October Greetings!

One of my favorite things about this time of year is baking!  When the oven warmth creates these amazing aromas that permeate the whole house, this really signals that Fall is here!  Pumpkin bread especially does the trick!.  Some other things that my kids look forward to in October are figuring out their Halloween costume, carving pumpkins and trick or treating in the neighborhood.

I am not crazy about the 5 lb bag of candy that is hauled home after trick or treating!  With 3 kids, this is roughly 15 lbs of candy and it lurks as an unnecessary threat to dental health and my fitness goals!  However, I will share that I have figured out that simply allowing my kids to eat as much as they want and then get a big, fat stomach ache is one way they will ignore the candy for a few weeks.  By then, the thrill is gone and it makes it's way to the trash.

I have an idea!  I think I might just be the first house in history that gives out a toothbrush and a tube of toothpaste to each kid who comes knocking.  I could even ask my children's dentist to give me the supplies advertising his practice and skip the cost of candy all together!  But in the end, I hope everyone has fun and stays safe on Halloween.

TIP
trick or treatSaving Money on Halloween Costumes

Two things will determine costume choices - your budget and also how much you are into Halloween.  Let's face it, if YOU are into Halloween, the chances are your kids are too.  So in an effort to maximize your money on costumes, below are a few tips:

SHOP AROUND - If you have or want to spend some money, then shop around.  Set a budget and tell your kids this firm number!  If it is $20, then it is $20!  This will teach them to flexible and creative with their choice.

STORE MATTERS - Right about now, the supplies are starting to get picked over so now is the time to get out there and make your selections.  While in TJ Maxx, I saw the exact same costumes that were in a Halloween pop-up store (the kind that appear overnight and are gone after the holiday is over) for much less!  Also, if you buy from a store chain, you will be covered with a return policy in the event the garment falls apart before the big night.  If you go to the pop-up Halloween store, you are stuck with it.

MADE IN THE TRADE - Now, if you don't have or want to spend money, then consider trading costumes with friends.  If you have friends with children that are roughly the same size or about the same age, then this is a win-win!  This way each costume will feel new to each child and you won't be spending any money.  If you want to add to the costume, then total cost will be much less than if you bought a new one.

WITH LOVE FROM MOMMY - Then there is always the homemade option.  I am not very good at this one since I don't have a sewing machine, but I have seen many a creative costume put together with hot glue and fabric!  So, check out your local fabric store and do the math to see if the time invested plus the money are worth it.  Of course having the memory of doing this is priceless!

Check out websites and catalogs for ideas and let your kids explore options and look at prices at home before shopping.

Amy
I used to go grocery shopping and buy whatever I wanted.  I always had the mindset that it's a necessity, therefore, I can buy whatever it is I'm feeling like I need.

Then a friend gave me the Couponizer and my first thought was,  "I am never going to use this."  But when my husband and I decided it was time to start budgeting, and I wanted to see if maybe I could save some money at the grocery store, then I started looking at some blogs to see how much others were saving with coupons and what I saw blew my mind.  I saw that people were saving more money than they were spending.  I saw a challenge and quickly decided that I was in!  As I was trying to figure out how to organize all these freshly cut coupons, I remembered I had the Couponizer!  I dug it out of the cabinet and started my couponing journey.

Since I started couponing and using my Couponizer, my grocery budget has cut in half!  It really is AMAZING how well this system works for saving me HUNDREDS of dollars a month!  I can hardly believe how much money I have saved and how easy the Couponizer makes my cutting, organizing and storing my coupons! I get so excited that I can hardly stop telling others about it!

These will fill your house with Fall aromas!
A great pairing with a hearty soup.

Ingredients:
·  1/3 cup butter, softened
·  2 garlic cloves, crushed
·  2 teaspoons very finely grated onion
·  3 egg yolks
·  2 teaspoons water
·  1-1/2 cups all-purpose flour
·  1/2 teaspoon baking powder
·  1/4 teaspoon salt
·  1 egg white, very lightly beaten
·  Coarse salt for sprinkling

Directions:
Preheat oven to 400F (205C). Grease several baking sheets with butter. In a medium-size bowl, beat butter until creamy.

Beat in garlic, onion, egg yolks and water. Sift flour, baking powder and salt into bowl; blend in with a spoon then mix with your hand to form a soft dough. Knead lightly on a floured surface until smooth. Roll out to a 14" x 10" rectangle. Trim edges to make straight. Cut in half crosswise. Using a pastry wheel or a knife, cut dough in thin strips, about 7" x 1/4".

One strip at a time, carefully twist strips; place on prepared baking sheets. Brush with beaten egg white and sprinkle lightly with coarse salt. Bake 15 minutes or until lightly browned. Very carefully remove from baking sheets to wire racks; cool.

Use coupons for:  butter, eggs, flour, baking powder, salt

IDEA:  Experiment with replacing the onion, garlic and salt with cinnamon and sugar and then serve with ice cream!
