Island Family magazine is a publication distributed to families in Hawaii.  My husband was stationed in Pearl Harbor when he served in the Navy after college.  He lived there in his bachelor years, and then we honeymooned in Hawaii so I could see all the sights.  It is so fun to be featured in this magazine and shipping Couponizers to customers from the islands!

TIP- Stick to the Basics!

How to get through this time of economic change.

I have played sports all my life and the one thing every good coach I remember does is stick to the basics.  For example, I still recall my high school basketball coach, Mr. Ellinger drilling me at nearly every practice the fundamentals of a jump shot and free throw.  Even today my tennis coach Kevin does the same thing, he is all about teaching the fundamentals of tennis.  He never wastes our time and my money on coaching me outside of my ability since I am not trying to win Wimbledon!  The same is true for saving more of your hard earned money especially now at a time when prices are increasing faster than we can absorb the shock.

Everyone is feeling the pinch so now is the time to stick to money saving basics which are tied to your financial LIMITS:

1)       KNOW your limits - perhaps it is time to sit down and look at the big picture and adjust some categories of spending in your budget, especially if your living expenses are up and income has remained unchanged.  Ignorance here is not bliss.

2)       HONOR your limits - do what it takes to prevent overspending. Plan the when, where and why you are spending, then shop within a list, look for store deals and by all means use coupons!  Your spending behaviors over time will reveal if you are successful in saving money.

3)       SHARE your limits - in our family we all embrace a common goal of saving money, in other words, doing the best we can with what we have.  Even with our kids, when they have seemingly endless requests for toys, games, sports equipment and activities, we remind them of our common family goal.  This usually provokes much thought which then usually stalls the request until it goes away or we can work something out.  This works on spouses too.

Not rocket science just the basics.

Amy,

Here's my savings story:

Do coupons work? They got me a pair of Prada shoes (on sale with a coupon of course!!) After using the Couponizer and making purchases in conjunction with store sales, I CoupTracked savings of $450 after eight weeks. I averaged $56 saved each week (my most exciting purchase was five tubes of toothpaste purchased for free with store sale and double $1coupon promotion). With part of the savings, I purchased a cute pair of Prada sandals that were on clearance. I never would have been able to afford the shoes otherwise. Some of my friends think clipping coupons isn't worth the effort. Well, gals, get a load of my new shoes!!!

Yummy Banana Bread

Recipe by acclaimed chef Marvin Woods

What's for Sunday Dinner?

This recipe is quick and easy and best with bananas that are overripe. My kids love this healthy alternative to cookies!

Ingredients:

2 large eggs

3/4 cup sugar

1 cup smashed ripe banana (about 3 medium)

1/3 cup sour cream

1 TB canola oil

1 TB vanilla extract

1 ¾ cup all purpose flour

2 tsp. baking powder

½ tsp. baking soda

½ tsp. salt

¼ cup pecans

Preheat oven to 325 degrees F.  Lightly grease 8 ½ X 4 X 2 ½ inch pan; dust with flour.  Using electric mixer; beat eggs and sugar in large bowl until thick and light, about 5 minutes.  Mix in smashed bananas, sour cream, oil and vanilla.  Sift flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt over mixture; beat until blended.  Add pecans pieces.  Transfer batter to prepared pan.  Bake bread for 1 hour or until golden brown on top.  Insert toothpick into center.  It's done when it comes out clean.  Turn bread onto rack and cool.

Coupons to use:  eggs, sugar, sour cream, oil, flour, salt, pecans
