Register to Volunteer
Many thanks to over 5,400 JA corporate and community volunteers who played a vital role in supporting the delivery of JA programs and experiences to 64,400 New York City and Long Island students during the 2011-2012 school year! We're grateful for your energy, passion and resources and the students of NYC and Long Island are more prepared to take control of their academic and economic futures than they were a year ago. But there is still much work to be done; more students in need and not enough resources to benefit them all.
JA classes are already being set up for 2012-2013. Stand up for inspiration. Choose to volunteer for achievement. Go back to school with Junior Achievement this fall.

New Monthly Giving Option
Junior Achievement of New York is pleased to offer a new monthly giving option to our friends and supporters - the JA Boosters' Club. Monthly giving provides a steady and cost-effective source of income to provide Junior Achievement's vital financial literacy, entrepreneurship, college and work-readiness programs to high need NYC and Long Island schools.
And because your monthly donation is processed automatically, you help us reduce our costs-which allows us to fund more programs and help more children. As a JA Booster Club monthly donor, you will be choosing to make a credit card, PayPal, or check donation every month. If you use a credit card or PayPal, after you make your initial donation, future donations will be charged every month. For example, if you choose to make a monthly donation of $10 today, your next donation of $10 will be automatically charged to your account in exactly one month to the day, and each subsequent month thereafter.
Commit to Monthly Giving. Become a JA Booster Club member! |

Spotlight on Young Achievers
Every year at this time, we introduce exceptional young men and women whose accomplishments we will be celebrated at our fall Awards Dinner. We're excited to introduce to you our 2012 Student of the Year Honoree and several other young people who have been selected from the student of the year applicant pool to represent Junior Achievement of New York at various high profile events and visibility opportunities over the course of the 2012-13 school year.

Introducing Josuel Plasencia:
2012 Student of the Year Honoree
For Josuel Plasencia, a 12th Grade student at the Academy of Finance and Enterprise, Long Island City, this year promises to be a pivotal year in his life - a year, which if all goes to plan - will create the kind of opportunities, access and possibilities unimagined by past generations of his family.
Without a doubt, Josuel is a driven and focused young man. His drive and determination to rise above low expectations has distinguished him as this year's Student of the Year Honoree. He believes that Junior Achievement has played an important role in helping him to grow, refocus, and believe in his ability to achieve in school and in life. "There have been so many influential people in my life, but the problem is that nearly all of them were not good influences. Then along came Junior Achievement. It could sound cliché, but here I am - a kid from Queens, from a low income family who becomes part of an organization that opens my eyes to so many things, but most importantly to the fact that things are possible if I have the courage to try. And today I'm trying to doing more than what is just possible; according to some of those old influences, I am trying to do the impossible."
Josuel hopes one day to become a businessman and an activist. He doesn't believe the two are mutually exclusive. "Through Junior Achievement, I see business people who are active in the community; investing their time and resources to make the world better for young people like me. I would love an opportunity to expand awareness of what Junior Achievement is and what it does. Perhaps one day I too will be a successful businessman sharing my experiences and advice with a class. And maybe one day another young person like me will be inspired to tell the world what Junior Achievement has meant to them."

2012 Student Ambassadors
We're excited to have Jackson Finio, Chang Sun and Lima Hossain represent us this year as student ambassadors and we look forward to bringing more news to you about their accomplishments and successes over the coming year.
Jackson Finio of the Bronx High School of Science will be high school senior this fall. Jackson has participated in the JA New York Business Plan Competition for the last two years - and he and his teammates have twice received second place prizes in the competition. Undeterred by missing out on the 1st place award, Jackson is hoping that the third time will be the charm during his final year in high school. But what made Jackson stand out as a student of the year applicant was his passion for business education. "I hope I can help continue to encourage others to reach farther and discover their own spark as well. I believe passionately in Junior Achievement's mission, and I will dedicate myself to its success."
Chang Sun is a 12th grade student at the High School for Dual Language and Asian Studies. Chang is highly recommended by her teacher who describes her as a highly motivated, confident and outgoing student with a passion for economics and personal finance. Chang is excited about representing Junior Achievement of New York as a student ambassador: "Accepting challenges is the foundation of my life experiences and something I do with confidence. Emigrating from China two years ago, I have faced problems such as language barriers, but still maintain my enthusiasm and seriousness about learning and experiencing new things through the opportunities I am given."
Lima Hossain of the Brooklyn Academy of Science and the Environment has participated in the JA New York High School Heroes program, the JA Job Shadow program and the JA New York Youth Leadership Conference programs. She credits Junior Achievement with inspiring her to take a deeper interest in the field of business. As a student ambassador, she looks forward to this year's experiences providing her with a gateway of opportunity "...to encourage others and share the influence of Junior Achievement."

Junior Achievement
In The Public Eye
We have an exciting fall shaping up. Junior Achievement of New York has been invited to help Microsoft Corporation open its first Long Island, NY Microsoft Store on Friday, September 28th at Walt Whitman Shops in Huntington Station. Long Island middle and high school students will participate in the grand opening activities, including a JA Job Shadow experience and a special performance concert sponsored by Microsoft, featuring an as yet unknown popular artist.
This opportunity has been cultivated through Junior Achievement USA's national partnership with Microsoft Corporation. Through this partnership, Junior Achievement is pleased to present the Microsoft Unlimited Potential (UP) technology curriculum. The UP curriculum was developed by Microsoft to provide young people from around the world with learning opportunities designed to make them more technologically competitive in today's global society. The curriculum aims to help young people gain critical 21st century work readiness skills needed for today's "knowledge economy."
