About St. Patrick's Church
| Saint Patrick's was founded in 1953 as a mission church from the Falls Church. The congregation met for the first time on January 3, 1954 in the cafeteria of the Graham Road School. The building was completed in 1956. Members of St. Pat's have been known for their involvement in outreach ministries since the very early days of the parish. In 1995, Saint Patrick's became an Anglo-Vietnamese church, a mission of the Diocese of Virginia, and has become more and more multicultural. In January of 2012, Saint Patrick's full parish status was affirmed and recognized at the 217th Annual Council meeting of the Diocese. Some of us say that St. Pat's is like a window through which we can see God's love. Other parishioners suggest St. Pat's is a "safe haven" for all who seek peace, a quiet place for those who want to find rest. Many in the congregation mention caring is what makes St. Patrick's special to them. Our vision statement reflects what we are in our hearts: St. Patrick's Episcopal Church is a community of care called to be Christ-centered and multicultural in worship, Christian education and action to proclaim Christ's love to the world."

St. Pat's at the 217th Annual Diocesan Council

On Saturday, January 28, 2012, at the 217th Annual Diocesan Council Meeting, delegates from the 170 congregations of our Diocese voted to ratify Saint Patrick's full parish status. Immediately following the vote, the 890 strong Council sang the hymn "In Christ There Is No East Or West," and members of our church processed in with streamers and banner. Some of us wore Vietnamese and Sierra Leon costumes. Also included in the procession were Ed+ and Margaret Morgan, Jim+ and Kay Papile, Mary Staley+, Charles Brock+, Doan HuynhTucker, Elizabeth Kim, Seminarian Toua Vang, Christopher Miller (Young Priest Initiative Intern), Jorden Benjamin, Bennett Miller and Tess Miller. Tinh+ delivered a speech expressing St. Pat's thankfulness to God and gratitude to our Bishops, the other leaders and the people of the entire Diocese, for their guidance, love and support over the years. There was a long applause, and all of us shared the great joy at the event.  - Congratulations and Happy Birthday to our Katie Grossé, who is 102 today! - The Rt. Reverend David C. Jones, Bishop Suffragan of Virginia has retired. A leave taking Holy Eucharist was celebrated and a banquet to honor the Bishop was held at the Hyatt Regency Hotel on Friday, January 27th. - This year's Shrove Tuesday will be February 21st. Chief cook for the Shrove Tuesday Dinner will be Pauline Leonard. Pauline will need help in the kitchen. If you can help, please speak with Tinh+ or Tom Auld. - Interested in participating in mission trips to Haiti? The Diocese of Virginia has planned 2 mission trips to Haiti in 2012: (1) The Young Adult Trip, March 30 - April 6 (see www.thediocese.net/Ministries/Mission/Haiti/YoungAdult/); and (2) the Medical Mission, involving doctors, nurses and physician assistants of various specialties, May 5-12 (cost $1700; deadline for $500 deposit is January 31; contact kentduffey@doers.org). - Children's Choir Festival -- February 26th -- 7:00 PM.

The PYM Senior High Weekend will take place April 13-15 at Shrine Mont. More info to follow!  - The brochure of Camps and Events at Shrine Mont is now available in the narthex. Registration for summer camps began on January 4, 2012. Sign up by March 16, 2012 and save $20.00. Any family sending more than one youth to camp will receive a $25 discount off each child's tuition. You may register online, at camps.thediocese.net. A non-refundable deposit of $75.00 is required. Scholarship aid requests will begin to be reviewed on May 2, 2012. St. Pat's has received 5 copies of the brochure. Please pick up a copy if you are interested. Register your child early.

