MERRY CHRISTMAS!
We are traveling to Ohio for Christmas this year. My family lives in the Columbus area and yes, even though I live in Georgia, I am a Buckeye - Go Bucks!
Santa is alive and well in the hearts of our children and this year since we are flying, I shipped the packages North. I did not feel bad about the shipping charge since we bought our tickets on SkyBus Airlines. We will fly out of Chattanooga (which is only 2 hours from our house) direct to Columbus for $10 a seat! So for a family of 5, this is a GREAT deal and sure beats driving 10 hours! Sign up for their newsletter so you will know when the low fare seats are available, they fill up fast!
May your holiday be filled with meaningful experiences that create lasting memories whether you are home or traveling to gather with family and friends.
Welcome to all the new subscribers!
All the best savings,

TIP - Time for a Spice Check!
Make way for fresh flavor in 2008.
So many recipes this time of year call for spices that you may not use regularly so without knowing it you could be using spices that are way past their prime! So, McCormick, the spice company is helping consumers through their website identify old spices. Did you know that any McCormick brand spices that are packaged in the rectangular tin (except for black pepper) are 15 years old! When I read this I immediately did a spice check and discovered I had 15 year old nutmeg and I just used it in a recipe! Not the end of the world, but I think it is time for some new nutmeg.
The good news is coupons are readily available for spices this time of year; the bad news is you may discover you need to restock in a big way! It is worth the investment in taste!
Find out if your McCormick brand spices are past their prime - Click here! You will also find many useful tips for keeping your spices fresh.

The Couponizer of the Month - DECEMBER 2007
Colleen Wartham
Kennesaw, GA
Hi Amy,
You came to our MOPS group 2 months ago and shared with us some financial tips as well as your Couponizer Program. Anyway, I just wanted to say how much I love it. It helps keep me organized and on top of my coupons. My favorite sections are "coupons to use this trip" and "coupons that expire this month"! In the last 2 months I have saved over $140 by using your system, allowing me to be more aware of the coupons I have.
I like the fact that there is a pocket to put aside the coupons to use at check-out, since I always plan on using more at the store than I actually do. I also like how the category sections are large enough to put long/big coupons in, before I had to fold them. One thing that is nice is that your categories are pre-printed (however we have the flexibility to change them). In my old coupon organizer I had to write the categories on tabs, but they would always fall out and I wouldn't know what section was for what.
Thanks so much.

The Couponizer Cook
Acorn Squash and Apple Soup
I made this over Thanksgiving and it was a huge hit! You could make extra and freeze it for when a warm cup of soup is needed on a cold winter's night. This recipe came from the side of a box of Kitchen Basics Turkey Stock. Really delicious!
2 medium acorn squash
1 carton (32 oz.) chicken or turkey stock
3 green apples, peeled and diced
2/3 cup chopped onion
1 1/3 cup apple cider or juice
1 TB fresh ginger, peeled & grated
1 1/3 TB fresh lemon juice
Yogurt or sour cream & chives
Cut squash in half; take out seeds, place face down in a baking dish with 3/4 inch of water. Bake squash for 45 min. at 350 F. Cool and scoop out pulp.
In a large pot, cover and cook stock, apples and onion on low heat for 10 minutes. Add squash pulp, cider, ginger and lemon juice. Cover and simmer until ingredients are tender. Puree in blender. Salt and pepper to taste. Serve and garnish with yogurt or sour cream and chopped chives. Makes 8 servings.
Coupons to look for: chicken or turkey stock, apple cider or juice, yogurt or sour cream. |
