About St. Patrick's Church
| Saint Patrick's was founded in 1953 as a mission church from the Falls Church. The congregation met for the first time on January 3, 1954 in the cafeteria of the Graham Road School. The building was completed in 1956. Members of St. Pat's have been known for their involvement in outreach ministries since the very early days of the parish. In 1995, Saint Patrick's became an Anglo-Vietnamese church, a mission of the Diocese of Virginia, and has become more and more multicultural. In January of 2012, Saint Patrick's full parish status was restored and recognized at the 217th Annual Council meeting of the Diocese. Some of us say that St. Pat's is like a window through which we can see God's love. Other parishioners suggest St. Pat's is a "safe haven" for all who seek peace, a quiet place for those who want to find rest. Many in the congregation mention caring is what makes St. Patrick's special to them. Our vision statement reflects what we are in our hearts: St. Patrick's Episcopal Church is a community of care called to be Christ-centered and multicultural in worship, Christian education and action to proclaim Christ's love to the world."

Gifts for Newcomers
 In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
In this morning's gospel reading from John we are welcomed into a prayerful conversation between Jesus and God. The prayer we hear is commonly referred to as the "Priestly Prayer" and has three basic parts: Glorification of God, Guidance of the Disciples of Jesus, and Unity among all Christians.
Focusing on the guidance of the disciples of Jesus, I have spent some time this week reflecting on my experiences with you at St. Patrick's. In a similar way that Jesus guided his disciples, you all have served as guides to me during my discernment and I could not have asked for more as a newcomer to St. Patrick's.
Bishop Gulick spoke about newcomers at the Bishop's Retreat at Shrine Mont last week. He often asks the adult baptism and confirmation candidates why they chose to stay at their particular churches when they were newcomers. Each response Bishop Gulick discussed reminded me of a particular moment for me as a newcomer at St. Patrick's.
--- Newcomers often say they are grasped by the preaching at a church. ---
During the four months that I have been here I have heard 4 different preachers and a number of sermons. The diversity of thought and experiences that are shared from this pulpit are a gift to all of us. You have a talented preacher in Tinh+ who not only speaks the truth but acts upon his words.
--- Other newcomers say they feel the presence of Jesus in a church. ---
I know many of us here today have felt the presence of Jesus at St. Patrick's. Jesus is with us when we pray over the St. Patrick's email list for a friend or relative who is about to go to the hospital for surgery. Jesus is with us when we embody his goal of community during our Coffee Hour and special celebrations like Tet. And Jesus is with us at St. Patrick's when loved ones die, jobs are lost, and relationships are broken. You all have shown me the presence of Jesus each and every time I am with you.
--- Still other newcomers mention the ability to use thought and reason within the context of Christianity at a particular church. ---
I immediately recollect our most recent vestry meeting during which we had a brief discussion about the confines of both science and religion. Religion does not have to be a zero sum game with those in agreement on the inside and those who disagree on the outside. There is room for reason, and even room for disagreement within the Christian faith. You all continually use both faith and reason to think about the role of Christianity in our ever-changing world.
--- Another common answer Bishop Gulick receives from newcomers is: "I want my life to make a difference." ---
All of you opened my eyes to the differences you make in the lives of others with the simple gesture of opening your door. You opened your door to area homeless women during the season of lent to provide a warm, safe, and comfortable place for them to sleep. You make a difference in this larger community.
--- And finally, the most common response Bishop Gulick hears is that "This community accepted me." ---
St. Patrick's Episcopal Church - first described to me as an Anglo-Vietnamese Mission is now so much more to me. Not only have we been given parish-status, but we are also an international, interracial, and intergenerational community that is open to all.
What more is there to living out the gospel in our daily lives than to be accepting of everyone as a child of God?
You have not only accepted me, but you have welcomed my mother, my cousin, and my girlfriend with a sincere interest in getting to know each of them. You have made my family members feel like they are part of your family.
In a world where we hear about tragedies like the Trevon Martin shooting on a daily basis - you are a model for the "melting pot" that America is supposed to be. You have shown me that God loves everyone.
Just like the talents, passions, and strengths of St. Patrick's as a church, each and every one of us has a particular set of talents, passions and strengths. Our individual gifts make up the Body of Christ and are essential elements of the ministries of the risen Jesus.
God sent Jesus into the world and Jesus has sent us into the world.
