TIP
Understanding a Coupon UPC Demystifying this important and overlooked coupon component
Did you know that the first UPC marked item ever scanned at a retail checkout (Marsh's supermarket in Troy, Ohio) was at 8:01 a.m. on June 26, 1974, and was a 10-pack of Wrigley's Juicy Fruit chewing gum? Hmmm...I wonder if this shopper had a coupon. Probably not since the use of coupon barcodes followed this breakthrough in the retail checkout process.
Universal Product Code (UPC) is a barcode symbology that is widely used in Canada and the United States for tracking product items in stores. So when a manufacturer issues a coupon, It comes down to a matching game. A portion of the code on the product UPC has to match a portion of the coupon UPC code on all scanned items. If this does not occur, then the coupon savings cannot be determined or credited.
There are five sections and a total of 12 numbers on most all UPC barcodes. You may see a second UPC barcode on a coupon called an extended code, but for now I will focus on the first. Each section of the UPC number will help match coupons to products and determine the value of the coupon. The following is a description of the 5 sections of a basic coupon code as displayed in the diagram above:
1) Number System Character (NSC) All coupons should begin with the NSC or Number System Character of 5.
2) Manufacturers Number
This is a five digit (12345 above) that identifies the manufacturer and should match the manufacturer number on the product.
3) Family Code
This next set of three numbers (678 above) is used to verify that the shopper has purchased the product which applies to the coupon. A manufacturer assigns family codes to each of their products.
4) Value Code
The next two numbers which follow the family code is called the value code and determines the value of the coupon. The value of the coupon in the diagram above is 90 cents.
5) Check Digit
The final number is called a check digit. All UPC numbers contain a check digit which is automatically calculated based on the eleven preceding numbers on the UPC symbol.
Understanding this information may help you at checkout if there is ever a dispute about the value of a coupon or whether it applies. Sometimes a coupon will feature a picture of a product but the family code will include other products as well. If a cashier only looks at the picture, then they may try to deny you the use of a legitimate coupon.

Couponizer of the Month
I've had my new tote for 7 days & it's already paid for itself! YEAH!! You have to love this bag more every day with the time and money it saves. I was in need of a new Couponizer (best coupon system ever) & you had a 'deal' price of $10.00 with the purchase of a very cool looking tote. To justify the cost, I promised myself I'd start using it immediately to track extra savings. Placed my order on a Tuesday & had it early Thursday...super fast FREE shipping! All coupons, sales inserts, coupon catalogs, reward dollars/certificates, etc. PLUS my water & healthy snack fit into the bag! No more 'forgotten' coupons or 'extra trips' to the store. Now the savings...$9.95 on the new Couponizer PLUS free shipping $5.75. Next stop was for printer ink. No worries, just stopped on my way home because I had sales flier & rewards dollars with me, savings $21.40. Usually would have to go home for this purchase (butcher shop/deli), because the coupon was on the back of my neighborhood newsletter, savings $5.35. Fast stop at grocery store, savings $7.93. Emergency replacement of hardware, savings $19.26. Grand total savings of $69.64 in 7 days!! YEAH Couponizer Tote! Thanks for helping me save money, time, and look fashionable too!
Blessings,

Couponizer Cook
Grilled Leg of Lamb with Rosemary, Garlic, and Mustard
This recipe is from Epicurious.com and is simply wonderful. Leg of lamb prices over the Easter holiday were only $3.99/lb, so I made this for Easter dinner and it was a winner! Great for any Spring/summer cookout!
Note: I bought a 6lb leg of lamb and had the butcher take the bone out and cut the leg in half to make 2 roasts. I froze one and cooked the other and cut this recipe in half. I also only marinated for about an hour and it was fine, but overnight would be best.
Ingredients:
1 well-trimmed 6-pound boneless leg of lamb, butterflied to even 2-inch thickness
8 garlic cloves, peeled, divided
1/2 cup whole grain Dijon mustard
1/2 cup extra-virgin olive oil
1/4 cup dry white wine
2 tablespoons finely chopped fresh rosemary
2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
Nonstick vegetable oil spray
Fresh rosemary sprigs and fresh Italian parsley sprigs
Directions: Open lamb like book on work surface. Using tip of small knife, make 1/2-inch-deep slits all over lamb. Thinly slice 4 garlic cloves. Insert garlic slices into slits in lamb. Combine remaining 4 garlic cloves, mustard, olive oil, white wine, rosemary, and lemon juice in processor. Blend until coarse puree forms. Spread underside of lamb with half of puree. Place lamb, seasoned side down, in 15 x 10 x 2-inch glass baking dish. Spread remaining puree over top of lamb. Cover lamb with plastic wrap and chill overnight.
Let lamb stand at room temperature 2 hours. Coat grill rack with nonstick spray and prepare barbecue (medium-high heat). Sprinkle lamb generously with salt and pepper on both sides. Grill lamb to desired doneness, about 17 minutes per side for medium-rare. Transfer lamb to cutting board; let rest 10 to 20 minutes.
Thinly slice lamb against grain. Overlap slices on platter. Sprinkle with salt and pepper. Garnish with fresh herb sprigs. Use coupons for: mustard, olive oil
