August 2009
Greetings!

amy soft edgeAugust Greetings!

I hope everyone has had a great summer!  It sure did fly by, however I have to admit, it is great to be back to a structured routine with my family.  School started a few weeks ago and believe it or not my kids get on the bus at 6:45am!  This early schedule is actually a blessing in disguise!

This month I introduce a new way of thinking about spending - Are you clean or not? I would love to hear your thoughts as you read the tip this month.

Spending Clean.
Becoming aware of habits that may work against you!

Since my kids are back to school, I have started going to a workout class called "Boot Camp."  It is a pretty intense hour of cardio exercises combined with weight training.  I mentioned to the instructor I wanted to lose "this" as I pinched my side.  He replied "Are you eating clean?"  I replied, "How do you define clean?"  He said the usual, eat lots of veggies, drink lots of water, do not buy unhealthy snacks filled with sugar and/or bring known unhealthy foods home.  I then replied "Sort of, but not entirely."  He then shared very confidently that results come when you are eating clean and exercising regularly.  Since I was already committed to the class 3 days a week, I have the excercise piece covered, however I felt I might need to help with the eating part.  We then agreed I would track my eating for one week and then analyze the data.

I share that with you because the same is true for spending.  Are you spending clean?  Spending clean is spending within your means.  If income is like the "exercise" side in the illustration above than your "eating" is your spending.  If you buy things you know you cannot afford, stop communicating honestly about your spending and/or make excuses for getting into financial trouble, then you are not spending clean.  Below are a few tips to help you achieve savings results:

- Track your spending - this is why the CoupTracker is in the Couponizer system.  You may not need it all the time, but when you find yourself unable to declare "I am spending clean", then it's time to gather some data.  This will help you make targeted changes.

- Coupons are like vitamins, extra doses of savings!  Yes, you can get by without them, but taking the time to organize and shop for extra savings has a way of motivating and encourgaing clean spending.

- Establish a routine - stocking the household week after week with a routine is like riding a bike!  Once you learn what works, then the flow of keeping things stocked and the household running is set in motion within realistic financial limits.  If you fall off your routine, it is easy to get back on!

Making spending clean your goal and then arm yourself with the tools and knowledge to reach it.

Date of Couponizer Purchase: 2003
Estimated Savings to Date: $8000

I stumbled upon the Couponizer about 6 years ago to help me keep my coupons organized.  I never knew that it would save me so much money and I would become an inspiration to others because of one little book!  I literally cannot live without my Couponizer (now I am on my third one). Everytime I go to the store, I get stopped by people who ask me where I got this little book.  It has inspired me to create a business of my own which helps moms save money (blog and seminars).  I also have become an affiliate of Couponizer and have a link on my blog.  Since I get so many people asking me where to buy this book, I refer them to my blog and sell the books that way.  I love the fact that The Couponizer was created by a mom who saw a need for this type of product.  Great idea....I love it and will use it forever!!!

chicken bakeParmesan Basil Chicken Bake
by Amy Bergin

This is an original recipe of mine!  My family loved it, so it's time to share with you!

INGREDIENTS:
1 can premium chicken breast (12.5 oz), drained
2 TB butter or margarine
2 TB flour
2 cups milk
4 oz. cream cheese
1/4 c. fresh basil chopped
1 c. shaved parmesan cheese
salt
pepper

DIRECTIONS:
Preheat oven to 375 degrees.  Prepare pasta according to direction on box, do not overcook.  Melt butter in medium sized saucepan, then stir in flour and milk to make a rue sauce or white sauce (see demo below if needed).  Add cream cheese and stir unitl melted.  Once the sauce has thickened, then add chicken, basil, 1/2 c. of parmesan cheese and salt and pepper to taste.  Grease a 9"X13" baking dish and place the cooked pasta for the bottom layer.  Then pour the white sauce mixture over it.  Top with remaining parmesan cheese.  Bake for 20 minutes uncovered or until bubbly.

If you have never made a white sauce, then watch this simple demonstration for tips on making it perfect every time!

Serving suggestion: Add a simple fruit salad like what is pictured - strawberries, bananas and blueberries tossed in vanilla yogurt.

Coupons to use:  canned chicken, butter/margarine, flour, cheese
