Happy Valentine's Day to all my subscribers!

This month I am adding a section to my newsletter called - Couponizer Cooking. In this section will be a recipe that is appealing to the whole family, easy to make and of course, includes ingredients that usually have coupon offers to lower the price. While I may not have legions of sous chefs testing and restesting these recipes, they have been tested over the years by my Mom and sisters.

May they inspire you to be creative and get the most out of your grocery dollars.

    Enjoy!

TIP - Use What You've Got!
You Can Be Creatively Frugal with What's in Front of You

There are many reasons to make a trip to the store...for ingredients to try a new recipe, cleaning supplies that are running low, a special new outfit for an upcoming event. It's just an automatic response that if we need or want something, we go buy it. But is it always necessary to dash out to get we think we need? Or monetarily wise?

Understandably some items are just needed when there needed, like diapers! But other times...stop and think about some alternative possibilities. For instance, when it comes to cooking, different ingredients can be substituted without sacrificing flavor and can produce tasty new results! Click here for a list of ingredient substitutions.

Cleaning supplies are other items that you can concoct right at home with ingredients you likely already have. Vinegar, lemon, ammonia and baking soda are common household items that can be used in different ways to do the job the expensive store- bought brands can do. And it's much less toxic! Click here to find "recipes" for cleaning supplies that will save you time at the store and money in your wallet!

Fashion is always calling us to the mall or our favorite neighborhood boutique. Try shopping at thrift stores and consignment shops if you've just gotta have something new but the checkbook is really maxed. Better yet, look no further than your own closet and I bet you could piece together something smashing in no time. Dress up jeans with a nice blouse, belt and a scarf...try different shirts under sweaters and blouses to give them a fresh look. And wear those boots you've been saving only for special occasions...if you've got it and you like it, wear it! Click here for frugal fashion tips.

As you can see, if you just set your mind to it, what you want or need is probably right in front of you!

On Valentine's Day the Men Outspend

According to several sources like The National Retail Federation and the Society of American Florists, Valentine's Day spending is alive and well. Just look at some of the stats:

    - Men spend more than women. The average male is expected to spend $156.22 this year on Valentine's Day items. This is nearly DOUBLE the $85.08 the average Women plans to spend.

    - 189 million roses were produced for Valentine's Day in 2006. Men make 75% of these purchases. Sorry guys, you will not find any bargains on roses this time of year. Try the day after!!

    - 2007 Valentine Day spending is expected to reach $16.9 billion.

I have to admit I'd rather just make something simple than go out and buy something to acknowlege this day.

    From my Kitchen...

A meat market opened recently in our neighborhood and upon visiting to check out prices, I noticed the beef short ribs were really meaty and trimmed nicely and the price was right ($3.99 per lb.) so I snapped up 2 pounds. Below is the dinner I created from this low cost, high flavor meat. The key to this dish is the cook time which is well worth it.

Beef Short Ribs & Savory Gravy
2 lbs. beef short ribs (make sure they are lean)
    1 can beef broth
    1/3 c. red wine
    2 garlic cloves, minced
    2 TB olive oil
    Salt
    Fresh ground pepper
    2 TB corn starch
    2 TB water

    Garnish:
    Dollop sour cream
    French?s fried onions
    Fresh chopped parsley

Season beef short ribs with salt and pepper. Heat oil in Dutch oven and brown each side of short ribs. Add garlic, beef broth and wine and simmer on low heat for 3 hours, meat is done when it falls apart with a fork. Remove meat and to thicken sauce, turn up to high heat and add cornstarch and water already combined to broth, stir until thickened.
    Serves 4

Plate the short ribs and gravy over mashed potatoes with my garnish suggestion, then add a side vegetable like sugar snap peas and dinner is done!
