About St. Patrick's Church
| Saint Patrick's was founded in 1953 as a mission church from the Falls Church. The congregation met for the first time on January 3, 1954 in the cafeteria of the Graham Road School. The building was completed in 1956. Members of St. Pat's have been known for their involvement in outreach ministries since the very early days of the parish. In 1995, Saint Patrick's became an Anglo-Vietnamese church, a mission of the Diocese of Virginia, and has become more and more multicultural. In January of 2012, Saint Patrick's full parish status was restored and recognized at the 217th Annual Council meeting of the Diocese. Some of us say that St. Pat's is like a window through which we can see God's love. Other parishioners suggest St. Pat's is a "safe haven" for all who seek peace, a quiet place for those who want to find rest. Many in the congregation mention caring is what makes St. Patrick's special to them. Our vision statement reflects what we are in our hearts: St. Patrick's Episcopal Church is a community of care called to be Christ-centered and multicultural in worship, Christian education and action to proclaim Christ's love to the world."

 - This Sunday, May 20th, we will celebrate Christopher Miller's ministry at St. Patrick's as he finishes the Young Priest Initiative Internship program. Christopher will preach, and there will be a potluck after church. A graduate of Harvard, Mr. Miller will enter Virginia Theological Seminary this fall and, God willing, ordained ministry in three years. Please bring food for the potluck of this Sunday.
- Led by Christopher Miller, St . Patrick's Youth Group will be attending a Washington Nationals baseball game this Sunday, May 20th. Many thanks to Hugh Nicholson for donating the tickets.  - Congratulations to ourJay Parrotta, organist, who graduated from the Catholic University with a Master of Music in Composition with a Concentration in Concert Music, on Saturday, May 12th. - Our  Joe Dubas, trombonist, will perform with the American Youth Philharmonic Orchestra on Sunday, June 3rd, 3 PM, at the Center for the Arts at George Mason University, Fairfax, Virginia. The program will include music of Gershwin, Hindemith, Mozart, Bach and Strauss. Tickets: $14 Adult | $10 Senior (65+) | $10 Student. Free for Music Teachers. - On Sunday, June 10, we will celebrate Saint Patrick's Sunday School Program, and there will be a potluck following the service. Please bring food for the event. Please pray also for Mr. Hector Hamilton, brother of our Maggie Spinelli, in England, who is going through treatment for cancer.

Abiding in His Love
 In most societies, the time of one's death is one of the most important events in a person's life. In Africa for example, this last hour was most important especially when the one dying was the head of the family -- the father or mother, because it was the time the dying person would distribute the inheritance to his children. In the past, because it was such an oral society, the dying parent would send for all his/her children to come around him as soon as he sensed the admonition of death. Every word spoken by the dying parent would be narrated over and over again by those who heard it as part of the eulogy. And their wills were announced at the funeral and must be carried out to the word, because people believed that the dead also see.
The Gospel text read to us today falls in this category of speeches. It was will spoken by our Lord Jesus Christ at the last hour to his disciples. According to biblical scholars, it falls in the section of Johannine Gospel normally referred to as the Farewell Discourse.
In 15:1-8, Jesus calls upon his disciples to abide in him so that they can bear fruit. In vss.9-17, Jesus continues that theme of abiding. And here, Jesus goes on to explain to his disciples what he means by the call to abide in him.
He means that to "abide in him" is to abide in his love. His command is to love one another. Therefore, to abide in Jesus, is to love one another. Jesus explains this call in two ways: First, by his own personal example. He abided in his father's love by obeying his (God's) commandment. As a result, the Father has loved him. He explains that he did this as an example for his disciples to follow -- that they may also abide in his love. In Phil.2:5-10, Paul describes Jesus' obedience to his Father thus, "He humbled himself even to the point of taking the form of a slave." His example is that of humility. This is agape love. Friends, it is difficult to love genuinely when we do not have the virtue of humility. Humility is considering your neighbor as better than yourself. It is to put the other person's needs ahead of your own. It is being able to restrain your arrogance even when you are right and your neighbor is wrong. It is counting others better than yourself. As a certain preacher did put it, "Humility is not weakness, it is power under control."
We human beings are by nature proud and selfish. We love to see ourselves better. We love to put ourselves first. Jesus is today calling us to follow his own example. He obeyed his Father even to the point of dying a shameful death on the cross. And you know it is in his obedience that the Father's love for us is revealed. Second, He has made his grace available to them. He says I have loved you. Jesus' love is an empowering love. His love enables us to do things that we are not able to do because he holds nothing back. In v.15, he says, "I have called you friends because I have made known to you everything that I have heard from my father." Jesus has given us all that we need to fulfill his commandment. He has given us grace. In fact, from the vine and branches metaphor, you realize that, the branches which do not abide on the vine bear no fruit and are summarily cut off by the vine dresser. The mystery is that just as the vessels transport water and nutrients from the roots to the branches for the leaves to function in photosynthesis, in the same way it is through Jesus that we receive the divine grace necessary for us to function as Christians. When we stick close to Jesus, nothing becomes impossible for he is there to carry it with us.
Friends, I have come to learn in my journey as a Christian that, God never expects of us too much that he has not given us enough grace to bear with. He never places us in situations of embarrassment where we are totally unable to function.
You could be passing through a situation that seems to be completely unbearable today. What God requires of you is to trust in his love and he will release sufficient grace for you to forebear the situation. In 1Cor.10:13, Paul says, "No testing has overtaken you that is not common to everyone. God is faithful and he will not let you be tested beyond what your strength, but with the testing he will also provide a way out so that you may be able to endure it." You may be living with people who are totally unlovable. Look to God, he will give you a way out of it.

