back to school
2010-11 School year is here!

Lots of kids are making their way back in the classroom this month, my kids included.  They were so excited to get on the bus by the time the big first day of school arrived.

I love this time of year but at the same time, our weekly schedules and routines are easily over programmed when events, lessons, practices, parties and travel are not well communicated and coordinated with all family members.   If it were up to my kids, they would be involved every sport, club or group available and be out doing something every night!   With 3 kids, this would send me over the edge!  We have a one sport per season rule and one night of nothing on the schedule in our family and even with this, I find myself on the go quite a bit!  So, as I plan with my calendar and Couponizer, meals/groceries, carpools and babysitters, I am able to figure out when and how I need support.  This helps me to to keep everything going...weekends included!

I encourage everyone to start off the school year by sharpening your planning skills and equipping yourself with the tools needed to be well organized with the family schedule and budget!  Once you have a solid understanding of your family's schedule, then spending money along the way is not as stressful.  See my Tip this month for more one this.

TIP
How to Use Cell Phone Coupons Wisely.
Recognize that digital coupons are easy to access and sometimes hard to resist!

Digital coupons are really easy to find and use!  These types of coupons are available through cell phone applications and eliminate all paperwork!  Some digital coupons use the GPS device on your cell phone to find special offers close to your location and the volume of offers available is growing as retailers embrace this new technology.

So, as you venture into the world of digital coupons, it is important to strengthen your resolve to use them wisely.  An impulse buy can be triggered by a digital coupon much more easily than a paper coupon.

Below is a scenario in which digital coupons are used, one is wiser than then other:

EATING OUT
Scenario #1:  You are just plain hungry and have groceries at home to make dinner. You have had a long day and while waiting for the kids to finish practice you check your cell phone and see a a dine in Family Special for under $20 at a local pizza place called Pizzeria Azzurri.  Just like that you are being seated at a table and spend more money than planned to feed the family.

Scenario #2:  You decide to go out to eat with your family one night this week.  This night rolls around and The Olive Garden is a family favorite but you check your cell phone first for deals before you make a decision.  You discover a dine in Family Special for under $20 at a local pizza place called Pizzeria Azzurri.  You change your mind to grab the savings.

So which one was the wiser way to a digital coupon?  You guessed it - Scenario #2!  In that situation, the dinner out was planned and the coupon helped save money, not the other way around.

Impulse buying isn't bad if it happens occasionally and you are aware of it. I love being spontaneous and sometimes as Moms we do need a break!  But, what I have learned is coupons have a way of testing my plan for how and when I will spend money and the weaker the plan, the more money I spend.   The good news is the reverse is true too!  The stronger the plan, the less money I spend!

I've been a couponaholic for the past few years but always lacked a good system that I found managable... until I purchased The Couponizer.  I love it!  Finally I have a system that I think works for the majority of savvy coupon shoppers.  Recently I attended a "coupon class" with some friends who heard about my savings stories.  The class leader brought along binders she had assembled that included similar items to The Couponizer.  However, her version was huge and ugly compared to mine.  After the class I quietly pulled out my Couponizer to show someone the Coup Stacker.  Quickly a swarm of women, including the teacher, gathered to take a look at how quick and easy I could sort a stack of coupons that would have been unmanagable earlier.  Everyone was really impressed by the simple, easy and compact design.  It proves once again that I bought the best system.  Now that I am more organized I am saving even more at the stores.

Jennifer - I would have loved to have seen the swarm of women!  Thank you for sharing with others your experience with your Couponizer.  Keep up the great savings!  -Amy

Greek Style Pita Sandwiches
Recipe by Our Best Bites

The combination of flavors here are fresh and zesty.  Greek style yogurt is thicker than regular brand and makes a wonderful tangy sauce!  Also, we use our garden cucumbers and tomatoes for extra fresh flavor.

12 oz boneless pork loin chops, or boneless skinless chicken
1 Tablespoon olive oil
2 teaspoons minced garlic
1 1/2 Tablespoons fresh lemon juice
2  teaspoons minced fresh oregano
1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
1/4 tsp black pepper
1/4 C diced tomato
1/4 C diced cucumber
2 Tablespoons diced red onion
6 Tablespoons plain Greek Style Yogurt
1/2 teaspoon lemon zest
1/2 Tablespoon fresh minced parsley
1/4 teaspoon kosher salt
4 Lettuce leaves
4 pita bread halves
2-3 Tbs crumbled Feta cheese

Cut pork (or Chicken) into 1/4" slices.  Combine pork (or chicken), olive oil, garlic, lemon juice, oregano, 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt and 1/4 teaspoon pepper in a shallow dish and set aside to marinate.  This can be done 1-3 hours ahead of time for maximum flavor.

Combine Greek yogurt, lemon zest, parsley and 1/4 teaspoon salt and set in fridge to chill.  Heat a medium skillet to medium high heat and add pork (or chicken) mixture to pan and cook for 3-4 minutes, stirring frequently, until pork is cooked through and then remove from heat.

Combine tomato, cucumber, and red onion.  To assemble, place one lettuce leaf in each pita.  Divide pork mixture between pitas, add cucumber and tomato mixture and then top with yogurt sauce and a sprinkle of feta.
Coupons to use: olive oil, salt, pepper, yogurt, pita bread, feta cheese
