Finding YOUR Savings! September 2008
AmyGreetings!

APPLE SEASON BEGINS!
September marks the beginning of apple season.  In fact, Johnny Appleseed himself was born this month back in 1774.  He was known for spreading apple seeds all over Ohio, Michigan, Indiana and Illinois!  Fruits and vegetables are at their best prices when in season since quantities are high.  Be sure to check out your local farmer's market for fresh apples this season.  We have a friend with apple trees in her front yard and she leaves a ladder out there for anyone to stop by and pick to their hearts content.  If you want to go apple picking for a low cost family outing, go to a search engine and look up local apple orchards.

tipTIP- What to do when your home printed coupons are DENIED!
The cashier is not to blame.

Online coupons have come a long way since they were introduced!  Today printing coupons from home is all about selecting what you want, when you want it and it is fast, and easy to get your savings.  Within minutes, hundreds of dollars in coupons emerge out of the printer; all you have to do is provide the ink and paper.  Sounds wonderful and for those with whom this process works.
However many consumers go through the process of printing, clipping and walking the home printed coupons into the store only to be denied using them by the cashier.  What has happened is the ability to manipulate a coupon offer on paper in the early phases of home printed coupons was too easy for the scammers of the world.  Billions in dollars have been lost to counterfeit coupons according to the Coupon Information Corporation dedicated to coupon misredemption and fraud.

So, here are some tips on what to do if you are denied redeeming coupons printed at home:

1. Find out BEFORE you go through the checkout line if coupons printed at home are accepted at the store.  This will save you the frustration of being denied by the cashier.

2. If you are denied at checkout, don't take out your frustration on the cashier; they are just doing their job.  They have likely not been trained to look for the signs of legitimate home printed coupons in the same way they know how to spot counterfeit currency.

3. Talk to the store manager.  Share how much your loyalty to their store depends on your ability to match value and price.  Ask them what plans are in place to enable shoppers to use these coupons again.

4. Lastly, if the store policies are out of the manager's control, then shop somewhere that does accept your coupons and from time to time check to see if the policy has changed at the other store.
With better bar code technology, security on the internet, and education for store staff about how to spot counterfeit coupons, policies will change since most stores value customers who use coupons legitimately.

drug store bannerEducation is your most powerful tool in learning to save money consistently.  Stephanie Nelson, The Coupon Mom authored a new e-book that details how to leverage more saving through drugstore savings programs.  Most everyone has been exposed to getting a shopper loyalty card from some of the big chains stores like CVS and Walgreens, however few have learned how the system works.  This e-book quickly and concisely covers how you can save hundreds and receive freebies; it is easier than you think!

I know right now we are all feeling the pinch of rising fuel and food costs and wanted to share what I have found to be my best money saving tool.  Several years back I purchased my coupon organizing system, better known as the Couponizer, to help me make sense of the mountain of coupons I clipped but due to the sheer volume hardly used.  So many consumers have purchased this proven system that takes minutes to sort your coupons according to grocery isle along with sections for restaurants, services, retail stores, and even a place to put those gift cards we can never seem to hold onto. I am so excited about partnering with Amy Bergin as a Couponizer Consultant to not only help others to "max their savings" but to also flourish amidst our fluctuating economic times!

I made this and my family when crazy over it.  Watch the baking time to make sure you do not overbake.  Also, we topped it with ice cream and a lille squirt of whipped cream.

Ingredients:
·  1 stick butter, softened
·  1/2 cup sugar
·  2 eggs, lightly beaten
·  2 cups plain (all-purpose) flour
·  1 tbsp baking powder
·  3 tbsp apple cider
·  4 to 5 medium cooking apples, peeled, cored and chopped
·  1/3 cup walnuts, chopped (optional)
·  1/3 cup golden raisins or raisins (optional)
·  1 - 2 tsp aple pie spice
·  2 tbsp clear honey, to decorate (optional)

Directions:
Preheat oven to 350F.  Grease a 9 in cake tin (pan).  Cream the butter and sugar together until pale and light. Beat in the eggs, a little at a time, until incorporated. Sift the flour and baking powder together, then fold them into the mixture (batter) with the cider.  Batter will be stiff.

Fold in the apples, nuts, golden raisins (optional) and mixed spice (apple pie spice) and transfer to the prepared tin. Smooth the surface, making a small dip in the centre. Bake for 1 - 1-1/4 hours, or until a skewer inserted in the centre comes out clean.

Remove the cake from the oven and brush over the clear honey. Cool in the tin for 20 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely. Serve in wedges with creme fraīche if wished.
