About St. Patrick's Church
| Saint Patrick's was founded in 1953 as a mission church from the Falls Church. The congregation met for the first time on January 3, 1954 in the cafeteria of the Graham Road School. The building was completed in 1956. Members of St. Pat's have been known for their involvement in outreach ministries since the very early days of the parish. In 1995, Saint Patrick's became an Anglo-Vietnamese church, a mission of the Diocese of Virginia, and has become more and more multicultural. In January of 2012, Saint Patrick's full parish status was restored and recognized at the 217th Annual Council meeting of the Diocese. Some of us say that St. Pat's is like a window through which we can see God's love. Other parishioners suggest St. Pat's is a "safe haven" for all who seek peace, a quiet place for those who want to find rest. Many in the congregation mention caring is what makes St. Patrick's special to them. Our vision statement reflects what we are in our hearts: St. Patrick's Episcopal Church is a community of care called to be Christ-centered and multicultural in worship, Christian education and action to proclaim Christ's love to the world."

Parish Notes

 - Music Notes. Bell Choir practice will resume on Sunday, September 9th. The bell choir will rehearse every Sunday morning, from 9:15 to 10:00 a.m. New players are needed, and our Mariko Hiller will train those joining the bell choir. Also, if you are interested in singing in adult and youth choirs, please speak with Mariko ( Email: marikohiller@gmail.com. Phone: (703)200-7489). The Children's choir will start when Sunday school starts. They will practice during Sunday school. - The Vestry of Saint Patrick's will meet on Tuesday, September 11th, at 7:30 PM.  - It is now time to think about helping the needy children of Westlawn Elementary School with school supplies. Our Winnie Lebo has prepared a list of the things they need, and has put it on the table in the narthex. If you choose, you may donate cash or a check and our volunteers will do the shopping for you. Just put your check or money in an envelope and place it in the alms basin with Westlawn noted on the envelope and/or on the memo line. Thanks for your thoughtfulness and generosity.
- A meeting on the Community Fall Festival was held after church last Sunday. The date of the event: Saturday, October 13th, from 9 AM to 2 PM -- car trunk sale, antique car show, food, clothing, bake sale and games. All are invited to participate in the festival. |

"Into thy hands, O merciful Savior, we commend thy servant Sylvia. Acknowledge, we humbly beseech thee, a sheep of thine own fold, a lamb of thine own flock, a sinner of thy own redeeming. Receive her into the arms of thy mercy, into the blessed rest of everlasting peace, and into the glorious company of thy saints in light. Amen.

On Last Sunday's Sermon

Proper 15 - Year B - August 19, 2012

The lyrics of Hymn 427, sung at the end of last Sunday's service, served well in echoing the theme of the day: "When morning gilds the skies, my heart awaking, cries, may Jesus Christ be praised! When evening shadows fall, this rings my curfew call, may Jesus Christ be praised!" When we finished singing that hymn, we had sung "May Jesus Christ be praised" ten times. Christians are, indeed, crazy about Jesus!
In the Gospel of John, Jesus said, "Unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you." Cannibalism? The first century's believers were persecuted because they were so enthusiastic about Jesus. Each time they met they spoke about eating the flesh of Jesus and drinking his blood.
Christians, however, do not take the above statement literally. The prologue of the Gospel of John states that the Word has become flesh and dwells amongst us: the eternal Wisdom of God came down from heaven and "became flesh." The world says that is crazy, but Christians say that is the mystery that they proclaim.
On Sunday, we also read from the Book of Proverbs, which must have been familiar to the first century's believers in Jerusalem:
"Come, eat of my bread
and drink of the wine I have mixed.
Lay aside immaturity, and live,
and walk in the way of insight."
Jesus said, "Those who eat my flesh and drink my blood abide in me, and I in them." Christians live in the world but do not belong to the world. They are supposed to be one with Christ. The apostle Paul says, "To me to live is Christ." He also advises, "Do not bear the same yoke with the unbelievers."
Christians do not go around and tell people that they are better and holier than them. But Christians do have their own home in Christ. They go out to the world in their daily life, and they always come home to Christ, to whom they belong.
The author of the Letter to the Ephesians says, "Be careful then how you live." Life is not a playground. Soon this earthly journey will end, and our call is to make this gift of life worthwhile. "Do not get drunk with wine," said he "for that is debauchery; but be filled with the Spirit, as you sing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs among yourselves, singing and making melody to the Lord in your hearts, giving thanks to God the Father at all times and for everything in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ."
Christ calls us to walk in the way of insight, laying aside immaturity. Christ calls us to be one with Him as we go through the pain and hardship of this life. On every Sunday we conclude our Communion time with a prayer that reads, "Send us now into the world in peace, and grant us strength and courage to love and serve you with gladness and singleness of heart."
It is essential that we imitate Him, become like Him, and choose to abide in Him.

