TIP
Word History - COUPON
Just in case you were wondering where the word coupon came from, I did a little research and found out a few things. First, this word developed from the Latin word colpus which is derived from colaphus meaning "a blow with the fist." Then colaphus became the word colp or in modern French, the word coup. The definition of coup is a highly successful, unexpected stroke, act, or move; a clever action or accomplishment. Coup is used in a familiar phrase coup d'état and the derivative couper "to divide with a blow or stroke, to cut" which then yielded our favorite word ---- Coupon.
Coupon then came to refer to "a portion that is cut off" and is first recorded in English in 1822. The word coupon came to apply to forms or detachable tickets that could be exchanged for various benefits. Back then this referred to a certificate that was detachable from a principle certificate which could be exchanged for interest or dividend payments by the holder of the principal certificate.
However, coupons as we know them today are issued by manufacturers of consumer packaged goods or by retailers and are used as sales promotions. Billions are widely distributed through the mail, magazines, newspapers, Internet, and mobile devices. So, for those of us who need or want to cut costs, with a stroke over the scanner at checkout, coupons are very effective in delivering a blow to the bill which is a very clever accomplishment!

TOOL
Printable Coupons
Overcoming printing problems
As mentioned above in the history lesson of the word coupon, today you have the luxury of Internet printable coupons. Coupons are the ultimate money saving tools! I happen to like the printable method of delivery since you only get the coupons you select and save paper and ink.
On our website, we offer on our COUPONS page printable coupons from 3 of the largest sources. You may also access these coupons in the PRINT COUPONS NOW section of this newsletter every month. Each source many have a few duplicate offers but for the most part you will find different offers which gives you a variety to choose from and achieve remarkable savings!
From time to time I receive an e-mail or phone call from someone who cannot print coupons. Whenever I walk people through any one of the steps below, it always solves the problem. So, below are the 3 things to check if you are having trouble printing coupons:
Is your printer ready? There may be a loose cable or an error message such as low ink or out of paper that is preventing you from printing. Also, make sure you have a default printer set up.
Is your operating system or browser is compatible? For the most part, coupon printing is currently supported on Windows 98, NT4, 2000, ME, and XP when used with Internet Explorer 5+, Netscape 7+, FireFox 1.0+ and most MSN and AOL browsers. If needed, go to the coupon source webpage to determine what operating systems are compatible with printing coupons from the source.
Did you install the Coupon Print Driver? If you have not gone through these steps then the coupon source cannot locate the device for printing. Instructions to download and install the print driver from each coupon source will display the first time you initiate the action to print off the coupon source. you only need to do this once or if for some reason the print driver has been erased and then you will be prompted to reinstall.
Take time every week to check the new coupons and print your savings. Also, as a subscriber, we will send you a reminder e-mail when the coupons have been restocked. Remember each coupon has a limited number of prints and when this is reached, the offer is taken down. So print when you see an offer that matches your needs, load up your Couponizer and go get your savings. |
Couponizer of the Month
Jeanie Constable
Littlerock, CA
My story is about helping someone else by showing them my Couponizer! I was shopping in Winco when a woman approached me and exclaimed, "What is that? It looks great, all my coupons are in the car!" I took my Couponizer out of the shopping cart and went through it for her page by page, explaining it all as I went. She loved it, so I promptly gave her the website address so she could go online and buy one. I didn't get her name but I hope she bought one as I know it has helped me get back into using coupons, making it very easy and keeping everything well organized. Thanks again!!
