News from Blue Moon Ranch
Our newsletter is a wee bit late this month, but summer activity at the ranch peaks in June and July! Crias being born, holiday celebrations and all those fleeces that demanded our attention coupled with a nice visit from family trumps newsletter deadlines. We hope you are enjoying an active happy summer too.

 A Great Shearing Day!

A superb team of helpers and a break in the rainy June weather made 2009 shearing day a complete success. Many of the fleeces are now being spun into yarn which will be available for sale in September at our Open Barn days on Sept 26-27.
Some raw fleece for our spinning and felting friends is also available on our Etsy store!

 Alpaca Cam updates

Regular alpaca cam watchers know that the more you watch, the more likely it is you will see something interesting.   However, I received a letter from a viewer last week who on the first time she looked in on the alpaca cam got to see a birth!  Sophia had Eve right in front of the camera and a first time viewer in California got to see it as well!
Also, for our friends who use Macs .... We have  a temporary fix! We are streaming the video through Ustream and you will find the link right on the barn cam page where it says Mac users try this. In 2010 the alpaca cam page on our web site will also allow viewing for Macs, but for now this will let you see some of what's going on at the ranch.
The photo above is a cam view shot of the alpacas when they were mowing the back yard.
7 tips for surving the recession with your alpaca business  by Katy Spears
1. Remember that you are not alone. People with money in the stock market, real estate, cattle, horses, and pretty much any business you can think of have lost a significant portion of their investment (at least on paper).
2. If you don't sell your alpacas at today's current low prices, you don't lose money. Economic advisors have called alpacas a "hold" investment for now.
3. Don't let panic selling cause you to drop your alpaca prices to a place where you're not comfortable selling.
4. Keep in mind that your pregnant alpacas are out in the field growing your investment now. They are working for you. Focus on their care.
5. Your Investment almost doubles with each female cria. This knowledge should leave you feeling good about the money you have invested. (Stock holders do not have this assurance.)
6. If you don't already use the alpacas' fleece to bring in money - this is the time to do it. Let the alpacas do their part to earn their keep.
7. Remember why you got into the alpaca business to begin with. For the majority of people in the alpaca business, money was not the number one reason they invested in alpacas. The animals and the lifestyle they allow are more important to most of us.

Tip of the month:  Hose off bellies of your alpacas with a garden hose - even the most timid will approach you to get cooled off. If you haven't already done so this is a great time to teach them their names!
