About St. Patrick's Church
| Saint Patrick's was founded in 1953 as a mission church from the Falls Church. The congregation met for the first time on January 3, 1954 in the cafeteria of the Graham Road School. The building was completed in 1956. Members of St. Pat's have been known for their involvement in outreach ministries since the very early days of the parish. In 1995, Saint Patrick's became an Anglo-Vietnamese church, and has become more and more multicultural. Some of us say that St. Pat's is like a window through which we can see God's love. Other parishioners suggest St. Pat's is a "safe haven" for all who seek peace, a quiet place for those who want to find rest. Many in the congregation mention caring is what makes St. Patrick's special to them. Our vision statement reflects what we are in our hearts: St. Patrick's Episcopal Church is a community of care called to be Christ-centered and multicultural in worship, Christian education and action to proclaim Christ's love to the world."

Happy New Year!!
- I am pleased to announce that Mr. Christopher Miller, who is discerning a possible call to priesthood, has come to work with me as an intern at St. Patrick's. Under the auspices of the Diocesan Commission on Ministry, which runs the Young Priest Initiative Program, Christopher will participate in all aspects of church life during the three months he is with us. Please welcome Christopher when you see him at church. Tinh+
- Your prayers are requested for our Sheila Henderson, 77, who passed away during the nighttime between January 18th and 19th, in her home at Sunrise/Bluemont. We saw Sheila at church this last Sunday. We will miss her. Her brother Bill Henderson and his wife Betty is living in Indiana. A memorial service for Sheila is being planned, and the date and time of the service will be announced.
- On Sunday, January 22nd, we will celebrate Tết -- The Year of the Dragon -- with the annual potluck and talent show. The event will be held after church. Please bring food if you can. If you are interested in performing in the talent show, please contact our Music Director, Mariko Hiller, at marikohiller@gmail.com
- Children from Uganda will perform traditional African music and dance at Saint Patrick's on Friday, January 27, 2012, at 7:30 PM. This will be a fundraiser. The purpose of the event is to raise awareness of HIV/AIDS, and to advocate for international assistance to end its devastating effects on children in the world. All are invited to attend.
- All are invited to participate in the presentation of St.Patrick's at the Diocesan 217th Annual Council this Saturday, January 28th, at Hyatt Regency Hotel, 1800 Presidents Street, Reston, Virginia, USA 20190. The report of the Committee on Church Status will be presented at about 10:00 AM, and St. Patrick's will then process in. We plan to gather at the hotel by 9:30 AM. Those who car pool from the church will leave St. Patrick's at 8:30 AM.
- A meeting to plan for our Sunday School Program for this winter and spring will be held after church on Sunday, January 29th. All parents and Sunday School teachers are invited to participate in the meeting.
- Have you remembered to turn in your pledge card? Many thanks to all who have already pledged for the coming year.
- Dr. Nancy Briggs, daughter of the late Howard and Helen Arni, will speak at St. Patrick's after church on Sunday, March 4th, on her recent mission trip to Haiti. Nancy's presentation will be part of our Lenten series. Other speakers included in the series are Toua Vang, Julie Tran and Tinh Huynh+. - Interested in participating in mission trips to Haiti? The Diocese of Virginia has planned 2 mission trips to Haiti in 2012: (1) The Young Adult Trip, March 30 - April 6 (see www.thediocese.net/Ministries/Mission/Haiti/YoungAdult/); and (2) the Medical Mission, involving doctors, nurses and physician assistants of various specialties, May 5-12 (cost $1700; deadline for $500 deposit is January 31; contact kentduffey@doers.org).  - The Forward Day By Day for February, March and April 2012 has arrived. Copies of this material for daily devotion are now available in the narthex. Please pick up your copy.

At the 217th Annual Council of the Episcopal Diocese of Virginia later this month, the Rt. Rev. David C. Jones, bishop suffragan of our diocese for 17 years, will retire. To honor his ministry, the Diocese has established the Bishop David C. Jones Evangelism Fund to provide support to small congregations seeking to implement new initiatives in their parishes or communities. The intent of the grants awarded through the Fund is to help smaller congregations fuel creative ideas and programs that will promote new growth and foster evangelism.
Contributions to this fund will help support fellow churches while recognizing the ministry of Bishop Jones. We invite you to contribute, either online or by submitting a check via mail (made out to the Diocese of Virginia with "Bishop Jones Evangelism Fund" in the memo line).

