Finding YOUR Savings! December 2008
Greetings!

December Greetings!

The New Year is just 9 short days away!  However these last days of 2008 are packed with celebrations of all faiths as it is a holy time of year.  It is also filled with family traditions that are unique to each family.  For example, in my family we cut down a real Christmas tree each year and exchange names for gift giving to make it more personal and less expensive for everyone.  Economizing seems to be the trend this year for many families and retailers are definitely seeing this trend.  I have never seen so many sales ever!  Even I have been tempted to buy something I did not really need simply because it was 75% off!  Be aware of this as you shop these last few days of the holiday season and especially going into the post-holiday shopping season.

How Moms use limited financial resources to satisfy unlimited needs and wants

11AliveThis month, I had the pleasure of teaching my new seminar titled "EcoMomic$" to a classroom full of parents from a local middle school.  On a Friday night while the students attended the school dance, the principal set up 3 seminars each geared towards teaching financial skills for the parent's.  After the parent's dropped their kid(s) off at the dance, they then chose one of three seminars offered and headed off to class!  Valerie Hoff, a local TV reporter from 11ALIVE (who happens to be a fan of The Couponizer) stopped by with a camera crew to film and feature how consumers are eager to learn skills to get through this rough economic time.  Click here for the write-up.  We'll be posting the video footage shortly on our website.

tipTIP - Answers to common questions about saving money with coupons.
The third question in a 3 part series of Q &A

Q :  "When I have a great coupon, I feel compelled to use it even if I don't need the product.  It is especially hard to resist during the holidays when discounts and sales are everywhere.  How can I change this behavior?

Amy's Answer:

During the holiday season the day I stop shopping is the day when all the gifts I planned to buy have been purchased.  That's it, I'm done.  Making up your mind to NOT shop is one way to combat the need to buy something when it is at a deep discount.  If you don't deliberately stop shopping, then all kinds of extra gifts can creep in and blow the budget.  I know I have done this and what I discovered is that once the holidays pass, the good feelings that come with sticking to a set number and dollar limit on gifts last and build confidence going into the New Year.  Starting off the New Year with your finances in good shape frees you to focus on other meaningful goals.

Another way to combat the "But, I've got a coupon" syndrome is to realize that there will always be coupons, so holding off on buying can work in your favor.  For example, this holiday season I saw a beautiful new coat and while I have a coat, I could use a new one.  This coat I liked was a bit out of my price range, so I left it on the rack.  Then it was marked down by $30 the next week and now seemed like it was a good time to buy, but I held off.  Then I received a 30% off your purchase online coupon to the store and now the coat was within a reasonable price range.  So, I printed the coupon and walked it into the store (you can do this at most stores).  They honored it and I got the coat I liked at the a great price.  The catch here is - then a 50% off your purchase coupon came out the next day and if I had waited a bit, I would have received even bigger savings.  If i have the energy, I might go back and see if they will honor it since i saved my receipt!

My point is coupons are plentiful these days and when you apply discipline in waiting to purchase something, you usually wind up with a better price or save yourself the pain of an impulse purchase.
toolTOOL - Bookdarts

Have you ever lost a favorite recipe in a cookbook?  This holiday season you may be frustrated leafing through your cookbooks unable to locate a recipe you made once and loved enough to want to make it again.  Then try using a page marking tool like BookDarts.  These handy metal page markers make it easy to find the recipes you know you want to make again.  This way you are able to view from the page spine where the recipes are actually are located.  This will save you time when you are planning your shopping trip by referencing recipes.  When you cook with ingredients you already have in your pantry and shop for only missing ingredients, you will save money as well.

Dear Amy,
My girlfriend Carla gave me the Couponizer for my birthday this week. This was my favorite gift of all. I couldn't wait to get home and get started on organizing my new book. I've always loved cutting out the coupons but, I didn't like organizing them until I got this book.  Thanks for coming up with such a great idea.

Thank you Mia for writing to me.  I hope you are enjoying big savings!
