About St. Patrick's Church
| Saint Patrick's was founded in 1953 as a mission church from the Falls Church. The congregation met for the first time on January 3, 1954 in the cafeteria of the Graham Road School. The building was completed in 1956. Members of St. Pat's have been known for their involvement in outreach ministries since the very early days of the parish. In 1995, Saint Patrick's became an Anglo-Vietnamese church, a mission of the Diocese of Virginia, and has become more and more multicultural. In January of 2012, Saint Patrick's full parish status was restored and recognized at the 217th Annual Council meeting of the Diocese. Some of us say that St. Pat's is like a window through which we can see God's love. Other parishioners suggest St. Pat's is a "safe haven" for all who seek peace, a quiet place for those who want to find rest. Many in the congregation mention caring is what makes St. Patrick's special to them. Our vision statement reflects what we are in our hearts: St. Patrick's Episcopal Church is a community of care called to be Christ-centered and multicultural in worship, Christian education and action to proclaim Christ's love to the world."

- The children of Westlawn Elementary School sent us the above poster, for the Christmas Angel Tree gifts that they received. The giant thank-you note has been posted at the back of the sanctuary, by the kitchen window.
 - This Sunday, February 12th, our youth group will go ice skating at Fairfax Ice Arena. This event will be open for grades 4 and up. We will carpool, and will leave the church at about 12:45 PM. Participants of the event will bring their own bag lunches. Drinks and snacks for the afternoon will be supplied. Parents will need to sign a permission form. Many thanks to the Lebo family for the free passes for those who want to skate, and to St. Pat's for covering the costs of skate rental. Please remember to bring gloves, a jacket, and to know your shoe size. Skaters should also wear thin socks that come up to mid-calf or so.
Remember the ice rink is cold.
The group will return to St. Pat's about 4:30 PM.

- This year's Shrove Tuesday will be February 21st. Chief cook for the Shrove Tuesday Dinner will be Pauline Leonard. Pauline will need help in the kitchen. If you can help, please speak with Tinh+ or Tom Auld. - Ash Wednesday services will be held at 10:30 AM and 7:30 PM on February 22nd. All are invited to attend. Ash Wednesday begins the 40-day season of Lent, and worshipers of the day will receive the imposition of ashes with the words, "Remember that you are dust, and to dust you will return." Lent is the time for self-examination and repentance. Psalm 51, appointed for Ash Wednesday, begins saying, "Have mercy on me, O God, according to your loving-kindness; in your great compassion blot out my offenses." Lent is also the time for listening to God's call, and to take action in following Christ. Lent reminds us of our mortality and, at the same time, points to our hope of resurrection in our Lord.  - The Celebration of the Life of Sheila Henderson will be held on Saturday, February 25th, at 11 AM.- Children's Choir Festival -- February 26th -- 7:00 PM.

- Saint Patrick's will collaborate with Volunteers of America in the Hypothermia Shelter Program in the upcoming Lenten season. For the five weekends of March, 2012, Saint Patrick's will provide overnight shelter to 15-20 homeless women on each Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Supervised by Volunteers of America, the group will come around 8:00 PM on each scheduled evening, and they leave early in the morning of the next day. Our church members are invited to volunteer to open the church door for them as they come. Sign-up sheet will be available soon in the narthex.
- Upcoming Parish Youth Ministries (PYM) Event.PYM Spring Day of Service will be March 17 at St. Andrew's, Arlington -- registration is now open. The PYM Senior High Weekend will take place April 13-15 at Shrine Mont. For more information about these events please speak with Bobby Dubas.  - St. Pat's parents are encouraged to send their children to summer camps at Shrine Mont. If you have any question about this please speak with Tinh+. The brochure on Camps and Events at Shrine Mont is now available in the narthex. Registration for summer camps began on January 4, 2012. Sign up by March 16, 2012 and save $20.00. Any family sending more than one youth to camp will receive a $25 discount off each child's tuition. You may register online, at camps.thediocese.net. A non-refundable deposit of $75.00 is required. Scholarship aid requests will begin to be reviewed on May 2, 2012. St. Pat's has received 5 copies of the brochure. Please pick up a copy if you are interested. Register your child early. |

