A New
Year

2009 will present challenges as well as opportunities for all of us.  Resolutions?  It seem to me they get left by the way side pretty quickly.  Setting goals might be better... and be sure to write down what you want to accomplish!  Do you want to learn to spin?  Or maybe this is the year to start your own alpaca herd.  Write it down, and make it happen.  Yes you can.

Alpacas generally do quite well in cold weather but there are a few things we can do to help them enjoy the cold winter months.  One of the favorite winter treats the Blue Moon herd enjoys is a bucket of  warm "tea".  Alpaca Tea is simply warm water and when they see the steam coming from a bucket, they line up to get a drink.  I have found that the easiest and fastest way to heat water is an electric tea kettle (I got mine at Costco) Two or three boiling kettles in a 5 gallon bucket of fresh cold water makes a nice warm tea for the herd.  Even the boys have a tea kettle in their barn.  You can add electrolytes (a scoop of Gatorade works fine) if your alpacas need an extra boost because of extreme cold or stress.
Featured Alpaca
This month we are featuring a young male for sale.  Columbine Ranch Better Wear Shades  ARI # 30366381  was born in June of 2006,  and he should be ready to breed this spring. He actually thought he was ready when he showed up here at 6 months old!  His pedigree includes Royal Fawn, Bueno, Leon and Snowmass Royal Angel.  The photo below was taken after shearing last year of a sample of his neck fleece!  So why would we sell this little guy?  Probably because we haven't had many females born over the past 2 years and when you are in business, ya gotta sell some!   We will offer him at $6000 and retain 3 breedings at this price. You won't see him for sale on the web site since I am testing the effectiveness of our newsletters for marketing in 2009.    And maybe because I secretly wish he could stay in my herd? :)
 Alpaca  Project Gallery
I have started a page on the Blue Moon Ranch website to feature all of the wonderful projects made from the fiber that our herd generates each year.  Come on - don't be shy  - send me a photo of what you have made.  Let me know if you want your name published as well.  You can be anonymous if you like, but do send me a photo of your project!   The hat is this photo was made by me, (a very novice knitter) using Cecily and Kukinda's yarn together.   To see the gallery page click here, and then send me a photo of your project!  More yarn can be purchased here.

2009 Classes

At Blue Moon Ranch, we offer monthly herd management classes, usually on the last Saturday of the month. We try to cover topics of interest to new alpaca owners. Some of the year has been scheduled and you can see that here. There is no charge for these classes for Blue Moon Ranch customers.  All I ask is that you send an email the Friday before the class to let me know you are coming.
Topics scheduled for 2009 include : giving simple injections to alpacas, trimming toenails without stress, preparing a fleece for a show, the importance of observing your herd, and how to be prepared for a birthing season.  If there is a topic you would like to see covered, please let me know by sending an email.  You are welcome to take these classes as many times as you like, even after you have your alpacas at your own farm.  We usually have a pretty good time, and we never have quizzes!