Second Sunday After The Epiphany Text: 1 Samuel 3:1-10; Psalm 139:1-5,12-17; John 1:43-51 ____________
In the Old Testament reading of today, God calls little Samuel three times in the night. The young boy served in the Temple as an "intern" under the elderly priest, Eli. This night, as he was asleep, Samuel heard someone calling him by name, and he thought it was Eli. Yet Eli did not call him. After the call came to Samuel for the third time, Eli realized that it was God, and he taught the boy how to respond. Then God called again, and Samuel said, "Speak, LORD, for your servant is listening." Last week, my nephew in Vietnam sent me an email with a class picture of those graduating from the Danang "Bible School" in the late 1920's. Among the eleven "apostles" in the picture were my father and Kim-Anh's grandfather. They were among the earliest converts who became leaders in the Protestant church in Vietnam. Wearing the traditional Vietnamese costumes, with Western-style white pants and white shoes, they flanked Rev. John D. Olsen, the missionary. It looks like they all were trying not to smile. In a society where outward piety matters, the new pastors/evangelists were expected to appear serious. Nevertheless, they esteemed their calls, and they knew of the demand to accept vulnerability and powerlessness, and to live in modesty. The Hymn "Here I am, Lord," which we will sing during Communion, reflects the response of Isaiah when he heard God's call in the Temple. The story is in the Book of Isaiah, Chapter 6. "Here I am, Lord. Is it I, Lord? I have heard you calling in the night. I will go, Lord, if you lead me, I will hold your people in my heart." The tune is beautiful, and the lyrics touching. Yet as we sing the song we may ask, "Is this really my call?" Is God's call only for those going out as prophets, evangelists, pastors, or for the "heroes of faith" -- spectacular, relevant and immensely successful -- who would rescue the multitude from the eternal fire? Some ten years ago, I met with a couple who prepared for their wedding, and they were surprised when I mentioned "call" in marriage -- a call to carry the cross. The notion of some other "calls" may likewise stimulate our thoughts: the call of parents, the call of workers, teachers, and so on. You can be a missionary right where you are. What about being a missionary to your spouse, your children, your co-workers or your friends? God's call can be discerned practically in every situation, everywhere and in various ways of life, for those who listen and are willing to obey. Sometimes God's call can become apparent and be affirmed in conversation with trusted friends. Sometimes the call comes with simple and yet very challenging demands.
Mary Geegh, an American missionary to India for 40 years, had an interesting way to listen to God's voice. She sought God's will in every situation of her life. She would spend time in silence, and then jot down the thoughts that came. One day, while in India, Mary was in turmoil thinking about a bitter conflict she had with another female missionary. Finding herself imprisoned by anger, she resorted to silence and discernment. As she started writing in her journal, a line from her pen read, "Go to your friend and apologize to her, and bring along an egg." Mary Geegh obeyed. She took action accordingly and reconciled with her friend. In those days, and in a land of poverty, the egg was a wonderful gift for the entire family of the friend to share.
Perhaps the call that Mary discerned and followed was one of the most difficult calls: it was the call to renounce self-centeredness. This is God's call for everyone, clergy or laity, and it may take a lot of training and determination to follow -- a life-time effort.

- Nhà Thờ chúng ta sẽ ăn Tết vào ngày Chúa Nhật, 22 tháng 1, 2012. Sau lễ thờ phượng sẽ có bữa ăn potluck và một chương trình văn nghệ do chính các thành viên Nhà Thờ Thánh Patrick trình diễn. Nếu quý anh chị em muốn tham dự văn nghệ, xin liên lạc với Bà Mariko Hiller, nhạc sĩ của nhà thờ. Xin mang thức ăn đến nhà thờ để chia xẻ với mọi người.
- Kính mời tất cả quý anh chị em tham dự buổi ra mắt nhà thờ chúng ta tại đại hội Giáo Phận Virginia, trong dịp Nhà Thờ Thánh Patrick được công nhận là một Hội Thánh độc lập, tại Khách Sạn Hyatt Regency, Reston, Virginia, vào ngày thứ bảy tuần tới, 28 tháng 1, 2012, lúc 10 giờ sáng. Quý vị đi xe chung sẽ khởi hành từ nhà thờ lúc 8 giờ 30 sáng. Địa chỉ của khách sạn là 1800 Presidents Street, Reston, Virginia, 20190.
