Young Adult Literature Community Book Group
with facilitator Nancy Litvak
Wednesday, February 9th at 7:00 pm

Bookshop Santa Cruz is excited to announce the launch of our new Community Book Group series, focusing on young adult literature.

Are you a parent or grandparent who is curious about why the teen in your life is drawn to reading one title over another? Do you want to understand more about what's so interesting about the book your child won't stop talking about? Are you yourself a fan and reader of young adult literature? Then we invite you to take part in our monthly reading group dedicated to young adult literature (literature broadly aimed at readers who are 12 and older).

This group will be facilitated by Nancy Litvak (newly retired librarian from Harbor High School) and meet on the second Wednesday of every month. The first reading selection for the group is Suzanne Collins' The Hunger Games--a book that delivers equal parts suspense and philosophy, adventure and romance. A stunning novel set in a future, there is an unsettling parallel to the present.

Please join us on February 9th for the first meeting of our Young Adult Community Book Group. (There will be snacks and tea!)

The Hunger Games is discounted at 10% off its cover price through February 9th.

Community Book Group with Tatjana Soli
Thursday, February 24th at 7:00 pm

Bookshop Santa Cruz's next Community Book Group selection is one of our favorite novels of last year: The Lotus Eaters by Tatjana Soli. We invite you to join us for a facilitated discussion of this sweeping (and did we say amazing) debut novel about an American female combat photographer in the Vietnam War. The New York Times called The Lotus Eaters, "...Splendid...Helen's [the main character] restlessness and grappling, her realization that 'a woman sees war differently,' provide a new and fascinating perspective on Vietnam. Vivid battle scenes, sensual romantic entanglements and elegant writing add to the pleasures of The Lotus Eaters."

We invite you to read The Lotus Eaters, then to join us on February 24th for a community discussion of the book facilitated by Julie Minnis. It will be followed by a dialogue with author Tatjana Soli herself.

The Lotus Eaters is discounted 10% off its cover price through February 24th.

We hope you'll be a part of our next community book group; this is one you won't want to miss!

Read it before you see it:

The big top meets the big screen when Reese Witherspoon, Robert Pattinson, Christoph Waltz, and Hal Holbrook bring to life Algonquin's bestseller Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen on April 22nd. It's a great pick for a book group, made even better by the possibility of a second discussion once you've all seen the movie.

New on our Book Group Wall

Coming soon to our book group wall is a whole series of reading suggestions pairing books you loved with titles we think you'll like just as much. To give you a small taste, here's one such recommendation :

If you liked:

In the Woods by Tana French

We think you'll like:

The Poison Tree by Eric Kelly

If you like your mystery novels with a little psychological meat on them, then you probably already love Tana French. Her debut novel, In the Woods, was an Edgar award winner and an instant favorite for mystery lovers and book groups (and mystery-loving book groups!). Erin Kelly's debut novel, The Poison Tree, has much in common with French's work--it's another deeply atmospheric mystery, set in London in the early 1990s, and its story centers around an infamous crime that was never quite forgotten. And even when you think you've figured out the ending, trust me...you haven't! Fans of Donna Tartt and Sophie Hannah should also check out this exciting new talent.     --Kat