- Annual Bishop's Jubilee on July 14 Shrine Mont will host the Annual Bishop's Jubilee on July 14 this year. On the same weekend, Shrine Mont and the Diocese of Virginia celebrate 50 years of Shrine Mont Camps. Tickets will be sold at the gate, or online thru the Diocese of Virginia. - Bookkeeper Opportunity. Trinity Church/Arlington has immediate opening for an experienced bookkeeper. Proficiency in Quick Books required (will be tested prior to hiring). Familiarity with Excel and MS Word desired. Responsibilities include preparing disbursements, entering bills on QuickBooks, processing checks, monthly P&L and Balance Sheet reporting, bank reconciliations, maintaining budget and general ledger, and year end reporting. - "Stuff The Bus." In conjunction with Fairfax County's Office of Partnerships, FCS Food Pantry will be participating the "Stuff the Bus" program on Saturday, Feb. 18 at the Shoppers Food Warehouse grocery store at Seven Corners.
Display will be set up and shoppers will be able to purchase food items for FCS pantry, which will then be loaded on to one of the Fastran buses. Last year FCS collected about 1100 pounds of food. This year the County office is hoping they can double that amount, to assist area residents with emergency food needs.
Shoppers Food Warehouse will have some 'pre-packaged' grocery bags, available for purchase at $5 each which will contain items the Food Pantry currently needs. Or, shoppers will have a list of other items which they can purchase and place in receptacles as they leave the store.

On Last Sunday's Lessons
|
|
On the 5th Sunday after the Epiphany we read from the Gospel of Mark the story of Jesus healing the sick and casting out demons. This story comes notably at the very beginning of a Gospel that eventually culminates in the death and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ: the Light has come to drive away darkness, and the the Kingdom of God is at hand. Restoration of health happens at the touch of the Divine. Amidst sorrow there is the hope of resurrection.
Is the healing in Mark merely about physical weakness and disease? Certainly not! The healing of the body in the gospel story points to the healing of the soul, and resurrection its liberation. Our collect for the day reads, "Set us free, O God, from the bondage of our sins, and give us the liberty of that abundant life which you have made known to us in your Son our Savior Jesus Christ." Psalm 147 also states, "He heals the brokenhearted, and binds up their wounds." Couldn't all these negative words -- bondage, sickness, woundedness -- be applicable to us? Oftentimes our inner wounds remain hidden to us, and so does our anger.
The Sunday Paper that our children took home from Sunday School has a helpful section for parents on its back page. In the issue for this last Sunday it speaks about God's healing gifts, and about how children from a very young age can learn to trust in the Lord, the source of their strength. Most striking is its suggestion on meaningful time spent with the child, and the parent's role in "laying the groundwork for a lifetime of discipleship and openness to God's healing gifts."
Soon our children will begin to experience loneliness and face life's challenges. The words from the Bible and the faith that has developed in them may be helpful when things are difficult. The 6th century B.C.'s Jews, who languished as slaves in Babylon, once heard from the prophet Isaiah, "But those who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength, they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint." Aren't those words for today's Christians?

Hôm Chúa Nhật trước đó Bà vẫn c̣n đến thờ phượng tại nhà thờ. Sheila đến với Nhà Thờ Thánh Patrick cách đây khoảng 15 năm, do lời giới thiệu của người bạn thân là Bà Nancy Burch. Lúc mới đến, Bà dạy Anh Ngữ cho người Việt tại Nhà Thờ. Bà cu~ng gia nhập Ban Chấp Hành, và nhiệt tâm ủng hộ Chương Tŕnh Nhạc Thính Pḥng Odeon. Lễ tưởng niệm Sheila sẽ được tổ chức tại Nhà Thờ vào lúc 11 giờ sáng, ngày thứ bảy, 25 tháng 2. Trong di chúc, Bà đă soạn sẵn các đoạn Kinh Thánh và bản Thánh Ca cùng người đọc do bà yêu cầu. Bà Sheila muốn có nhạc chuông trong lễ, và nếu được th́ Nam-Trân Mai đọc Kinh Thánh. Bà không muốn chôn tro, song rải tro tại vùng núi Skyline, Virginia, theo địa điểm định sẵn trên bản đồ. Và bà nhấn mạnh là không có chuyện than khóc buồn rầu ("No mourning, no long faces allowed"). |

