About St. Patrick's Church
| Saint Patrick's was founded in 1953 as a mission church from the Falls Church. The congregation met for the first time on January 3, 1954 in the cafeteria of the Graham Road School. The building was completed in 1956. Members of St. Pat's have been known for their involvement in outreach ministries since the very early days of the parish. In 1995, Saint Patrick's became an Anglo-Vietnamese church, a mission of the Diocese of Virginia, and has become more and more multicultural. In January of 2012, Saint Patrick's full parish status was restored and recognized at the 217th Annual Council meeting of the Diocese. Some of us say that St. Pat's is like a window through which we can see God's love. Other parishioners suggest St. Pat's is a "safe haven" for all who seek peace, a quiet place for those who want to find rest. Many in the congregation mention caring is what makes St. Patrick's special to them. Our vision statement reflects what we are in our hearts: St. Patrick's Episcopal Church is a community of care called to be Christ-centered and multicultural in worship, Christian education and action to proclaim Christ's love to the world."

Memorial Day Greetings, Dear Friends, from a Warming I'Bad! I hope this finds you well. Our House Church has begun! You may have heard that the Catholic Church on the Diplomatic Enclave learned that many of us (virtually the entire choir, the prayer group, and the lay volunteers who helped with local charities) were not Catholics. The new priest decided that we could not receive the Sacrament of Holy Communion. Our little community was quite taken aback-especially because the Holy See in both Afghanistan and Iraq has allowed all baptized Christians to receive Holy Communion in those similar high-risk countries. So--we decided to look elsewhere for our spiritual support.
Happily, we have found a wonderful Anglican priest, who serves in Islamabad as a missionary. We have begun a House Church Service with Fr. Steve and his wife, Jenny. We held our second communion service at my home yesterday. Nearly 15 people came to the Pentecost service, followed by a potluck supper. It was lovely to have everyone-there is something quite special in celebrating the Eucharist in a home-based setting. I feel certain that more will join in the weeks to come. There is such a hunger for the spiritual life here-living apart from our family and friends in this environment takes us one step deeper into ourselves, and brings us in touch with what's most important in life. I'm so very thankful that we have this opportunity to share the Eucharist together. And-I've learned the identity of the Mystery Messenger. Earlier I wrote that I received wonderful text messages from an unknown source. I found the messages quite inspiring, and began looking forward to the daily wisdom they offered. A few new ones to share:Good morning! A man said to God, "I hate life. It's not beautiful." And God replied, "Who told you to love life? Just love me and life will be beautiful." Good morning. "Changing the face" can change nothing but "facing the change" can change everything. Try it please! Good morning, Jee. It is the fire of suffering that makes us pure gold. Remember that suffering is the jewelry of a believer in Christ Jesus. I was struck at how many messages deal with suffering. And then one morning one of our Motor Pool drivers walked up to me, greeted me, and asked, "Are you receiving my messages?" I did a double-take, and then everything fell into place. Mr. Joseph is the Mystery Messenger! I met Joseph when he was assigned to take me on one of my trips. He told me about his former job with the Asia Foundation, and how TAF always provided books to families of employees. He also shared the difficulties of being a Christian in a land full of persecution. It's difficult for Christians to get jobs, to find housing, to receive equal educational opportunities, etc. The persecution is alive and well in so many of the countries where we serve. Joseph also told me about his church, and the many children who come to Sunday School class. It's wonderful to learn of their community and to hear his stories. And so it made complete sense that he was the author of these messages. How honored I am to receive them! Blessings to each of you this day. Thank you, thank you for your ongoing prayers and support! All are invited to attend the meeting. - On Sunday, June 10, we will celebrate Saint Patrick's Sunday School Program, and there will be a potluck following the service. Please bring food for the event. Many thanks to Maggie Spinelli, coordinator, and to those who teach our children. We thank also the youth who assisted the teachers. Đại Ư Kinh Văn Chúa Nhật Vừa Qua