- Hội Thánh phân ưu cùng Ông Bill Houston và quư quyến về sự qua đời của bà Sylvia Houston hôm thứ ba vừa qua, ngày 14 tháng 8. Bà Sylvia, 69 tuổi, lâm bệnh từ nhiều năm nay. Lễ an táng của Sylvia sẽ được cử hành lúc 10 giờ 30 sáng thứ bảy tuần nầy, 25 tháng 8, 2012.
- Chỉ c̣n ít ngày nữa là các học sinh sẽ trở lại trường. Đây là lúc chúng ta nghĩ đến nhu cầu của các trẻ em nghèo ở trường tiểu học Westlawn. Chúng tôi đă để trong pḥng narthex một tờ liệt kê các thứ các em cần, để quư vị theo đó mua và mang đến nhà thờ. Quư vị cu~ng có thể tặng tiền, cash hoặc check, để chúng tôi đi mua giùm. Lời Cầu Nguyện cho ngày hôm nay xin Chúa ban ơn để chúng ta có thể bước theo dấu chân Ngài. Cuộc sống là một cuộc hành tŕnh nguy hiểm, và ai cu~ng cần sự khôn ngoan. Khôn ngoan không phải là khôn khéo, hay là "láu." Sự khôn khéo giúp ta len lỏi bon chen, có thể dẫn đến thành công về mặt vật chất hay là được ḷng người khác. Có những điều ḿnh nói hoặc làm tưởng là khôn song hóa ra là dại. Tính láu có thể mang lại lợi lộc song chỉ tạm thời, hoặc chỉ có thể tranh giành với người, song có thể làm hại ḿnh, làm mất tín nhiệm, và có thể đưa đến chuyện thất đức. Sự khôn ngoan lại khác; nó dẫn ta đến đời sống tốt. Sách Châm Ngôn của người Do Thái, trong Kinh Cựu Ước mà chúng ta đọc hôm nay, nhân cách hóa sự khôn ngoan, mà rằng: "Đức Khôn Ngoan lên các nơi cao trong thành phố mà kêu gọi: "Hơĩ người ngây thơ, hăy lại đây... đừng ngây thơ khờ dại nữa, và các con sẽ được sống." Khôn ngoan là một vấn đề con người đă nghĩ đến từ bao nhiêu thế kỷ. Những triết nhân hồi xưa là những người đi t́m sự khôn ngoan. Trong Anh Ngữ có chữ "philosophy" để nói về triết lư. Chữ này do hai chữ Hy Lạp "philo" và "sophia" ghép lại. "Philo" có nghĩa là "yêu," và "sophia" là "khôn ngoan." Thiết tưởng sự khôn ngoan là một món quà Thiên Chúa ban cho một số người đặc biệt, song cu~ng có thể do học tập mà có. Sự khôn ngoan biểu hiện trong nếp sống, qua lời nói và hành động cùng các quyết định. Làm thế nào ta có thể cầm giữ lời nói và quyết định các việc trong đời một cách khôn ngoan? Cuộc đời có giới hạn. Ai cu~ng có ngần âư năm tháng để sinh tồn. Sống là phải vén khéo, và phải chịu khó. Khôn ngoan cu~ng có thể là khả năng chịu đau. Kinh Thánh chép: Sự kính sợ CHÚA là khởi đầu của sự khôn ngoan. Kính sợ Chúa là khép ḿnh vào những giới hạn. Khép ḿnh vào giới hạn là chịu đau, v́ ḿnh phải coi chừng ngôn ngữ và hành động của ḿnh trong