Finding YOUR Savings! November 2008
Greetings!

November Greetings!

This month is half over and now rolls on into the end of the year holiday celebrations. In these economic times most everyone is going into spending mode a bit more guarded.  In fact, I was just reading a study on coupon trends and while coupon redemption has declined slightly each year over the last 16 years, it has held steady over the last two.  This means consumers are getting smarter and choosing to find better prices when they can.  Some consumers sadly are forced to spend less and some have decided it is the right thing to do!  The challenge is to make these kinds of choices all the time, not just when times are tough!

Speaking of better prices, when shopping for your turkey, look for sales to start about now until the day before Turkey Day.  If you go fresh, talk to your butcher about when the best time is to buy for the best price and quality.  If you go frozen, then look for the best price and buy anytime, be sure to read the thawing instructions carefully!  If you go out, surf online for Thanksgiving dinner specials and coupons.  Also, join rewards websites like OpenTable.com and earn points for making reservations.  This will save you the stress of waiting for a table and there may be BONUS points for holiday reservations!

The second question in a 3 part series of Q &A

Q :  "How can I get the most out of printable coupons?"

Amy's Answer:

Printing coupons is a great way to add to your collection of coupons from other sources like the Sunday paper.  However if you are not careful, you could wind up wasting resources to get them.  So here are a few tips to make printing coupons as economical as possible so you get the most out of them.

1)  Set your printer to print Black and White or grayscale.  You do not need to print these in color since the color ink cartridges are most expensive and having them printed in color does not increase their value!

2)  Save on paper.  Create a paper pile of printer paper that is still useable on one side to use for printing coupons.   For example, we print out math sheets each night for my kids to practice on and only one side of the paper is used.  If I save these in a pile, then I shoot these through the printer when I print my coupons.

3)  Clip, organize and redeem these coupons as you would any other coupon.  If you don't do this, then your efforts are a waste of MORE time and money since you have to put time and your own paper and ink into retrieving printable coupons.

toolTOOL - Meijer's MealBox

This handy tool is very functional on several levels.  While we do not have Meijer here in Atlanta, I have shopped this store while visiting my sister in Columbus, OH.   I invite you to visit this online tool and explore all the features such as the recipes, shopping list and meal planner.  All these functions bring into one tool the basics of making a weekly shopping and cooking routine that works!

I have been using the Couponizer for about a year.  It is so awesome!  I had tried many different ways to keep things organized, all the different envelopes, a photo album with the little inserts, even a file box!   This makes my coupons so much more readily available and I started to see my savings add up immediately.   I prefer to shop Bi-Lo and Publix because of their sales and double coupons.  I typically save between 30% and 50% on all of my grocery purchases now!   When these stores have their buy on get one free sales and I pair my double coupons with that I am ecstatic!    I have been teaching my 17-year-old daughter how to optimize her coupon savings so that she can take that into adulthood with her.  I have taught her that theoretically you can easily save an ENTIRE days worth of your weekly paycheck just by using coupons and pairing them with sales!

I feel it is very important to teach our children (boys and girls) how to stretch their dollar in these turbulent economic times.  It may take a few extra minutes (I usually spend about an hour in the grocery store now and probably an hour or so a week clipping my coupons while I watch TV) but the savings make it more than worthwhile and the Couponizer makes organization so much easier.

I enjoy your newsletter as well!  It's so encouraging to know that others are taking advantage of the $$ that the manufacturers are handing us for free!

The strategy to achieve under $10 per meal is to buy all the meat on sale and then combine store deals and coupons to buy the rest of the ingriedients.  You may have to pull  a few things from your pantry and spice rack but other than that, $10 a meal can be achieved.  If I can do it, so can you!