Today's Gospel reading concludes with a very straightforward call to action of particular relevance to our gifts as a community.
Jesus says, "As you have sent me into the world, so I have sent them into the world. And for their sakes I sanctify myself, so that they also may be sanctified in truth." Truth is attained when we are sanctified - and bound by commitment - to the life Jesus sent us to live: the life we know so well at St. Patrick's when we stop to think about our gifts as a congregation welcome to all newcomers. Amen.

 - Please pray for blessings for Anh-Minh Matthew, son of our Julie and Kevin Tran, who will be baptized at the 10:30 AM service of this Sunday, the Day of Pentecost. The Sunday School class will not meet this Sunday. All the children will be in church for the baptism, and Fr. Tinh will give a children's sermon. All are invited to attend the reception following the service.
- Saturday, June 2, will be our clean-up day. Please come to join us in taking care of our house of worship. Our Junior Warden Vivian Benjamin will give out assignments for the day.
- On Sunday, June 3, there will be a meeting after church to plan the October 13th's Community Fall Festival. All are invited to attend the meeting. - On Sunday, June 10, we will celebrate Saint Patrick's Sunday School Program, and there will be a potluck following the service. Please bring food for the event. Many thanks to Maggie Spinelli, coordinator, and to those who teach our children. We thank also the youth who assisted the teachers. On the same day we will also recognize and congratulate our young adults who will be graduating from high school: Ola Thomas (June 8), Charlie Pizzola (June 9), Graham Parvinkarimi (June 13), and Joe Dubas (June 14). - Our condolences to Tammy Vanphung, on the death of her eldest brother, Mr. Trần Văn Phổ, on May 17, 2012. - Our Lễ Cao is recuperating well at The Virginian, following spine surgery. Please continue to pray for her. Le's phone number at the rehab is 703-279-3468. - Many thanks to Christopher Miller, who led our youth and some of our adults to the baseball game on Sunday, May 20th, and to Hugh Nicholson for his generous gift of tickets to the event.  - Many thanks to the scouts and their parents for their work on Saturday, May 19th. Mulch was put around the trees, bushes around the church building were cleared, and a gate was installed to cover the dumpster area.  - Following the property litigation, which ended in favor of the Diocese of Virginia and the Episcopal Church, all seven CANA congregations have returned their church buidings to the Diocese. However, the leadership of the CANA congregation now known as the Falls Church Anglican has made it clear that they will appeal before the Supreme Court of Virginia unless the Diocese pays them a large sum of money. The Diocese and the Episcopal Church are unwilling to do so, and they remain strongly confident in their legal position. The bishop's clerk works for a year as a traveling assistant, driving the bishop, supporting the work of his ministry and office. Chúa Nhật Thứ 7 của Mùa Phục Sinh, May 20, 2012 Kinh Văn: Giăng 17:6-19 Hôm nay là Chúa Nhật chót của Mùa Phục Sinh. Chúa Nhật tới là Lễ Ngu~ Tuần. Phúc âm cho hôm nay là lời cầu nguyện của Đức Giêsu cho các môn đệ, nói lên chân lư rằng những người theo Chúa thuộc về Ngài, và bởi Thánh Linh mà họ có Chúa ngự trong ḷng và họ ở trong Chúa. Họ không thuộc về thế gian. Con người không phải là thần thánh và cu~ng không phải là thú vật. Ta giống muôn vật về những