mọi hoàn cảnh. Thi Thiên 34 nói rằng: "Kính sợ Chuá đi đoàn dân thánh hỡi; v́ ai kính sợ Chúa chẳng thiếu thốn chi. Sư tử tơ thiếu mồi phải chịu đói, song ai t́m kiếm Chúa chẳng thiếu của ǵ. Các con ơi, hăy đến mà nghe; ta sẽ dạy cho biết đường kính sợ Chúa. Ai là người thiết tha được sống, ước ao chuỗi ngày hạnh phúc chứa chan? Phải giữ mồm giữ miệng, đừng nói lời gian ác điêu ngoa. Hăy làm lành lánh dữ, t́m kiếm b́nh an, ăn ở thuận ḥa." Thánh Phao Lô trong thư gơỉ người Êphêsô nói rằng đừng say rượu. Say rượu là một trong những điều người khôn ngoan tránh. Người khôn ngoan là người t́m biết ư Chúa cho cuộc đời ḿnh, luôn luôn cảm tạ Chúa trong mọi sự. Như thế, noi dấu chân Chúa là đức khôn ngoan mà ta hằng t́m kiếm. Đức Giêsu thế nào th́ chúng ta muốn bắt chước thế ấy. Chúa có đủ sức mạnh để diệt những người ác làm hại Chúa, song Chúa không diệt họ. Chúa dạy những chuyện ngược đời, như thương người thù, tha thứ cho kẻ hại ḿnh. Chúa không làm những chuyện sai quấy gian lận. Đức Giêsu cu~ng luôn luôn ư thức về cái chết của ḿnh. Ư thức về cái chết của ḿnh là khởi điểm cho bước đường t́m khôn ngoan. Chính v́ ư thức đó mà người ta trở nên can đảm, trầm tĩnh, nhẫn nhục, ḥa thuận, chịu đựng và không quá ngạc nhiên khi đau khổ xảy đến th́nh ĺnh. Nhờ ư thức đó mà người ta không c̣n chạy trốn thực tại, bằng ḷng chấp nhận những ǵ xảy đến cho đời sống của ḿnh, và không c̣n như con thuyền bị gió thổi lênh đênh hết chỗ nầy đến chỗ khác, không c̣n hốt hoảng. Thi Thiên 90 nói: "Cầu xin Chúa dạy chúng con biết đếm các ngày của chúng con, hầu cho chúng con được ḷng khôn ngoan." Noi dấu chân Chúa có thể là đếm các ngày ḿnh sống, hay là tính ḿnh c̣n sống được bao nhiêu năm nữa, và trong khoảng thời gian đó ḿnh thực sự muốn điều ǵ cho ḿnh và cho những người quanh ḿnh. Đó chính là đối diện với cái chết của thân xác ḿnh và trở thành người quư sự sống, biết rằng sự sống đó tồn tại vĩnh cửu, mặc dù có rất nhiều điều huyền bí mà ta không biết. Theo Chúa rất khó, song chúng ta tin bơỉ ơn Chúa chúng ta có thể thực hiện được. Ơn đó là ǵ? Đó là Chúa có thể chiếm hữu chúng ta và khiến chúng ta trở nên giống như Ngài. Chính v́ vậy Ngài tuyên bố trong Phúc Âm Giăng rằng: "Ta là bánh hằng sống từ trời xuống, người nào ăn bánh nầy sẽ sống đời đời." Sự ngự trị của Chúa trong ḷng người tin là một lẽ mầu nhiệm. Mỗi khi chúng ta dự Tiệc Thánh, chúng ta mời Chuá vào ḷng và biến đổi ḿnh, để dạy ḿnh sự khôn ngoan cuả Ngài.