Tinh's Speech at Council

 We are here this morning to speak from our hearts our gratitude to all of you, the Bishops and the people of the Diocese of Virginia, for all the good things you have done for Saint Patrick's, and we give thanks to God for God's blessings upon us.
Established in the 1950's, St. Patrick's experienced great success for a number of years, and then the decline and turmoil of the early 1990's. In 1993, God sent the Rev. Dr. Ed Morgan to Saint Patrick's as Interim Rector. While there, Dr. Morgan reorganized the church and helped it to be ready for new challenges.
By the end of 1994, the Diocese challenged the parish to accept mission status and adopt its vision for Saint Patrick's as an "Anglo-Vietnamese" mission. The members of our church welcomed the idea, and we set out on a new journey.
God then sent the Reverend Jim Papile to St. Patrick's to serve as Vicar, and I became Jim's associate after my ordination to the priesthood. With his wisdom and creativity, Jim+ was bold in making changes happen. Jim+ said, "Let's read the Gospel in both languages on Sunday," and "Let's teach the 'Anglos' to say the dismissal in Vietnamese." And we did. Amazingly, the English speaking folks in the church welcomed the idea, and Saint Patrick's has continued the practice until today. A bilingual prayer book was completed for use in our worship. Vietnamese were welcomed to our church, to join the community and participate in all aspects of church life.
In 1999, Father Jim was called to serve as Rector of St. Anne's in Reston, and I was called to be Vicar of St. Patrick's. Since then, we have been blessed with the addition of families from Africa, and we have become a multicultural congregation. Visitors to our church for special events often come away saying that St. Patrick's potluck was the best in town.
With the assistance and guidance of our Bishops and the Commission on Congregational Missions, we continued to be faithful in worship, education and outreach. The church has become partner with a local elementary school in helping the needy school children and their families. Our church members are committed in the ministries that they take on, and are generous in giving. We continue to reach out in response to the needs of the larger community, proclaiming Christ's love in helping the poor and homeless. We have also been blessed having seminarians with us. Standing with us today are The Rev. Charles Brock and The Rev. Mary Staley. Charles+ spent 4 weeks at St. Patrick's one summer, when he was a seminarian, and Mary+ served as deacon at St. Patrick's prior to her ordination to priesthood. Now they are our cherished friends. Presently we have Seminarian Toua Vang and his family, from the Diocese of Minnesota. Toua is in his second year at VTS, and looking forward to serving God among the Hmong people in his home diocese and beyond. Christopher Miller, our Young Priest Initiative Intern, came to St. Patrick's recently, and we all like him very much.
We thank our Bishops for their love and guidance. Our special thanks are to Bishop Jones, who over the years cared for us and guided us. We thank the Chair and members of the Commission on Congregational Missions.
We remember the late Barbara Levy, of St. John's McLean, who wholeheartedly served as our CCM Liaison, offering guidance to us with love and wisdom. We appreciate Elizabeth Kim, of St. Francis', Great Falls, who succeeded Barbara in supporting us and has been so devoted in her role as CCM Liaison. Our thanks are also to the clergy and people of Region 8, whose support and friendship were so wonderful to us. We also thank Dr. Morgan and Rev. Jim Papile for their leadership to Saint Patrick's in the early years of its mission status.
Two weeks ago, at our Vestry Retreat we read from the story of Noah from the Book of Genesis, and we entertained some thoughts about ourselves: When the flood was over, and the bird that was sent out did not return, God told Noah to disembark. But Noah was a little reluctant, so God yelled at him, "Get out of the boat!"
Again, we wish to thank all of you, the entire Diocese of Virginia, for your support over the years, with financial aid, guidance and prayer, and for affirming the full parish status of Saint Patrick's Church today.