Chúa Nhật Ngu~ Tuần, May 27, 2012 Kinh Văn: Giăng "Lúc nào Thần Chân Lư đến th́ Ngài sẽ dẫn các con vào mọi chân lư." Đây là Lời Chúa trong Phúc Âm Giăng đoạn 15 mà chúng ta đọc hôm nay, Ngày Ngu~ Tuần 2009. Chân Lư là điều chúng ta tin quyết có thật. Chúng ta tin quyết điều ǵ có thật? Có người cho rằng những sự việc trên đời không có thật và tất cả chỉ là aỏ ảnh, v́ không có ǵ tồn tại vĩnh viễn. Ví dụ như ta tưởng rằng thành công hay của cải là điều làm ḿnh thấy đời có ư nghĩa, rồi một ngày nó tan biến, th́ ta cho rằng nó là không có thật. Ta cu~ng hay bám vào t́nh người để sống, song đến một ngày t́nh người cu~ng hết, rồi ta nói t́nh người là aỏ ảnh. Ta lại nghĩ đến đời sống, ta cho là đời là tạm, và không có thực. Như thế chắc là mọi sự đều không có; như thế không có chi làm cho ta hy vọng sao? Các tín hữu hồi thế kỷ thứ nhất tin rằng mặc dù mọi sự trên đời xem như là ảo ảnh vẫn có một chân lư đời đời. Chân lư đó là Thiên Chúa có thực, và rằng Thiên Chúa đă đến thế gian. Tất cả các đoạn trong Phúc Âm Giăng đều lập lại "lời nói đầu" của cả sách trong đoạn 1: "Ban đầu có Ngôi Lời. Ngôi Lời ở cùng Đức Chúa Trời, và Ngôi Lời là Đức Chúa Trời. Muôn vật được dựng nên trong Ngài, và không có vật chi được dựng nên mà không bởi Ngài. Trong Ngài có sự sống và sự sáng. Sự sáng đă soi trong tối tăm, và sự sáng không bị sự tối tăm lấn át. Ngài đă đến trong thế gian, song thế gian không nhận biết Ngài. Nhưng hễ ai đă nhận Ngài th́ Ngài ban cho quyền phép trở nên con cái Đức Chúa Trời." Chữ quyền phép (power) tức là năng lực, khả năng, tự bên trong mà Chúa cho, không phải do ḿnh. Quyền phép ấy, theo các tín hữu hồi xưa, là quyền năng của Đức Thánh Linh. Ngài chính là Thần Lẽ Thật, hằng hiện diện trong ḷng những ai tin nhận Đức Giêsu Kitô làm Chúa của đời ḿnh. Niềm tin ấy khởi đầu từ ngày Thánh Linh hiện xuống, như ta nghe kể trong truyện tích Ngu~ Tuần, sách Công Vụ Các Sứ Đồ đoạn 2. Trong ngày Thánh Thần Chúa hiện xuống trên các môn đệ Đức Kitô, họ hết sợ hăi và công bố Phúc Âm bằng nhiều thứ tiếng ngoại quốc mà họ trước đó không biết nói. Họ thấy h́nh lưỡi bằng lưả đậu trên đầu mọi người. Kể từ ngày ấy, người tin Đức Giêsu biết rằng Chúa có thật, và Chúa hiện diện bên cạnh ḿnh trong mọi hoàn cảnh. Nhờ có hy vọng và thoát khỏi sợ hăi, đời trở nên có ư nghĩa. Cho dù nhiều sự trên đời là aỏ ảnh, vẫn có một điều chân thật: đó là sự hiện diện của Thần Chúa. Không những Chúa có thật và đang có mặt, Ngài là Đấng Yêu Thương. Đấng Tạo Hóa chính là Đấng Cưú Chuộc đầy t́nh thương. Họp lại trong ngày Chúa Nhật, chúng ta nhắc nhau về sự hiện diện và t́nh thương của Chúa. Dùng lời nói không đủ. Phải thể hiện niềm tin trong đời sống thực tiễn. Chúng ta có thể nói rất nhiều về sự hiện hữu và hiện diện của Chúa, song cách sống của ḿnh có nói lên được hai điều đó chăng? Nếu chúng ta nói rằng Chúa hiện diện th́ chắc phải sống niềm tin Chúa nh́n thấy ḿnh từng bước. Một mặt, niềm tin ấy làm cho vững tâm; mặt khác, làm ḿnh cẩn thận về các hành vi hay lời nói. Nếu chúng ta nói rằng Chúa yêu thương, th́ chúng ta nghe tiếng gọi bước theo Chúa trong sự yêu thương: t́nh thương của ḿnh phải trở nên giống như t́nh thương của Chúa. Mặc dù không thể nào có được t́nh thương trọn vẹn của Chúa, ta vẫn phải cố tập noi theo. Trong Ngày Ngu~ Tuần, chúng ta nói về sự hiện diện của Thánh Thần. Sự hiện diện ấy không phải để ta khoe sức mạnh quyền phép, hay khoe ta thuộc về ai, nhưng nó đ̣i hỏi ta phải hành xử đúng theo điều Chúa muốn, và mục đích là để nhắc ta chân thành nhiệt tâm công bố t́nh thương của Chúa trong những ngày ta sống trên đời. |

- Ngày thứ bảy tuần nầy, 2 tháng 6, là ngày làm sạch sẽ nhà thờ. Xin quư vị tham dự vào việc chăm sóc cho nơi thờ phượng của chúng ta.
- Vào ngày Chúa Nhật, 3 tháng 6, sẽ có một buổi họp để bàn về việc tổ chức chợ mùa thu (trước đây gọi là Bazaar). Kính mời tất cả quư anh chị em tham dự), sau lễ.
- Vào ngày Chúa Nhật, 10 tháng 6, chương tŕnh Trường Chúa Nhật tại nhà thờ chúng ta sẽ kết thúc. Xin quư vị mang theo thức ăn cho bữa tiệp potluck. Nhà thờ cám ơn Bà Maggie Spinelli cùng các quư vị đă giúp dạy các em, và sẽ phát chứng chỉ cho các em đă theo học. Đồng thời, nhà thờ sẽ tặng quà cho các học sinh tốt nghiệp trung học năm nay: Ola Thomas, Charlie Pizzola, Graham Parvikarimi, và Joe Dubas.
