The Dotted Line
The Smartest Ways to Save!
|
March 2007
|
|
|
Welcome to all the new Dotted Line subscribers. My
goal each month is to educate and inspire you to
spend money wisely!
So far, 2007 is off to a great start with our family
savings. Below are examples of how I cash in on
savings with our normal family and business
spending:
- booked 4 nights at Marriott Rewards - saved
$600
- joined Blockbuster Rewards, used 2 FREE rental
coupons (get 1 a month) - saved $10
- clipped grocery coupons in January & February -
saved $150
- made homemade pizzas for dinner instead of
ordering out - saved $20
- (my sister did this for me) hit the clearance sales for
winter boots for 2 of my kids - saved $48
- shopped office furniture clearance sales for new
office workstations - saved $400
- used Max Perks coupons for office supplies - saved
$40
- returned used ink cartridges when purchasing new -
saved $9
When you set your mind on savings and stick with the
mindset, opportunities present themselves naturally
and it is worth the payoff. Add it all up and we've saved
$1,277 and the year is just getting started!!
This year I will be focusing my speaking
engagements on how to develop a savings mindset
within your normal spending routines. My new
workshop is entitled "It's Not About the Coupons!"
If you are interested in my workshop, please
e-mail me for availability and details.
And...Happy St. Patrick's Day! Also, St.
Patrick's Day happens to be my
brother's birthday - so Happy Birthday Rob!
Hang in there, Spring is coming!

TIP - Try a Condiment Combo
A simple trick for making the most of toppings on grilled sandwiches.
What happens if you make a grilled sandwich with
shredded cheese instead of sliced? I recently tried to
do this and most of the cheese tumbled out on the
griddle and made a melty mess! It was mozzarella
cheese, I was supposed to use Swiss but I didn't have
any and my kid's are not fond of the sharp taste. Then,
I tried spreading a thin layer of mayonnaise and
mustard on the bread slices to hold everything in but
this was clearly not working. So instead of
abandoning my grilled Cuban sandwich, I decided to
try a condiment combo. The M-M-M combo. Success!
I combined mustard, mayonnaise and shredded
mozzarella cheese in a mixing bowl and then plopped
the mixture on each side the bread, layered the pork
roast and pickles in the middle and then returned the
sandwich to the grill. Everything held nicely together,
the M-M-M combo melted evenly with no waste and
best of all, my family devoured the finished product!
Okay so mine version is not exactly authentic but pretty
close. Click here for a recipe for an authentic Cuban
Sandwich. The good news is most of the ingredients
have coupons readily available!!

TOOL - Shopping Bargains.com
Everything You Need to Save Money Online . . .
Shopping-Bargains.com, LLC was established in
February 1999 as a hobby of Mike Allen who had just
become a father. Mike enjoyed shopping online but
didn't have much money with which to shop. So the
necessity for frugality drove the mother of invention.
Shopping-Bargains.com was established with the
goal of helping mostly family members save money
shopping online.
This website is easy to navigate and find what you are
looking for as well as any available online deals.
Also, Shopping-Bargains.com seeks
to be a family-friendly destination that promotes online
stores with similar family-oriented values. They do not
list stores whose primary purpose consists gambling,
selling alcohol, tobacco or pornography or promoting
violent, hateful and non-family-friendly products or
services.

The Couponizer of the Month
Kristy Trollope
What can I say? The Couponizer is fantastic! I have
been using it for over a month now. I love being able
to flip easily through it without things falling out and
being able to open to where I need it because I do a
lot of comparison shopping. I am planning on buying
several Couponizers for my family and friends who
use coupons. Thank You!

The Couponizer Cook
From my Kitchen...
This recipe I adapted from Betty Crocker?s New
Cookbook, page 318 ? Mandarin Salad. I added
sesame oil and peanut butter to the dressing to give it
a peanut flavor and I changed to rice wine vinegar
instead of white vinegar, also I added the chow mein
noodles for extra crunch!
Crunchy Mandarin Salad
2 Romaine hearts ? sliced into ½? slices and torn
apart
1 cup carrots ? julienne
2 stacks celery ? sliced into bite size pieces
¾ cup chow mein noodles (crunchy)
2 green onions ? chopped
¼ cup almonds
1 tablespoon sugar
1 can (11 ounces) mandarin oranges
Sweet-Sour Peanut Dressing (see below)
Assemble the first 5 ingredients into a salad bowl. In
sauté pan, mix almonds and sugar on high heat, stir
constantly, as sugar melts and almonds toast,
almonds will coat with the sugar, remove when they
are toasted and coated. Place on top of salad. Add in
mandarin oranges and Sweet-Sour Peanut Dressing,
toss and serve.
Sweet-Sour Peanut Dressing
½ cup vegetable oil
¼ cup rice wine vinegar
1 teaspoon sesame oil
2 tsp. creamy peanut butter
2 tablespoons sugar
1 TB fresh chopped parsley
Mix together. Feel free to adjust amounts according to
your taste. This is the fun of making your own salad
dressing!
This salad can be topped with slices of grilled chicken
to make a meal of it! Very refreshing in spring and
summertime.