Chúa Nhật Thứ Sáu của Mùa Phục Sinh, May 13, 2012 Kinh Văn: Giăng 15:9-17 T́nh thương là một vấn đề khó giải thích. Chữ "t́nh" trong tiếng Việt thật là phong phú, với những ư nghĩa khác nhau trong nhiều trường hợp. T́nh bà con, t́nh bạn, t́nh vợ chồng, t́nh giữa cha mẹ và con cái, t́nh yêu trai gái. Hầu như tất cả các bài ca Việt Nam đều quy về liên hệ t́nh yêu, về hôn nhân thành tựu hay đổ vỡ. Chữ "love" thường được hiểu một cách phiến diện như vưà nói trên. Trong nguyên ngữ Hy Lạp, thứ ngôn ngữ đă được dùng viết kinh Tân Uớc, có nhiều chữ khác nhau diễn tả "yêu thương": eros, epithymia, philia và agape. Người ta thường phân ra chữ nào là t́nh thương của người và chữ nào là t́nh thương của Chúa, song sự phân biệt ấy cu~ng không thể lột tả hết được ư nghĩa về t́nh thương trong kinh văn. Phúc Âm Giăng 15:9-17 mà chúng ta đọc hôm nay dùng chữ a-ga-pê cho t́nh thương, mặc dù là chỉ tả được một phần nào của điều Chúa muốn nói. Chữ t́nh thương trong đoạn kinh thánh nầy diễn tả đức yêu thương của Chúa Trời: tính tốt đẹp vô cùng của Chúa mà chúng ta có thể dự phần do ân điển Ngài. T́nh thương nầy chú tâm vào mỹ đức của người khác mà không chú tâm vào cái tốt của ḿnh -- Biết bao người tối ngày nghĩ hay khoe ḿnh tốt như thế nào. T́nh thương nầy cu~ng không cốt để làm chủ hay cầm quyền trên người khác -- Biết bao người nghĩ rằng ḿnh "yêu" song lại cứ túm chặt lấy người yêu, và có khi nuốt trửng họ luôn. Chữ a-ga-pê nói lên một thứ t́nh-thương-mặc-dầu: mặc dầu thế nào cu~ng vẫn thương. Nó là thứ t́nh thương không giới hạn theo thời gian, không gian, hay là tiêu chuẩn. Một người có agape có thể có ít bạn, song t́nh thương của người ấy lại đạt đến tất cả mọi người. Đó là t́nh thương của Chúa. Đối với Ki-tô-hữu, mẫu t́nh thương chân thật tiềm tàng trong tâm Chúa Trời. Theo cách diễn đạt của Đức Giêsu, các môn đệ phải theo mẫu ấy mà Ngài đă khuôn rập từ nguồn T́nh Thương. Ta thường cầu nguyện cùng Ba Ngôi Thiên Chúa. Điều đó có nghĩa ǵ? Ba ngôi, Cha, Con và Thánh Thần hiệp một trong t́nh yêu thương: không ganh tị, không lấn át, không ích kỷ -- dành cho phía được yêu một khoảng tự do để hiện hữu. T́nh thương nầy vô cùng sung măn, không bờ bến, không giữ lại chút nào. Thánh Augustine diễn tả bản chất của Thiên Chúa Ba Ngôi là Đấng Yêu Thương, Đấng Được Yêu Mến và T́nh Thương liên hiệp cả ba. Đây chính là khuôn mẫu cho chúng ta. Đây không phải chỉ là một ư tưởng cao đẹp để nói cho hay, nhưng là một kỷ luật về sự chăm sóc mà ta phải tập cả đời. Muốn có t́nh thương của Chúa th́ ta phải tập. Quư vị có thể nói "tập làm chi?", yêu theo kiểu tôi được rồi." Song nếu muốn có sự vui mừng thật và đời sống tốt th́ phải có được t́nh thương của Chúa. Trong câu 15, Đức Giêsu nói Ngài không gọi các môn đệ là đầy tớ nữa, song gọi họ là bạn. Như thế, ư nghĩa thần học của t́nh thương được diễn tả theo t́nh bạn ra làm sao? Chúa bảo: không có t́nh thương nào lớn hơn là thứ t́nh v́ bạn mà phó sự sống ḿnh. Triết gia Hy Lạp Aristotle nói rằng bạn là cái ta thêm vào cái ta của ḿnh. Bạn có ảnh hưởng trên sự h́nh thành con người luân lư. Gần mực th́ đen, gần đèn th́ sáng. Aristotle nói rằng cách hiệu quả nhất để giữ cho ḿnh những đức tính tốt là ở gần và bắt chước người tốt. Ḿnh ở gần ai th́ sẽ trở nên giống như người đó. Aristotle nói có ba loại bạn: thứ nhất là người ở gần th́ có lợi, như là giới có thế lực hay thành công, để móc nối; thứ hai là người để ḿnh giao thiệp cho vui; nhưng thứ ba là loại bạn chỉ dành cho mục đích của t́nh bạn, và đây chính là loại bạn tốt nhất. Loại bạn nầy phải t́m và chọn th́ mới có, v́ không phải tất cả bạn đều được như thế. Đây là thứ bạn làm khuôn cho ḿnh -- là những người có t́nh thương của Chúa; ở gần họ th́ sẽ lây được tính tốt ấy. Đức Giêsu nói nếu các con là bạn của ta th́ sẽ làm theo điều răn của ta. T́nh bạn đó không phải là hời hợt, không phải là để cầu lợi hay vui chơi. Chuá nói về một thứ t́nh bạn sâu đậm mà Aristotle gọi là t́nh bạn tốt nhất. Chúa gọi chúng ta trở nên bạn của Chúa, và qua t́nh bạn đó chúng ta mong được thấm nhuần t́nh thương Ngài, để t́nh thương đó biến thành t́nh thương của chúng ta, và để chúng ta yêu mến lẫn nhau như Chúa đă yêu chúng ta vậy. |

