About St. Patrick's Church
| Saint Patrick's was founded in 1953 as a mission church from the Falls Church. The congregation met for the first time on January 3, 1954 in the cafeteria of the Graham Road School. The building was completed in 1956. Members of St. Pat's have been known for their involvement in outreach ministries since the very early days of the parish. In 1995, Saint Patrick's became an Anglo-Vietnamese church, a mission of the Diocese of Virginia, and has become more and more multicultural. In January of 2012, Saint Patrick's full parish status was restored and recognized at the 217th Annual Council meeting of the Diocese. Some of us say that St. Pat's is like a window through which we can see God's love. Other parishioners suggest St. Pat's is a "safe haven" for all who seek peace, a quiet place for those who want to find rest. Many in the congregation mention caring is what makes St. Patrick's special to them. Our vision statement reflects what we are in our hearts: St. Patrick's Episcopal Church is a community of care called to be Christ-centered and multicultural in worship, Christian education and action to proclaim Christ's love to the world."

 Our condolences to Mark and David Aronstein and their family on the death of beloved Bob Aronstein, 82, in Silverspring, Maryland. Bob died suddenly on Sunday evening due to post-surgery complications.
The date and time for the memorial service for Bob Aronstein will be announced.

- Broyhill Park's Annual Easter Egg Hunt, open for Broyhill Park families, will be held at Saint Patrick's this Sunday, March 25th, at 1:00 PM (Rain date: April 1). (Note: St. Pat's Easter Egg Hunt, for St. Pat's children, will be held on Easter Day, April 8, time TBA)
- After five years on diocesan staff, Tyler Fox, church missions officer and assistant to Bishop Gulick, has left his position at the Diocese to move to Germany with his wife. Christopher Miller will serve as temporary, part-time assistant to Bishop Gulick.
- The bishops of the Diocese invite clergy to attend the Reaffirmation of Ordination Vows and Blessing of Oil of Chrism. Four services will be held during Holy Week, all at 11 a.m.: on April 3 at St. Peter's in the Woods, Fairfax Station; on April 4 at Emmanuel, Woodstock; and on April 5 at Epiphany, Richmond and at St. Stephen's, Culpeper.

Nicodemus and Jesus. Two contrasts are apparent in the story: fear and love; darkness and light.
Nicodemus was a powerful leader of the Jewish society at that time, and yet he had fears. He visited Jesus in the evening. Imagine the fearful Nicodemus emerged from darkness. Was he fearful of mortality, or of rejection, or of both? Jesus told him about being born of the Spirit, and then about God's love and the Light.
Jesus said to Nicodemus, "Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the wilderness, so the Son of Man must be lifted up that everyone who believes may have eternal life in him."
Snake?
From the Book of Numbers, the First Reading of the day read, "The Lord sent poisonous serpents among the people, and they bit the people, so that many Israelites died."
Snakes and humans never get along. Can a snake-sending God love the people? In the Old Testament story, the Israelites in the desert were hungry, tired and thirsty. They were bored with the food God sent from heaven. Finding the journey arduous, they spoke against God, testing God to see if God would give in to their demands. Then came the snakes!
The repentance of the Israelites is the crux of the story. An antidote to the deadly bites was then given:

a bronze serpent, hung on a pole, would save those who look at it. God still loved them. It is not easy to be God, isn't it? How do you balance between grace and judgment?
"God so loved the world." This belief was embraced by the early Christian. Is it relevant to us today?
Once in a while I see on the roads a car bumper sticker that reads, "Smile, God loves you."
Smile? Your smile does not necessarily say you are happy. You cannot be truly at peace unless you know you are loved. Perhaps I had not really put into practice the belief that I am God's beloved. I have a lot of fears, and perhaps I have let my fears overwhelm me. Love and fear never get along.
In the booklet "From Fear to Love," which contains reflections by Henri Nouwen on the Parable of the Prodigal Son, we find the following for the Fourth Sunday in Lent:
"In my own life I well know how hard it is for me to trust that I am loved, and [how hard it is] to trust that the intimacy I most crave is there for me. I most often live as if I have to earn love, do something noteworthy, and then perhaps I might get something in return... My return is my willingness to renounce such thoughts and to choose to live more and more from my true identity as a cherished child of God."
God's love for us is steadfast love. His loving-kindness endures for ever. The light has come to shine in darkness. God calls us to return to the source of life and love. Fear can prevent us from returning, and yet we have to make the first steps. God, by His Grace, will raise us up, and we will live to proclaim Christ's love to the world.
And how do we proclaim Christ's love to the world?
 Oftentimes we may think of proclaiming Christ's love in spectacular things, like speaking fervently on Jesus, the Bible and the Holy Spirit, or like providing shelter to the homeless and food to the hungry.
Seldom do we think of proclaiming Christ's love in a much more challenging task, like approaching someone to apologize sincerely for our words or deeds that inflict wounds upon the person. We can find many reasons for not doing that, out of fear. The Bible says, "Perfect love casts out fear."
Psalm 107 reads, "Let them thank the Lord for his steadfast love, for his wonderful works to human kind."
"And let them offer thanksgiving sacrifices, and tell of his deeds with songs of joy."

