Halloween is only a few weeks away and the coupons, deals and discounts offered for decorations, costumes, snacks and of course, candy are scary good! I hope you will take the time this year to plan your spending and reap these available savings. The planning process is as simple as taking time to think about what really matters to you and your family and then spending your money accordingly. If costumes are your passion, then this is where you might look for more savings but also spend more to get something you will really enjoy. If cooking is something you really enjoy, then going into the next few months figure out how this may impact your spending and plan to buy the extra things you enjoy at the grocery store. The important thing to be aware of your spending patterns and spot the changes that occur as a result of all the pressure to buy, buy, buy that ramps up this time of year.

Baking cookies is one of my favorite things to do this time of year. Sometimes hauling out all the ingriedients is too time consuming during the week so for a quick and easy afterschool snack, try making these cookies with your kids or grandkids!

More CASH Spending Insights
Are you more in touch with cash or the illusion of cash?
Last month, I shared two things that I learned in after spending cash only for a week. The first had to do with actually feeling my consumption rate and the other had to do with working out what fits within cash limits and how cooperation happens. However the overriding most important thing I learned was how easy it is to drift towards living in the illusion of cash rather than actual cash. What I mean by these terms is described below:
Illusion of Cash
The definition of illusion is something that deceives by producing a false or misleading impression of reality. With a credit or debit card there is room for extending your spending power to reach beyond your limits. This creates an illusion of more cash than you actually have at any given time. Now, I realize that many consumers (including myself) these days like the convenience and perks that go along with swiping a card (debit card included). However, this only works in your favor if you pay off the entire amount on a credit card bill at the end of the month or with a debit card spend within the limits of your account. Remember, both these cards give you instant access to more cash in the form of a short term loan that extends your spending power past your limit temporarily. How well you manage this dynamic determines whether this works for you or against you.
Actual CashAll the slang names I could think of for this are dough, green, coin, dead presidents, clams, moolah, bread...just to name a few. When you look at the balances of your accounts (i.e. savings, checking) and what is in your wallet, piggy bank, coin collection, tray in the car and any other stash, then this is actual cash. One time we sold one of our car's on Craig's List and the buyer paid me in cash! It was the most actual cash I have ever held in my hands!
As a wife, mother of three kids and business owner I have to admit, it is exhausting to monitor money closely and this is an ongoing battle and likely the case for most consumers. In this battle what I have figured out is when money (actual cash) is monitored regularly, this leads to awareness. When it is not monitored, then this is when the illusion of money creeps in which leads to a lack of awareness. In the end, the mental, physical and relational stress of monitoring money before it is spent is much easier to manage than the stress of trying to figure out how to cover everything after money is already spent.
As the holidays approach and the biggest season of spending is before us, consider doing what I am doing with money and that is taking time to gain awareness, plan ahead and ultimately lower stress and increase the enjoyment of all that comes with this special time of the year. |

Couponizer of the Month
Kim & Walt Danburt Melbourne, FL
Hello Coupon-lovers! I've been involved in couponing (on and off) since the 80's. In fact, I still have my original copy of Cashing in at the Checkout by Susan Samtur. I have numerous couponing DVD's. I, loyally, get two newspapers every Sunday so that I can have a cache of coupons. What I haven't had going for me was a viable coupon organizing system, haven't had until now, that is. My early coupon organizing efforts were culminated in an index card/small brief-case type container. In theory, it seemed like a good idea, and I was making it work (sort of) until the unthinkable happened, and in an odd calamity of errors , the entire coupon file, turned over and it was a complete disaster.
Most recently, I decided to try a clip-less system, whereby entire coupon flyers, organized per each month by date. Clip-less system was a Use-less system for me. There was this do not touch sort of attitude with this system, so I didn't touch them, save to put them in the file. The tempting aspect of this system was that there is an online (free) database of the coupon inserts, so one was to search database for specific items. I spend scads of time at my computer, so I thought this might be a new approach for me to an age old problem---organizing my coupons for use. However, volumes of inserts went by without my touching them and soon, I wasn't using any of my coupons, which were, nicely organized in the file folders for searching through the database.
I had been eyeing another system online for nearly a year. It was called the Couponizer. I kept going back to the site and was helpless to understand how a system, so simple, could accomplish for me, what a coupon attach, a computer data base, a hanging file folder, four loose-leaf filled with baseball card pockets (yeah used that one too) were unable to do for me. But, one day, my husband (God bless him) ordered it for me. That was a week ago. Last week I went through my tome of (mostly expired but neatly organized by date) coupon inserts and clipped what I could salvage. Saturday, my husband and I used the Coupon Stacker with the Couponizer and put away our coupons. Filling the Couponizer was accomplished with such ease, I wondered if we were really finished. On the strength of the Coupon stacker, I devised a sub-category coupon stacker for coupons that I use only at Drugstores. This leads me to my story about actually using the Couponizer to save money. It's a small story , about a very little amount of money.
On Saturday, after sorting our coupons into the Couponizer and my Couponizer-inspired drugstore-coupon organizer, my husband and I were driving home. I had been meaning to pick-up dishwashing liquid for nearly a week and it had slipped my mind each time. So when the CVS sign we were passing flashed Dawn dishwashing liquid 96 cents, we pulled in. Then I remembered I had 1 (yes ONE) Dawn coupon in my organizer. My husband (who had helped in the coupon organizing) remembered it too. One little coupon for 50 cents. So we culled through the Household cleaning segment and found the one coupon. As it happens, when I went into CVS, I scanned my ECB card and learned that I had two Extra-Care Bucks as well. So we ended up getting three bottles of Dawn dishwashing liquid, for 44 cents. I was tickled. Walt (my husband) was thrilled!
Just today, we made another CVS run and came home with $90 worth of products for $60. So for us, the Couponizer system does, indeed work. My next purchases from the Couponizer site will be Couponizers for gifts for family and friends who are into or want to try couponing. Thank you for your good works.

Couponizer Cook
Chicken Pot Pie
Fall comfort food! This dish is easy to prepare and something the whole family will enjoy. Be sure to cover edges with tin foil when baking so they do not get too brown. Ingredients: 1 pound skinless, boneless chicken breast halves - cubed 1 cup sliced carrots 1 cup frozen green peas 1/2 cup sliced celery 1/3 cup butter 1/3 cup chopped onion 1/3 cup all-purpose flour 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon black pepper 1/4 teaspoon celery seed 1 3/4 cups chicken broth 2/3 cup milk 2 (9 inch) unbaked pie crusts
Directions:
Preheat oven to 425 degrees F (220 degrees C.)
In a saucepan, combine chicken, carrots, peas, and celery. Add water to cover and boil for 15 minutes. Remove from heat, drain and set aside.
In the saucepan over medium heat, cook onions in butter until soft and translucent. Stir in flour, salt, pepper, and celery seed. Slowly stir in chicken broth and milk. Simmer over medium-low heat until thick. Remove from heat and set aside.
Place the chicken mixture in bottom pie crust. Pour hot liquid mixture over. Cover with top crust, seal edges, and cut away excess dough. Make several small slits in the top to allow steam to escape.
Bake in the preheated oven for 30 to 35 minutes, or until pastry is golden brown and filling is bubbly. Cool for 10 minutes before serving. Coupons to use: butter, flour, seasonings, broth, pie crusts & buy chicken on sale!! |