- Vào ngày thứ bảy tuần qua, 28 tháng 1, 2012, Đại Hội Thường Niên thứ 217 của Giáo Phận Virginia đă biểu quyết công nhận Nhà Thờ Thánh Patrick là một Hội Thánh tự trị tự lập. Biểu quyết nầy đă được thực hiện sau khi các ủy ban cứu xét đă chấp thuận thỉnh nguyện của nhà thờ chúng ta, sau ba năm không nhận trợ cấp của Giáo Phận. Lập tức theo sau quyết định nói trên, đại hội gồm 890 người đứng lên hát bản thánh ca "Trong Đức Kitô Không Phân Biệt Tây-Đông hay Nam-Bắc" (In Christ There Is No East or West), và đoàn người từ Saint Patrick's với cờ quạt tiến vào. Một số quư vị phụ nữ Việt Nam mặc áo dài, và quư tín hữu Phi Châu cu~ng mặc quốc phục của họ. Cuộc diễn hành cu~ng có sự góp mặt của quư Mục Sư Ed Morgan, Jim Papile, Mary Staley và Charles Brock. Ngoài ra cu~ng có quư bà Margaret Morgan, Kay Papile, Đoan Huỳnh Tucker, Elizabeth Kim, và Chủng Sinh Toua Vang cùng anh Christopher Miller (tập sự tại Saint Patrick's trong chương tŕnh chuẩn bị người trẻ vào chức vụ mục sư), cùng các em Jorden Benjamin, Bennett Miller và Tess Miller. Mục Sư Tỉnh đọc một diễn văn ngắn tạ ơn Chúa và cám ơn các quư vị Giám Mục cùng toàn thể Giáo Phận về t́nh thương, sự hướng dẫn và hỗ trợ trong những năm qua. Happy Birthday, Katie! - Giám Mục David C. Jones, một trong ba vị Giám Mục của Virginia đă về hưu, kể từ ngày chấm dứt Đại Hội Thường Niên vừa qua. Lễ Tiệc Thánh tạ ơn Chúa về mục vụ của Giám Mục Jones và bữa tiệc tiễn chân đă được tổ chức tại Khách Sạn Hyatt Regency, nơi Đại Hội nhóm họp, vào tối thứ sáu, 27 tháng 1, 2012. - Vào ngày Chúa Nhật, 12 tháng 2, các thiếu nhi sẽ tập hát sau lễ để chuẩn bị cho Đại Hội Các Ca Đoàn Thiếu Nhi, sau đó các em có thể tháp tùng các thiếu niên đi trượt băng ở Fairfax. Chi tiết sẽ được thông báo sau. - Năm nay, Tiệc Shrove Tuesday sẽ được tổ chức tại nhà thờ vào tối thứ ba, ngày 21 tháng 2, từ 5 giờ 30 chiều tới 7 giờ 30 tối. Đầu bếp là bà Pauline Leonard. Pauline sẽ cần nhiều người giúp trong bếp. Nếu quư vị có thể giúp bà, xin cho Mục Sư Tỉnh hoặc ông Tom Auld biết. Shrove Tuesday là một tập tục của nhà thờ họp lại ăn uống trước ngày Thứ Tư Lễ Tro, là ngày bắt đầu Mùa Thống Hối. - Thiếu nhi trong hội thánh sẽ tham dự Đại Hội Các Ca Đoàn Thiếu Nhi, tại nhà thờ Good Shepherd Lutheran Church ở Gaithersburg, Maryland, vào lúc 7 giờ tối, ngày Chúa Nhật, 26 tháng 2, 2012. Quư bà Mariko Hiller và Catherine Dubas sẽ hướng dẫn các em trong việc tập hát, và hôm ấy các em sẽ phải có mặt tại nhà thờ nói trên từ 1 giờ 30 chiều cho tới tối. - Bà Sheila Henderson, 79 tuổi, đă qua đời tại tư gia ở Sunrise/Bluemont, trong đêm rạng ngày thứ năm, 19 tháng 1. Hôm Chúa Nhật trước đó Bà vẫn c̣n đến thờ phượng tại nhà thờ. Sheila đến với Nhà Thờ Thánh Patrick cách đây khoảng 15 năm, do lời giới thiệu của người bạn thân là Bà Nancy Burch. Lúc mới đến, Bà dạy Anh Ngữ cho người Việt tại Nhà Thờ. Bà cu~ng gia nhập Ban Chấp Hành, và nhiệt tâm ủng hộ Chương Tŕnh Nhạc Thính Pḥng Odeon. Lễ tưởng niệm Sheila sẽ được tổ chức tại Nhà Thờ vào lúc 11 giờ sáng, ngày thứ bảy, 25 tháng 2. Trong di chúc, Bà đă soạn sẵn các đoạn Kinh Thánh và bản Thánh Ca cùng người đọc do bà yêu cầu. Bà Sheila muốn có nhạc chuông trong lễ, và nếu được th́ Nam-Trân Mai đọc Kinh Thánh. Bà không muốn chôn tro, song rải tro tại vùng núi Skyline, Virginia, theo địa điểm định sẵn trên bản đồ. Và bà nhấn mạnh là không có chuyện than khóc buồn rầu ("No mourning, no long faces allowed"). |

