Better Planning takes the STRESS out of Back to School Shopping

Getting myself, not to mention the kids back to a routine and predictable schedule is one of the things I look forward to most about my kids going back to school.  The routine has a way of reducing stress by making events more predictable and familiar.

I have learned from experience that right about now, mid-July, time seems to mysteriously speed up.  If you are not deliberate in planning for back to school expenditures, you will find yourself in a panic at Target the weekend before school starts just getting whatever is needed at the moment.  I know I have done this and it is not fun and adds stress on several levels.  Below are a few things I do to plan ahead and keep the fun and excitement in this season! I hope these help you to do the same.

Print the School Supply List NOW!
Go to your school website and usually the supply lists are posted by grade along with any other details related to back to school purchases.
Once you have this list in front of you, then you are in a better position to stagger buying items on the list.  At open house, talk to your child's teacher about what is really needed for the first day of school verses the first 2-3 weeks and stock up accordingly.

Print and organize coupons NOW!
If you accumulate points in a store loyalty program, then you may be eligible for extra savings.  Check your accounts and print any available savings you may sitting in your account.  Print online coupons since this time of year many store offer limited time only coupons for school supplies.  Check our printable coupon sources HERE.  Use your Couponizer for coupon storage and shopping!!

Inventory clothing for school NOW!
Summer clothes are acceptable since the weather here is still hot when school starts so I start weeding through clothing now.  My kids grow over the summer so I donate clothing that we no longer can wear and make room for other things.  This helps me gain a sense of what items will still work and/or be handed down and I don't feel overwhelmed to buy all new clothing.  Just one outfit for the first day is fine and my kids know this drill.

Not only does this remove stress associated with shopping but also stress on the checking account!  This is a season of heavy spending and a little planning goes a long way towards getting the school year off to a great start for everyone in the family!

MobiQpons - Deals from the Hip
MobiQPons is free application for shoppers, distributed on iTunes, and coming soon to Android and Blackberry.

I am an iPhone user and have discovered the world of iPhone apps so naturally I am exploring savings in the mobile world.  It really is amazingly easy to find stores, deals and there are lots of apps for creating shopping lists.  However with MobiQpons you actually have the coupon bar code on your iPhone to hand to the cashier to scan!

For example, in my area, there is a coupon at STAPLES for any 2009 calendar for $1, RITE-AID $5 off any $25 purchase, KMART $5 off $50 purchase, OFFICE DEPOT $15 off any $75 purchase.  Right there are locations I will likely go to get back to school items and I will reap extra savings!

Just another great tool to add to your arsenal of weapons when it comes to saving money!!

If you are an iPhone user - Give it a try, you'll find it in the App Store.  If you are not an iPhone user - CLICK HERE for a list of store coupons you may print.

Homemade Croutons
by Amy Bergin

I love to make salads in summer and in the spirit of sharing my money saving recipes, below is how I make my own croutons!  This is a great use of clearance bakery bread!  My kids love these too!

INGREDIENTS:
1/2 loaf of bakery bread
3 TB Olive Oil
1 TB Bread Dip Seasonings
(JM Exotic Foods, Inc. Brand)
1/2 tsp salt

DIRECTIONS:
Preheat oven to 400 degrees.  Cut bread into cubes, whatever size crouton you like.  I usually cut into 1" cubes (as seen above).  Place on cookie sheet on a single layer.  Drizzle with olive oil on both sides and sprinkle seasonings over both sides lightly.  You may also coat bread with oil and seasonings by using a plastic bag.  Bake until golden brown on one side, then turn each crouton and brown on the other side.

Note:  The Bread Seasonings come in many flavors and it is fun to experiment with using the different herb combinations to produce different flavored croutons.  Use in soups, salads or just for snacking! ORDER HERE

Coupons to use:  Olive oil, seasonings, salt