- Chúa Nhật tuần nầy, 20 tháng 5, Hội Thánh sẽ có một bữa tiệc potluck sau lễ để cám ơn anh Christopher Miller, "Young Priest Initiative Intern" vừa hoàn tất chương tŕnh tập sự tại Saint Patrick's. Christopher đă quyết định đi theo tiếng gọi trở thành Mục Sư, và sẽ bắt đầu học tại Chủng Viện Virginia vào tháng 9, 2012. Christopher sẽ giảng hôm đó, và sẽ hướng dẫn thiếu niên đi xem baseball vào buổi chiều. Xin quư vị mang theo thức ăn cho bữa tiệc potluck.

- Nhạc Sĩ Jay Parrotta, 22 tuổi, trưởng thành tại Saint Patrick's, sẽ tŕnh tấu phong cầm tại nhà thờ Christ Church, Cambridge, Maryland, lúc 4 giờ chiều, Chúa Nhật, 20 tháng 5, 2012. Jay vừa tốt nghiệp bằng Cao Học Âm Nhạc, chuyên khoa sáng tác và tŕnh tấu, tại Đại Học Catholic University, Washington, D.C.
- Vào ngày Chúa Nhật, 10 tháng 6, chương tŕnh Trường Chúa Nhật tại nhà thờ chúng ta sẽ kết thúc. Xin quư vị mang theo thức ăn cho bữa tiệp potluck. Nhà thờ cám ơn Bà Maggie Spinelli cùng các quư vị đă giúp dạy các em, và sẽ phát chứng chỉ cho các em đă theo học. Đồng thời, nhà thờ sẽ tặng quà cho các học sinh tốt nghiệp trung học năm nay: Ola Thomas, Graham Parvikarimi, và Joe Dubas.
- Ông Toua Vang, chủng sinh tập sự tại Nhà Thờ Thánh Patrick, sẽ được Giám Mục Giáo Phận Minnesota phong chức phó tế (deacon) vào hạ tuần tháng 6. Ông đă hoàn tất năm thứ hai tại chủng viện. Vào tháng 5 sang năm (2013), ông bà và gia đ́nh sẽ trở về Minnesota sau khi ông tốt nghiệp Cao Học Mục Vụ.