Đại Ư Kinh Văn Chúa Nhật Vừa Qua

Chúa Nhật Thứ Tư Trong Mùa Hiển Linh
Kinh Văn: Phục Truyền Luật Lệ Kư 18:15-20, Thi Thiên 111, Mác 1:21-18
Đoạn Kinh Thánh thứ nhất cho hôm nay được trích trong sách Phục Truyền Luật Lệ Kư của Kinh Cựu Ước. Tựa đề "Deuteronomy" của sách nầy có thể dịch là "Đệ Nhị Luật." Người Do Thái có một thời kỳ quên hẳn Đức Chúa Trời. Từ vua đến dân, họ thờ lạy tà thần và bỏ bê đền thờ của Chúa. Nhưng có một vị vua tên là Giô-si-a kính sợ Chúa. Giô-si-a lên ngôi lúc c̣n bé, đến khi trưởng thành, ông ra lệnh dọn dẹp chỉnh trang đền thờ của Chúa. Trong khi dọn dẹp đền thờ, người ta t́m được một cuộn da ghi các luật lệ của Chúa. Vua bèn kêu toàn dân tập họp để nghe Lời Chúa. Khi nghe, mọi người ăn năn hối lỗi. Cuộn da đó được gọi là "Đệ Nhị Luật."
Câu đầu tiên của đoạn kinh cựu ước nầy nói, "Từ giữa anh em ngươi, CHÚA là Đức Chúa Trời sẽ lập nên một đấng tiên tri như Ta." Đây là một câu Kinh Thánh mà người Do Thái cho là rất quan trọng. Cho đến ngày nay, người Do Thái vẫn c̣n trông đợi một đấng cứu thế, nhưng sự hy vọng ấy chỉ giới hạn cho dân tộc họ mà thôi: Vị cứu tinh ấy sẽ giải cứu và tái lập sự hưng thịnh của thời các vua Đavít và Solomon. Họ không hiểu được rằng Đức Giêsu chính là Đấng Cứu Thế mà họ hằng mong đợi, và rằng sự cứu rỗi của Chúa là cho tất cả mọi người, thuộc mọi sắc dân trên thế giới -- không phải chỉ để cho một nhóm người nở mày nở mặt, mà chính là ánh sáng soi trong cơi tối tăm, đánh đuổi điều ác và sự tăm tối.
Phúc Âm Mác có thể được coi là sách phúc âm được viết trước tiên hồi thế kỷ thứ nhất, vài chục năm sau Đức Giêsu. Các tín hữu thuở ấy chỉ biết Kinh Cựu Ước Do Thái là Kinh Thánh của ḿnh. Họ họp nhau hàng tuần để thờ phượng - đọc sách luật Do Thái, giải thích lời tiên tri, và ê a ngâm Thánh Vịnh; họ cu~ng dự Tiệc Thánh, và cu~ng nói câu "Chúa ở cùng anh chị em" trước khi cầu nguyện. Hồi đó, truyện tích về Đức Giêsu đều được truyền miệng, chứ không có kinh sách. Một tác giả vô danh đă viết sách phúc âm Mác mà chúng ta đọc hôm nay, sắp xếp một cách cô đọng truyện tích và lời dạy của Đức Giêsu mà ông gom được, và viết để cộng đoàn của ông am tường về Chúa. Măi về sau, khi Hội Thánh được tổ chức, các giáo phụ đoán rằng phúc âm nầy là của Mác, đồ đệ của Phierơ, và là người thanh niên đứng gần Đức Giêsu khi Ngài bị bắt: bị túm áo nhưng thoát được, trần trụi bỏ chạy. Các học giả không thể khẳng định Mác là tác giả, song tạm gọi cộng đoàn của tác giả là Hội Thánh Mác, là những độc giả đầu tiên của phúc âm này.
Hội Thánh Mác nghiệm ra rằng "Đấng Tiên Tri" được nói tới trong sách Đệ Nhị Luật chính là Đức Giêsu. Quyền năng của Chúa không những được bày tỏ trong lời giảng dạy mà c̣n trong sự đánh đuổi tà ma. Lời dạy của Chúa thật là mới mẻ, mới mẻ đến nỗi ngược đời. Lời Chúa có thẩm quyền trên muôn loài, ngay cả các thần ô uế cu~ng phải tuân lệnh. Sự sáng đă chiếu soi trong cơi tối tăm, và tối tăm phải thua sự sáng.
Hôm nay, Chúa Nhật thứ tư trong Mùa Hiển Linh, chúng ta học rằng v́ Chúa là sự sáng, có thẩm quyền trên cả vu~ trụ, chúng ta phải kính sợ Chúa. Chúng ta không thể chểnh mảng trong sự nhóm họp thờ phượng. Đời sống chúng ta có quá nhiều khó khăn làm cho nản ḷng thối chí. Song Lời Chúa có thể cảnh tỉnh và giúp chúng ta lấy lại tinh thần.
Thi Thiên 111, đoạn thi thiên mà chúng ta đọc hôm nay có một câu rất hay. Đó là câu 10: "Sự kính sợ Đức Giê Hô Va là khởi đầu sự khôn ngoan." Sự kính sợ Chúa có thể ǵn giữ chúng ta. Rất nhiều khi chúng ta muốn chọn con đường dễ đi -- con đường rộng răi, nhiều vui thú -- song nếu chúng ta thường đọc Lời Chúa và cầu nguyện th́ biết ḿnh phải chọn lối nào. Nhờ sự soi sáng của Chúa mà chúng ta tránh được sự vấp ngă. Ngă nhẹ th́ ít đau.
Trong Lời Cầu Nguyện hôm nay, chúng ta xin Chúa, là Đấng tể trị muôn loài, cho đời chúng ta được b́nh an. Chúa gọi chúng ta đi theo sự dẫn dắt của Chúa trên con đường sáng. Chính Chúa là Đức Chúa Trời đă đến trong thế gian, và hiện nay đang ở rất gần với chúng ta. Nhưng Chúa không thể làm ǵ cho chúng ta nếu chúng ta không chọn đặt Chúa ở trung tâm của cuộc đời ḿnh.