Chúa Nhật Thứ Năm Trong Mùa Hiển Linh
Kinh Văn: Ê-sai 40:21-31, Thi Thiên 142, Mác 1:29-39
Sức mạnh tinh thần là lư do chúng ta đến thờ phượng Chúa. Sức mạnh của thân thể là cần thiết, song rất nhiều khi nhờ tinh thần mạnh mà người ta vượt qua được nhiều thử thách. Trong thời buổi kinh tế suy sụp, những điều làm cho người ta vững chí trước đây có thể bỗng chốc thành mây khói. Hóa ra thánh Phao Lô nói đúng: những điều ta thấy được có thể là ảo tưởng, nhưng có những điều không thấy được mà lại c̣n hoài. Trong lời cầu nguyện cho hôm nay, chúng ta xin một cuộc sống tự do sung măn. Ai mà chẳng muốn tự do? Ai lại không muốn đời sống vui mừng b́nh an? Nh́n quanh, chúng ta không thấy thiếu bao nhiêu lời mời gọi, hứa hẹn tự do và sung sướng tràn đầy. Sống trong xă hội loài người, ta hưởng các tiện nghi do tiến bộ mang lại, và tiến bộ có được do sự cạnh tranh để cải tiến. Tuy nhiên, câu hỏi vẫn là tại sao ta luôn ước mong một cuộc sống sung măn? Dường như là rất ít có người thỏa ḷng. Có ba điều ta chú trọng trong đời: thứ nhất là thành công; thứ hai: của cải; thứ ba, danh tiếng. Ta thường nghĩ rằng nếu có được ba điều đó th́ ḿnh có phước. Quả vậy, thành công đưa đến sự giàu có và làm ta được nhiều người ngưỡng mộ. Ḷng khao khát được ngưỡng mộ khiến người ta giành giựt lẫn nhau. Nhưng ta thấy rơ là ước mong của mọi người là có một cuộc đời b́nh an sung túc, và dường như bí quyết là ở chỗ ḿnh có thỏa ḷng với hiện tại và biết dừng lúc phải dừng. Thánh Phao Lô từng dạy: sự tin kính và sự thỏa ḷng là một điều lợi rất lớn. Tin Kính và Thỏa Ḷng không phải là điều tự nhiên ta có, mà do ơn Chúa. Ơn Chúa dẫn chúng ta đến sự thờ phượng, và do họp lại thờ phượng mà người ta học hỏi được hai điều trên. Trong Phúc Âm Mác mà chúng ta đọc hôm nay, có ba điều Đức Giêsu làm tại thành Ca-bê-na-um. Chúa chữa bệnh, Chúa đuổi quỉ, và Chúa giảng dạy. Ca-bê-na-um là một thành nhỏ ở phương bắc xứ Palestine, bờ phía tây của biển hồ Galilê. Ở đó có một bến nhỏ cho dân chài. Thành phố nầy được nhắc đến nhiều nhất trong Tân Ước. Đức Giêsu từ Na-xa-rét tới Ca-bê-na-um, và ở đó Ngài gọi những môn đệ đầu tiên: Andrew, Peter và hai người con trai của ông Xê-bê-đê. Ngài giảng Kinh Văn trong nhà hội người Do Thái, và ở trong nhà của Peter (Phierơ) một thời gian. Thuở đó, hễ ai có thể giảng được th́ đứng lên trong nhà hội mà giảng, và mọi người đều lắng nghe. Người ta nghe Đức Giêsu nói mà ngạc nhiên, v́ lời giảng của Ngài rất khác lạ. Truyện trong Phúc Âm thuật rằng khi Chúa rời khỏi Ca-bê-na-um th́ Ngài quở thành ấy, v́ dân thành đă khước từ Ngài. Mặc dầu Chúa đă đến bên họ, giảng lời khôn ngoan cho họ, bày tỏ quyền năng siêu nhiên cho họ thấy, chữa lành nhiều người và mang đến sự sáng cho tâm hồn tăm tối, họ vẫn không theo Ngài. Ḷng họ vẫn chỉ hướng về những điều thuộc về đời, y như phần đông con người chúng ta hôm nay. Không mấy ai chăm về những điều vĩnh cửu. Hôm nay, Chúa Nhật thứ năm trong Mùa Hiển Linh, chúng ta nhắc nhau về sự hiện diện của Chúa. Sự hiện diện ấy có thể đánh tan quyền lực của sự tối tăm, giải phóng chúng ta khỏi tội lỗi, và dạy chúng ta sự khôn ngoan để chúng ta tránh được những cạm bẫy nguy hiểm. Chính v́ sự nhắc nhở ấy mà chúng ta đến với nhau trong sự thờ phượng. Tác giả Thi Thiên 142 nói rằng: "Tôi cất tiếng cầu khẩn Đức Chúa; ở trước mặt Ngài tôi tuôn đổ sự than thở tôi -- I cry to the LORD with my voice; I pour out my complaint before him and tell him all my trouble." Khi tất cả những điều quư nhất trên đời tan biến, ta nắm lấy Chúa để cầu xin. Chúa là nguồn sức mạnh cho ta để qua được những khó khăn, ngay trong hoàn cảnh đen tối nhất. Nhờ trông đợi Chúa mà ta t́m được sự thỏa ḷng. Tiên Tri Êsai, trong Đoạn Kinh Thánh Thứ Nhất đọc hôm nay, nói rằng hễ ai phó thác đời ḿnh trông đợi nơi CHÚA th́ sẽ được sức mới, cất cánh bay cao như chim phượng hoàng: chạy mà không mệt nhọc, đi mà không ṃn mỏi. |
