Healthy Connections Website & e-Newsletter |
Healthy Connections is the district's strategic plan for strengthening coordination and capacity in the Boston Public Schools (BPS) to advance student health and wellness. The BPS Healthy Connections e-newsletter and website (www.bpshealthyconnections.org) seek to promote and raise awareness of the district's coordinated and comprehensive efforts to improve student health and wellness; and will provide updates on the district's progress toward achieving the Healthy Connections overarching goal: To actively promote the health and wellness of all students to support both their healthy development and readiness to learn.
 | Coordinated School Health Model |
Healthy Connections recognizes that its goals are most effectively and efficiently achieved when all the goals are addressed simultaneously through a coordinated approach that purposefully integrates the district's efforts and resources. To achieve its health and wellness-related goals, BPS is currently implementing the Coordinated School Health model recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The newsletter and website will capture the district's multi-departmental implementation efforts in the eight components of the Coordinated School Health model.

Health and Wellness Included in BPS FY2013 Proposed Budget Highlights |
Health and Wellness is one of five components of the BPS Improvements to School Quality and Equity Efforts included in Superintendent Johnson's preliminary budget for the 2013 fiscal year. The $856.5 million balanced budget recommendation was presented to the Boston School Committee on February 1st. The FY13 BPS budget has a 3.1% increase from the FY12 appropriation in order to carry out an Acceleration Agenda for the Boston Public Schools, which is designed to close access and achievement gaps and raise academic performance in every classroom of every school. The budget sets aside funds for Health of Wellness in the following areas: - The hiring of five new school nurses to add to our existing team of 107 positions.
- BPS proposes to increase the funding weight for students with emotional impairments. This change will result in an additional $3.5 million, sent directly to schools, to improve clinical social-emotional support for thousands of students.
- Through a combination of general revenue and external grants, Food and Nutrition Services will offer breakfast to 4,500 more students in FY13, a 20% increase. During the 2012-2013 school year, 29,366 students will receive daily breakfast. We will expand Grab-and-Go breakfast options and make it available at every school. Currently, breakfast is only available at 58 schools.