- Các em cô nhi Phi Châu, thuộc xứ nghèo Uganda sẽ trình diễn một chương trình gây quỹ vào tối thứ sáu, ngày 27 tháng 1, 2012 tại Nhà Thờ Thánh Patrick. Mục đích của buổi trình diễn nhạc Phi Châu là để mọi người để ý đến hậu quả của bệnh AIDS trên các thiếu nhi thuộc các miền nghèo khổ trên thế giới, và kêu gọi sự giúp đỡ của mọi người thuộc mọi quốc gia trên thế giới.
- Anh Christopher Miller, 25 tuổi, là một thanh niên có ước nguyện bước vào chức vụ mục sư trong Nhà Thờ Episcopal. Tốt nghiệp Trường St. Stephen's & St. Agnes năm 2005, và Đại Học Harvard, 2010, Christopher được giáo phận gởi đến tập sự với Mục Sư Tỉnh trong ba tháng. Tại Nhà Thờ Thánh Patrick, Christopher sẽ tham dự vào tất cả các sinh hoạt của cộng đoàn, kể cả việc theo Mục Sư Tỉnh thăm viếng các tín hữu. Xin quý anh chị em hoan nghênh Christopher khi gặp tại nhà thờ.
- Tin Buồn. Bà Sheila Henderson, 77 tuổi, đã qua đời một cách an bình tại tư gia ở Sunrise/Bluemont, trong đêm rạng ngày hôm nay, thứ năm, 19 tháng 1. Hôm Chúa Nhật vừa qua Bà vẫn còn đến thờ phượng tại nhà thờ. Sheila đến với Nhà Thờ Thánh Patrick cách đây khoảng 15 năm, do lời giới thiệu của người bạn thân là Bà Nancy Burch. Lúc mới đến, Bà dạy Anh Ngữ cho các thành viên Việt Nam tại Nhà Thờ Thánh Patrick. Bà cu~ng gia nhập Ban Chấp Hành, và nhiệt tâm ủng hộ Chương Trình Nhạc Thính Phòng Odeon của Nhà Thờ. Lễ an táng cho Sheila Henderson sẽ được cử hành vào một ngày sẽ được thông báo sau.
- Kính mời quý phụ huynh và các quý vị hướng dẫn lớp Trường Chúa Nhật cho các thiếu nhi họp sau lễ ngày Chúa Nhật, 29 tháng 1, để bàn chương trình sinh hoạt cho các em.
- Nếu quý vị chưa điền phiếu hứa dâng cho năm 2012, xin điền và gởi về cho Nhà Thờ, hoặc đặt phiếu vào dĩa tiền dâng trong lễ thờ phượng. Quý vị có thể chỉ để tên và địa chỉ, nếu không muốn ghi rõ số tiền dâng cho năm, và ông Bob Cascella, phụ tá Thủ Quỹ sẽ thiết lập tập phong bì dâng hiến cho quý vị.
- Bà Nancy Briggs, con của các cụ Howard và Helen Arni (đã qua đời), sẽ thuyết trình về chuyến công tác thiện nguyện của Bà ở Haiti, sau lễ ngày Chúa Nhật, 4 tháng 3, tại nhà thờ chúng ta. Chuyến đi Bà đã tham dự nhằm giúp người nghèo ở Haiti sau trận động đất khủng khiếp năm qua. Buổi thuyết trình sẽ là một trong các sinh hoạt vào Mùa Thống Hối năm 2012.