nhu cầu căn bản của thân xác, song ta khác chúng về khả năng suy nghĩ phức tạp và trí thông minh. Mặc dù có ham muốn, ta có sáng kiến, có khả năng tiến bộ và có t́nh thương là những điều gần giống như Thiên Chúa -- Chúng ta tin rằng ḿnh được dựng nên theo h́nh ảnh của Chúa Trời. Chúng ta đă sa ngă, mất sự tương thông mật thiết với Chúa, và bị kéo về gần hơn với hầu hết các loài vật (như quá chú tâm về cái ăn, chỗ ở và tính dục), và xuống thấp hơn nữa, trở nên kém hơn loài thú (như ác tâm muốn giết hại lẫn nhau). Đức Giêsu là trung gian giữa Trời và người. Ngài vừa là Thiên Chúa vừa là người. "Tất cả những ǵ của Cha là của Con... con ở trong họ và họ ở trong con." Như đă nói trong bài học tuần trước, mối tương quan giữa Ba Ngôi Thiên Chúa nói lên t́nh thương mật thiết toàn vẹn.. Chúng ta là những môn đệ Đức Kitô của thế kỷ 21 cu~ng phải sống đúng theo lời cầu nguyện của Ngài. Đây là một lối sống đầy thách thức: phải làm theo ư Chúa mỗi ngày, thực hiện t́nh thương cho mọi người, theo gương Đức Kitô. Thánh Phao Lô nói rằng t́nh thương phải cho thành thật: ghét sự dữ mà mến sự lành. Ông khuyên người ta phải nói thật với nhau. Trong coĩ đời hiện nay, sống theo Phúc Âm không phải dễ. Nói th́ dễ, song làm th́ khó. Chính v́ vậy sự học tập là một tiến tŕnh cho cả đời. Mỗi khi thất bại th́ lại học thêm một điều mới. Không có t́nh thương nào là không có nỗi đau. Chúa cu~ng đ̣i chúng ta phải ḥa giải. Giữa thế gian đầy tranh đấu, người Kitô-hữu phải t́m sự ḥa giải. Đây cu~ng là một điều rất khó mà Chúa đ̣i hỏi: Không ḥa giải, không được ở trong Nước Trời. Lời dạy của Đức Kitô buộc chúng ta phải suy nghĩ và có thái độ trước những chuyện bất công và ác đức. Có nhiều khi lời dạy đó làm chúng ta ái ngại, nhất là khi thấy mặt trái hay những sai lầm của những người ḿnh vẫn kính trọng hay ủng hộ -- người đồng đạo hay vị lănh đạo ḿnh đă bầu lên. Rất tai hại nếu chúng ta tưởng rằng Chúa cu~ng nghĩ giống như ḿnh -- khoác lên cho kẻ thù bộ mặt quỷ để được tự do tiêu diệt họ. Chưa chắc Chúa đă đồng ư với ḿnh. Là Kitô-hữu, chúng ta được gọi học biết để nới rộng tầm nh́n, để có cái nh́n của Chúa trước mọi sự việc trên đời. Rơ ràng, lời cầu nguyện của Đức Giêsu ẩn chứa ư tưởng rằng Kitô-hữu sống trong đời song không thuộc về đời. Người môn đệ của Chúa không thể làm một với thế gian. |

- Chúa Nhật tuần nầy, nhằm Ngày Ngu~ Tuần, chúng ta sẽ làm phép Báp Tem cho em Anh-Minh Matthew, con của Ông Bà Trần Anh Hào. Xin quư vị cầu nguyện Chúa ban phước trên em bé. Lớp Trường Chúa Nhật sẽ không họp trong ngày đó, để các em dự lễ chung với mọi người, và Mục Sư Tỉnh sẽ giảng cho các em. Kính mời quư vị cùng ở lại sau lễ để dự tiệc trà do gia đ́nh của Anh-Minh khoản đăi.
- Ngày thứ bảy, 2 tháng 6, là ngày làm sạch sẽ nhà thờ. Xin quư vị tham dự vào việc chăm sóc cho nơi thờ phượng của chúng ta.
- Vào ngày Chúa Nhật, 3 tháng 6, sẽ có một buổi họp để bàn về việc tổ chức chợ mùa thu (trước đây gọi là Bazaar). Kính mời tất cả quư anh chị em tham dự), sau lễ.
- Hội Thánh xin phân ưu cùng bà Châu Hà về sự qua đời của người anh cả là Ông Trần Văn Phổ, ngày 17 tháng 5, 2012.

- Nhà thờ cám ơn các em hướng đạo cùng quư phụ huynh đă làm công tác suốt ngày thứ bảy, 19 tháng 5, để bỏ mulch chung quanh cây cối trong khuôn viên St. Patrick's và làm một cái cổng che khu phía sau bếp.
- Vào ngày Chúa Nhật, 10 tháng 6, chương tŕnh Trường Chúa Nhật tại nhà thờ chúng ta sẽ kết thúc. Xin quư vị mang theo thức ăn cho bữa tiệp potluck. Nhà thờ cám ơn Bà Maggie Spinelli cùng các quư vị đă giúp dạy các em, và sẽ phát chứng chỉ cho các em đă theo học.
