February 2010

amy soft edgeFebruary Greetings!

I hope everyone is enjoying this winter weather!  Aside from folks in southern Florida and parts of the Southwest, it seems the whole country is in a very cold weather pattern!  Also, The Winter Olympic Games are very exciting to watch as the Americans are racking up the metals!  GO USA!!

While we primarily focus on coupon savings, occasionally when I find relevant and useful information about saving money in other areas, I pass it along to you!

Well, last year in an attempt to save money on our heating and air conditioning bill and take advantage of a federal energy tax credit, we installed a radiant barrier otherwise known as reflective insulation in our attic.  This winter of all winters would have been the opportunity to see the savings!  Guess what...we have seen no change in our enery bill.  What a disappointment and aside from the $1,500 tax credit, what a waste of money.  However there are many other energy efficient products that are eligible for tax credits and are shared in our TIP this month.  So, while you are filing your taxes, take a look and see if you qualify for a federal tax credit.  To save money on heating and air conditioning, the best way to do this is to use them in moderation and dress accordingly!

2010 Coupon Schedule Sources

energyTax Credits for Energy Efficient Products

As you file your taxes this year, take a look at the tax credits available for energy efficient products.  This is one area you may uncover some unexpected savings!

Listed on the Department of Energy website, you will find products that are eligible for tax credits at 30% of the cost, up to a total credit of $1,500; they must be "placed in service" from January 1, 2009 through December 31, 2010.

TOOL
redlaserRedLaser
If you have ventured into the world of phone apps, then check this one out!

RedLaser is a barcode scanning app that allows you to scan a barcode from any product using your iPhone.  Once scanned, a list of available sources for the product pops up along with the price.  For example, I scanned Nature Valley Peanut Butter Granola Bars from my pantry to see what would happen.  Before scanning the product, the app asked to use my current location to find prices.  Once the product scan was complete, (which was as easy as holding my phone over the barcode) then a list of stores and websites appeared with prices next to each location.  Also listed was the Nutrition Facts!  It saves this information until you delete it and you may e-mail to others or to yourself.

While I have just started playing around with this app, I can see it being useful for hard to find items and scanning the items you buy all the time so you are able to easily compare prices.  What I have yet to discover is how store sales will be integrated and if it will eventually match available coupons.  I look forward to further testing this tool along with other technical tools available for saving money in a quest to find things that work!

I went out on medical disability in July 2008 and found myself living on a budget that was very different from my "old life".  I was always resourceful as a kid growing up with limited money in a one parent family and had paper routes, baby sat, etc.  Those options were out so I decided it was time to go back to being serious with coupons, like I was as a young person in the 1980's.  My old coupon book was falling apart and the morning after I had the thought, saw the Couponizer and a clip of a Couponizer party on our local news channel!  No coincidences!  I ordered my own Couponizer that day and have loved it.  The organization of it is brilliant, especially at check out time.  I've also started helping friends out who are having tough times in this economy by passing coupons to them of their most used products.  The true test has been with my significant other or "emergency contact" as we call each other when I've pulled out coupons for meals, etc. and he sees savings of $8 or more with one coupon and now asks "do you have the Couponizer in the car?" before we leave the house!

Thank you Deb for writing to me.  I love it that my system passed the true test!  I wish you continued savings and thank you for helping others during these tough economic times.
