Help Us Solve a Crime

Do you want to help be the "eyes and ears" of the Chula Vista Police Department (CVPD)? Do you have information about an unsolved crime and want to share it? Do you know something that could help bring closure for the family of a cold case? If you answered "yes" to any of the above questions, then you now have an opportunity to partner with CVPD and their new program entitled, "Help Us Solve a Crime."

Currently, CVPD is focusing on six areas of unsolved crime where the public can provide tips. They are missing adults at risk, missing juveniles at risk, theft/burglary, violent crimes/robbery, unsolved murder/cold cases, and vandalism/graffiti. The CVPD website contains descriptions on these specific areas including photographs. Simply click on the photo to see more information about each case and then, if you have information to share, provide a crime tip to CVPD.

The "Help us Solve a Crime" program offers three options to make a crime tip: call the Tip Line at (619) 422-TIPS (8477), submit a tip online at
www.chulavistapd.org/goto/HelpUsSolveACrime or anonymously contact Crime Stoppers at (858) 580-8477.
More Time for Fun

Effective Saturday, September 8, the city's seven recreation centers will celebrate new longer expanded hours. Grand re-opening open houses will be held on three consecutive Saturdays in September.   Stop by for class demonstrations, arts and crafts sessions, a "Dive-In Movie" and many more fun family oriented activities.

During these additional open hours, residents will have access to a variety of recreation center amenities such as playgrounds, tot lots, game rooms, gymnasiums, fitness centers, and free WiFi. In addition, more sessions of special interest classes such as yoga, arts and crafts, and dance have been added.  Go to www.chulavistaca.gov/rec for more information.

Congratulations to us (this means you)! The California Resource Recovery Association (CalRecycle), one of the oldest and largest non-profit recycling organizations in the country, has recognized the City of Chula Vista as the 2012 Outstanding Household Hazardous Waste program. From July 2011 to June 2012, over 620,000 pounds of hazardous waste was collected at our facility. Located at 1800 Maxwell Road, the HHW facility is open Wednesdays and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Call (619) 691-5122 for more information.

We also received an award for the "Largest Increase in Oil Collection" of any Used Oil Program statewide during 2010-11. Previously, in 2009-10, 28,676 gallons of used motor oil was collected and in 2010-11, that number jumped to 86,728 gallons of used motor oil collected - more than a 200% increase! Unique ideas and program elements, in addition to an increase in areas serviced (Chula Vista is now the lead administrator for the Used Oil Program of seven other South Bay and East County cities), has helped the City achieve this award. If you change your own motor oil, be sure to visit www.wastefreesd.org to find a used oil collection center near you where you can recycle your used oil and oil filters, and pick up a free oil drain pan.
