Some Things I've learned
It's been 10 years since we began sharing our lives with alpacas. So that's a lot of time to learn some good stuff! (especially for someone who grew up in the city of Chicago) This list is a work in progress, but I thought I'd share it with you now even though it will continue to grow. Most of these lessons I learned the hard way. Like when the eggs cracked in my pocket after lifting a bale of hay, I learned to empty my pockets first! ....read on, enjoy.... and since I am still learning, come back next month to see what else I figured out!
*Empty the chicken eggs from your pockets as soon as you gather them
*Difficult births usually happen on Sundays or long holiday weekends
*Alpacas are way smarter than they let you know
*Make hay bale steps in the hay barn as you take bales down
*Even the very best vets make mistakes
*Being outside with animals all day is the best cure for whatever ails you
*People attracted to alpacas are some of the best people in the world
*Most things will work themselves out if you can have the patience to let that happen
*The most important choice you make every morning is the attitude you choose to have that day
*Death is part of life for the animals who live here - and to die of old age is a blessing
*An alpaca mom giving birth is exciting for the whole herd
*The perfect fence would be a series of gates
*If you see a few animals chewing cud, chances are the rest are fine too
*If you see a few animals staring at something, better hurry and see what it is!
*New crias get to act however they want for a few days, by one week old, they'll get spit at for misbehaving
*Moms and daughters often stay friends for many years
*Boys like watching the girls, visiting the girls and watching the girls again
*Never ever ever borrow Ed's tools unless you plan to put them back immediately
*Spinning alpaca fiber is a wonderful and relaxing pastime
*If you leave your camera in the house, you will miss some amazing shots
*Once you really love alpacas, you can never have enough
