                                                                                         January 2012

Greetings!

Happy New Year!  I hope you enjoyed the holidays and had time to recharge.  To keep everyone's spirits soaring, we have a little treat from OBG's 15th Anniversary Party - the OBG Kiss Cam!

Zion_sept11
Happy New Life for Calla!

Even more good news - in 2011 OBG rescued 332 dogs and placed 310 in loving homes!  And the last month has been full of noteworthy adoptions that will warm your heart - 14 year old Sam, 14 year old Freida and special needs dogs Calla and Timmy Chub Chub.  Yes, our adopters - and tireless volunteers - are second to none!

We had a fantastic response to our request to Foster a Lonely Pet for the Holidays.  We almost ran out of dogs to send to fosters, since many of our kenneled dogs had the sniffles.  They have since recovered but are still in kennels - so if you're still interested in a short or long term foster, we have many ready to go right now and are close to capacity.

Last but certainly not least, our first rescue of 2012 was

Zion_sept11
Sweet Oliver is cold without his hair!

a very special lad, Oliver Twist.  He has the worst case of demodex mange we've ever seen, yet this pitiful little soul just soaks up attention and love.  While he is safely in a foster home, his vet bills are estimated at almost $2,000 - please consider a donation for his ChipIn to start the year off right!

Wishing you and your furbabies all the best in 2012 and beyond - thanks for being part of animal rescue!

FOSTER CORNER: SAMMY
**Even if Sammy isn't right for you, we have many more wigglebutts waiting for a foster home!**

Sammy
Strikingly Handsome Sammy

When the clock struck midnight just a few days ago, do you know what Sammy's wish was for the New Year? It was to find a foster or adoptive home - he hopes 2012 is the best year in his young life.

I've featured Sammy on here before - sadly, I need to feature him again.  You see, he's been with us for awhile, but still hasn't found a foster home where he can flourish.

Sammy is housebroken, healthy and knows many commands.  He's been boarding with a trainer to help him be his best for a foster or adopter.

He needs a confident family who is willing to keep him active and engaged - and of course to set appropriate boundaries.   One or two other dogs would be OK, but no little kiddos for this active pooch.

Can you help Sammy's wish come true for the New Year?

Happy Endings: Harley
Tonya
Super Senior Harley!

We received a post on our Facebook page yesterday that was too good not to share.  Meet OBG alum Harley, 16 years old and going strong!  If only they all could live that long . . .

"Harley was one of the first adoptions back in 1997; they thought he was 1 to 2 years old when we met him at the Springfield, VA PetSmart.

We had another cocker, Zack, who died in 2007 so we got Harley because we felt Zack needed a buddy and someone to mentor.  When Zack passed away Harley seemed sad and lonely and for some time roamed around the house looking for him. Three years ago we got another cocker, Tucker, who looks after Harley now.  He keeps Harley active.

Harley is partially blind and deaf now but his nose doesn't let him down.  He can sniff any type of food out in no time and has an endless appetite. He has developed knee issues and at times it keeps him from moving a lot, but after his meds and rest he recuperates and is back running around your feet in the kitchen.  He's still determined to get up on the couch or chair after several attempts and help.

The vets get a kick out of him.  He sees them and rolls over for the belly rubs so they do his exams on the floor. Then he looks for treats from them. He has been a big part of our lives and family. It does get rough watching him age; we love him so much. The vets have said he is one of the oldest cockers they have ever taken care of.

In October this year he will be 17 years old, thanks to OBG. They made such a impact on saving the cockers with the right families and interviews conducted prior to giving them a family. Harley is an example of a great addition to a family. His life started out rough but ended up great."

Shelter Challenge Vote TodayReady, Set, VOTE! New Shelter Challenge Starts   January 9th

Starting Monday please vote daily for OBG in the Shelter Challenge so we can be number one in the nation! It's critical to get off to a good start. It only takes a few seconds to vote -- just use "oldies" as the shelter and VA as the state -- (don't forget to confirm it) and OBG could win thousands!  We won $3000 in 2011 and would love to top that in 2012. If you would like a daily email reminder, just let us know

OBG's Cocker Angel:
Kim Ribble

Over the past year, you've probably met - or at least heard from - Kim Ribble.  She's an incredibly friendly face who participates as a show organizer, foster, transporter and handler - she is especially active in MD, but also makes her way to VA.  Even more incredibly, this mom of three gets her kids involved in the action and makes animal rescue a family affair. OBG is lucky to have a supporter in Kim and we thank her - and her family - for their many contributions to our organization!

27 Dogs Adopted in December -
Including Sam!

SamAt nearly 15 years old, Sam was a true Oldie But Goodie!  And his wish for a forever family for the holidays came true when he was adopted this December.  A few weeks later, he welcomed a new cocker sibling into his adoptive home when OBG's Megh Ann joined the clan.  Talk about a wonderful new life!  Congrats to Sam, Megh Ann, and the other wigglebutts who found happiness this December.
