The Vision of St. Patrick's
|
Saint Patrick's Episcopal Church is a community of care, called to be Christ-centered and multicultural in worship, Christian education and action to proclaim Christ's love to the world.
|
About St. Patrick's Church
| Saint Patrick's was founded in 1953 as a mission church from the Falls Church. The congregation met for the first time on January 3, 1954 in the cafeteria of the Graham Road School. The building was completed in 1956. Members of St. Pat's have been known for their involvement in outreach ministries since the very early days of the parish. In 1995, Saint Patrick's became an Anglo-Vietnamese church, a mission of the Diocese of Virginia, and has become more and more multicultural. In January of 2012, Saint Patrick's full parish status was restored and recognized at the 217th Annual Council meeting of the Diocese. Some of us say that St. Pat's is like a window through which we can see God's love. Other parishioners suggest St. Pat's is a "safe haven" for all who seek peace, a quiet place for those who want to find rest. Many in the congregation mention caring is what makes St. Patrick's special to them. Our vision statement reflects what we are in our hearts: St. Patrick's Episcopal Church is a community of care called to be Christ-centered and multicultural in worship, Christian education and action to proclaim Christ's love to the world."

Easter Day Sermon
|
Easter Day - Year B - April 8, 2012
Text: John 20:1-18 Tinh Huynh+
-------------------
"Woman, why are you weeping?"
In the Name of God: the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. Amen.
-------
The refrain of the sequence hymn that we sang this morning reads, "Love is come again like wheat that springeth green."
Love is come again?
Is that possible?
Sounds unreal, doesn't it?
Yesterday I was glad to hear the sound of the lawn mower on church grounds for the first time since last summer. The green leaves have come back, and so have the robins and the bees.
The coming back of the leaves and birds and animals in spring is natural. But, what about the coming back of love?
If love has gone, or is lost, can love ever come again?
----------
We are living in a weeping world.(1)
Many years ago, I saw on the Washington Post a picture of a young woman with her husband, a soldier, just before the time he left for Iraq. As he waited for the call to the bus, the couple sat on the ground, against a wall.
Her arms were around him.
Her eyes were swollen.
-----------
We all are weeping, for various reasons.
We weep over our losses, mortality and imprisonment.
We weep over our brokenness -- broken relationships, war, poverty, failures and guilt.
The whole world is weeping. No tear is left.
We have been numb to human suffering. Pain has been here for so long that you don't feel much of it.
We may have been oblivious to our own weeping.
------------
Love is come again?
Can that happen?
Sounds unnatural, doesn't it?
Do we believe in resurrection?
-------------
In the Easter story that we heard this morning, Mary Magdalene encountered the angels and the Risen Lord when she was alone in that dark and spooky place, the empty tomb - distraught, frightened, and puzzled. Twice did she hear this question, "Woman, why are you weeping?"
------------
Mary did not recognize the two men in the tomb as angels. Neither did she recognize Jesus. She was very much focused on the loss of the body of the Master. The dead body of Jesus was the only thing that occupied her mind. She did not see Jesus standing next to her, until he called her by name.
She turned toward Him who called her, and she recognized Him. She could have decided not to turn, but she made the right choice.
The moment she saw the Risen Lord was also the moment of her own resurrection. Later, she said, "I have seen the Lord." Resurrection sounds unnatural, but it can be real for you and me.
-------------
In his Letter to Christians in Corinth, Paul says that the Risen Lord appeared to the apostles and to him. Paul says, "He appeared also to me." The appearance and call of the Risen Lord is not only for a few special persons. His appearance and call are for all.
Christ might have been appearing to us and calling us, in different ways and at different times, and yet we might not have recognized Him. Perhaps we have too many "dead bodies" to worry about: grudges that we don't want to let go; things that someone did that we find impossible to forgive; things that we did, for which we are unable to forgive ourselves.
Mary turned to Jesus, and everything changed.
Love is come again -- life has come back -- just because the Lord makes his presence known to us, and because we choose to listen to his voice and choose to turn to Him.
Verse 4 of the hymn that we sang reads,
"When our hearts are wintry, grieving, or in pain,
Thy touch can call us back to life again,
Fields of our hearts that dead and bare have been:
"Love is come again like wheat that springeth green."
------------
"Why are you weeping?"
All we have to do is turn to Jesus.
------------
Alleluia! Christ is risen.
The Lord is risen indeed. Alleluia!
Amen.

Đại Ư Kinh Văn Chúa Nhật Vừa Qua
|