"V́ Đức Chúa Trời yêu thương thế gian, đến nỗi đă ban Con một của Ngài, hầu cho hễ ai tin Con ấy không bị hư mất mà được sự sống đời đời." Câu 16 của Phúc Âm Giăng đoạn 3, câu quen thuộc cho người theo Kitô-giáo, nằm trong truyện tích về cuộc đàm thoại giữa ông Ni-cô-đem và Đức Giêsu. Trong truyện nầy có hai mối tương phản: sợ hăi và t́nh thương; tối tăm và ánh sáng.
Ni-cô-đem là một người có thế lực trong xă hội Do Thái thời đó, song lại có những nỗi lo sợ. Ông ta t́m gặp Đức Giêsu trong ban đêm. Tưởng tượng Ni-cô-đem hớt hải xuất hiện từ bóng tối. Thử hỏi ông ấy sợ điều chi? Sợ chết, hay sợ người đời khước từ ḿnh, hay sợ cả hai điều đó? Đức Giêsu nói với Ni-cô-đem về sự sanh lại bởi Thánh Linh, và nói luôn về t́nh thương của Đức Chúa Trời và về Sự Sáng.
Đoạn Phúc Âm chúng ta đọc vào ngày Chúa Nhật khởi đầu từ câu 14: "Xưa Môi Se treo con rắn ở sa mạc như thế nào, th́ Con Người cu~ng sẽ phải bị treo lên như thế, để hễ ai tin Ngài th́ được sự sống vĩnh cửu trong Ngài."
Rắn?
Truyện tích trong sách Cựu Ước Dân-số-kư chép: "CHÚA sai rắn độc vào giữa ṿng dân chúng, và rắn cắn nhiều người Ít Ra En chết."
Rắn và người không bao giờ ḥa hợp với nhau. Lẽ nào một Đức Chúa Trời đầy t́nh thương lại sai rắn cắn người? Trong truyện Cựu Ước, dân Do Thái sống du mục trong sa mạc. Họ mệt mỏi, đói và khát. Chúa cho họ một thứ thức ăn từ trời, song họ ăn măi đâm chán. Không chịu nổi cái khó của cuộc hành tŕnh, họ nói nghịch cùng Chúa, thử xem Chúa có chiều theo sự đ̣i hỏi của họ. Lúc đó rắn ḅ tới!
Sự ăn năn của người Do Thái là chính yếu trong truyện tích nói trên. Chúa cho họ "liều thuốc" giải độc: ai nh́n lên con rắn bằng đồng treo giữa hoang địa th́ sẽ không chết. Chúa vẫn c̣n thương họ. Làm CHÚA không phải dễ! Làm sao quân b́nh giữa ân sủng và phán xét?
"Thiên Chúa quá thương nhân loại." Các Kitô-hữu thời xưa đă nắm chặt lấy niềm tin ấy. C̣n chúng ta th́ thế nào?
Thỉnh thoảng tôi trông thấy một chiếc xe có dán nhăn đề: "Smile. God loves you." Cười? Cười chỉ là một sự biểu lộ bên ngoài: chưa chắc bên trong đă có niềm hạnh phúc. Nếu không thực sự thấy ḿnh được yêu mến th́ không có cái b́nh an để cười. Tôi có nhiều nỗi sợ, và nhiều khi ḷng ḿnh tràn ngập xao xuyến. Có lẽ tôi đă không thực sự sống được niềm tin rằng tôi được Chúa yêu (1). T́nh thương và sự sợ hăi không bao giờ đi chung.
Trong cuốn sách nhỏ tựa đề "From Fear To Love," dựa trên truyện Người Con Hoang Đàng mà Đức Giêsu kể (2), Linh Mục Henri Nouwen viết cho phần suy gẫm của Chúa Nhật Thứ Tư trong Mùa Thống Hối như sau:
"Từng trải cuộc sống đă khiến tôi hiểu rằng rất khó sống theo niềm tin ḿnh được Chúa yêu, và rất khó nắm lấy niềm tin rằng sự thân thiết mà tôi hằng khao khát đă có sẵn cho tôi. Lúc nào tôi cu~ng nghĩ ḿnh phải như thế nầy hay thế kia th́ mới được thương mến, phải đạt được điều chi đáng kể th́ mới được chấp nhận... Sự "trở về" của tôi là chống lại các tư tưởng nói trên, và chọn sống đúng theo tư thế thực sự của ḿnh là một người con yêu dấu của CHÚA."
T́nh thương của Thiên Chúa cho chúng ta là t́nh thương kiên-tŕ. Sự nhân từ thương xót của Ngài c̣n đến đời đời.
Ánh sáng đă soi trong cơi tối tăm. Chúa gọi chúng ta trở về với nguồn sống và t́nh thương. Sự sợ hăi có thể chặn lối về của chúng ta, song chúng ta phải làm bước đầu tiên. Ân sủng của Chúa có thể đỡ chúng ta chỗi dậy, và chúng ta sẽ sống để công bố t́nh thương của Đức Kitô.
Chúng ta công bố t́nh thương của Chúa như thế nào?
Thường khi ta nghĩ công bố t́nh thương của Đức Kitô phải là làm những chuyện huy hoàng, như là giảng hùng hồn về Đức Giêsu hay nói nhiệt t́nh về Đức Thánh Linh, hay là dọn chỗ trú ẩn cho người vô gia cư và tặng thực phẩm cho người đói (3).
Ít mấy khi ta nghĩ chuyện công bố t́nh thương của Đức Kitô đích thực, khó hơn mấy chuyện nói trên, như t́m đến xin lỗi người ḿnh đă xúc phạm và gây thương tổn, v́ lời nói hay hành động của ḿnh. Ta có thể t́m nhiều lư do lẩn tránh, chỉ v́ sợ hăi (4). Kinh Thánh có câu: "T́nh thương trọn vẹn đánh đuổi sự sợ hăi."
Tác giả Thi Thiên 107 nói: "Nguyện họ cảm tạ CHÚA v́ t́nh yêu thương kiên tŕ của Ngài, V́ các việc diệu kỳ Ngài đă làm cho con cái loài người."
"Nguyện họ dâng tế lễ tạ ơn Và công bố những công việc của Ngài qua những bài ca vui vẻ." T́nh thương và sự sáng đi đôi với nhau.

