from other humane societies (such as the San Diego Humane Society, which is also an independent organization), umbrella organizations (including the Humane Society of the United States and American Humane), or state or national governments.

It is also a good opportunity to talk about how you can help prevent dog fighting in your own community. Here are some tips and things to look for:

Keep your eyes and ears open. Street fighting is on the rise and can be difficult to stop. Keep an eye out for large gatherings, muscular dogs or dogs with cropped ears, and the sound of dogs fighting.

Protect your pets. Don't let your animals outside without supervision, and make sure they are microchipped and have proper identification tags.

Educate others in your community about dog fighting and teach your children to respect and be kind to animals.

If you suspect that dog fighting is happening in your community, contact Escondido Humane Society Animal Control at (760) 888-BARK.
Roxy's Happy Tail
As told by her new family
 Roxy
For many years, I lived alone ... and focused almost exclusively on my work. At one point, the U-T featured me as part of a group of people who did little else but work; before Roxy (named "Goldie" when she was at the Escondido Humane Society), I easily worked 65+ hrs/wk.

It was a bit of a reality check. For the next year, I thought of getting a dog. I was concerned it would be too drastic a change for me as my choices would need to be centered on my dog. It took several months of searching around for the right dog on the Internet and at the area rescue shelters. And then, just before Thanksgiving, I came to your facility for the first time; I saw her sitting quietly in the back of the kennel - almost missing her because she was so quiet. We connected more than any other dog I had been considering so I brought her home. I am truly thankful ... she changed my life. Roxy has brought an immense amount of joy and - unexpectedly - a level of balance into my life. I work closer to 45 hours per week now and weekends are to play ... with her. Although it might seem to you that I gave her a home ... she gave me my life. I have such GREAT joy when we spend time together. She works with me, plays with me, chills with me.

Roxy was frightened, cowering and insecure - uncertain about everything when she first came home. Today, she is confident and seemingly always smiling! She hikes throughout various trails in San Diego, sails out on the Bay, has play dates twice a week with friends and their dogs and loves to herd the sheep, goats and horses at my mother's farm. I produce music videos, film at concerts and festivals and create education productions. Roxy travels with me to many of the festivals, attending as the "VIP Dog" backstage, hanging with the artists and often upstaging the musicians and vocalists with their fans!

Most importantly, as I teach a Kid's Club for a local church group, she comes every week ... gentle, patient, so loving toward the children. Even children who fear dogs seem to be just fine with her. My nieces adore her and consider her part of their family.

I've attached two recent photos and a QuickTime file to watch a local commercial that she was cast in. She's also appeared in several of the concerts and music-related shows I produce as well as a mobile TV series and web-based shows.

Thank you so much! I am grateful to you and your staff for what you do!