(1) Thay v́ tin quyết vào t́nh thương Thiên Chúa, ta hay t́m t́nh thương của người, khao khát sự chấp nhận và chạy theo tiếng vỗ tay của người. Ta ngỡ ngàng thấy ḿnh chạy theo ảo tưởng, v́ t́nh thương của người là bất toàn. Không có chi làm cho bất hạnh hơn là thấy ḿnh vẫn cô đơn.
(2) Truyện "Người Con Trai Hoang Đàng" trong Phúc Âm Lu-Ca. Đức Giêsu kể rằng một người kia có hai con trai. Đứa con út đ̣i lấy trước cho được phần gia tài của ḿnh rồi đi biệt xứ, ăn chơi nhậu nhẹt cho đến khi hết tiền, phải ở đợ, chăn heo. Đến khi quá khốn khổ, muốn ăn thức ăn của heo mà cu~ng không được phép, hắn mới lần ṃ t́m về nhà cha xin tạ lỗi. Ngờ đâu, cha vẫn c̣n thương, mừng rỡ vô cùng chạy ra đón con từ đàng xa.
(3) Nói quá nhiều về Chúa, hay về chuyện công đức, cu~ng có thể là một lối "t́m tiếng vỗ tay của người." Nơi nhóm họp của cộng đoàn tin kính có khi trở thành diễn đàn khoa trương.
(4) Con đường của Đức Kitô là con đường thập tự -- hạ ḿnh khiêm tốn - và đó chính là con đường dẫn đến phục sinh. Phải an trú trong t́nh thương Thiên Chúa mới có thể làm được.