Bài Giảng Chúa Nhật Vừa Qua

Chúa Nhật Thứ Nhì của Mùa Hiển Linh Kinh Văn: 1 Samuel 3:1-10; Thi Thiên 139:1-5, 12-17; Giăng 1:43-51 Trong đoạn Kinh Thánh Cựu Ước chúng ta đọc hôm nay, Chúa đánh thức cậu bé Sa-mu-ên ba lần trong đêm. Lúc hãy còn thơ ấu, Sa-mu-ên được dâng cho Chúa để phục vụ trong đền thờ, dưới sự sai bảo của thầy tế lễ Ê-li già nua. Đêm nay, trong khi say ngủ có tiếng ai gọi tên Sa-mu-ên, đánh thức cậu bé ba lần. Sa-mu-ên chạy tới hỏi Ê-li, song Ê-li chẳng có gọi, và bảo cậu trở về chỗ ngủ. Đến lần thứ ba, Ê-li biết rằng đó là Chúa đã đánh thức Sa-mu-ên, bèn dạy cách trả lời. Sau đó, Chúa đến gọi Sa-mu-ên lần nữa, và Sa-mu-ên thưa: "Lạy Chúa, xin hãy phán, kẻ tôi tớ Ngài đang nghe." Tuần trước người cháu của tôi ở Việt Nam gởi email qua cho tôi một bức ảnh chụp quý vị tốt nghiệp Trường Kinh Thánh Tin Lành Đà Nẵng vào cuối thập niên 1920, trong đó có ba tôi và ông nội của Kim-Anh. Họ là những người tin Chúa của thời xa xưa và trở nên các vị lãnh đạo tiền phong của Hội Thánh Tin Lành Việt Nam. Trong hình, họ mặc quốc phục pha với quần tây trắng và giày trắng; ngồi chính giữa là giáo sĩ đốc học John D. Olsen. Không một vị nào cười. Trong một xã hội trọng về tác phong, họ phải tỏ ra nghiêm túc, và thật vậy, họ quý trọng sự kêu gọi vào thiên chức, đòi hỏi chấp nhận thế mỏng manh, luôn nhường nhịn và sống đời đơn giản, nếu không nói là nghèo về vật chất. Hôm nay, trong giờ Tiệc Thánh chúng ta sẽ hát bài "Lạy Chúa, có con đây." Bài hát nầy dựa theo truyện tích Chúa gọi tiên tri Êsai trong Đền Thờ. Truyện tích ấy ở trong Sách Ê-sai đoạn 6. Lời ca dịch như sau: "Lạy Chúa, có con đây. Có phải Chúa gọi con không? Con đã nghe tiếng Chúa trong đêm. Lạy Chúa, con sẽ đi, nếu Chúa dắt con. Con sẽ hết lòng yêu mến dân Ngài (hoặc: Con sẽ ấp ủ dân Chúa trong lòng con)" Điệu nhạc rất du dương, và lời ca thật thấm. Song khi hát, có lẽ quý vị và tôi tự hỏi: "Đây có thật sự là tiếng gọi của Chúa cho mình chăng?" Phải chăng tiếng gọi của Chúa lúc nào cu~ng là kêu mình đi "hầu việc Chúa," để trở thành mục sư, giáo sĩ, hoặc thành các "anh hùng đức tin" - được hết sức trọng vọng, yêu mến và thành công vĩ đại - để cứu vớt muôn linh hồn thoát chốn hỏa ngục? Khoảng mười năm trước đây tôi họp với một cặp hôn nhân chuẩn bị cho đám cưới. Họ đã ngạc nhiên khi tôi đề cập tới "tiếng gọi" trong hôn nhân - tiếng gọi vác thánh giá. Chúng ta có thể nghĩ đến một số tiếng gọi khác, theo tinh thần của đức tin của chúng ta: tiếng gọi của người làm cha mẹ, tiếng gọi của người làm công nhân, giáo chức, vân vân. Quý vị có thể làm giáo sĩ ngay tại chỗ của mình. Phải chăng cha mẹ cu~ng được Chúa gọi làm "giáo sĩ" cho con của mình? (Hướng dẫn, cung cấp, bạn thiết cho con) Phải chăng Chúa gọi mình làm "giáo sĩ"cho người phối ngẫu, hay là các bạn đồng sở? Nếu chúng ta lắng nghe thì sẽ cảm nhận tiếng gọi của Chúa trong tất cả các hoàn cảnh và môi trường mình sống, và trong nhiều cách khác nhau. Có khi ý Chúa được bầy tỏ qua các bạn hữu mà mình tin cậy. Có khi tiếng gọi nhỏ lại là thách thức lớn. Bà Mary Geegh, một giáo sĩ người Mỹ phục vụ tại Ấn Độ 40 năm, có một cách khá đặc biệt để nghe tiếng Chúa phán cho mình. Bà tìm ý Chúa trong mọi việc, bằng cách để thì giờ lâu ngồi yên. Sau đó bà viết nhật ký và ghi lại các tư tưởng đến với mình lúc ấy. Một hôm, tâm tư bà bị dằn vặt vì một mối bất đồng với một bà giáo sĩ khác. Hai bà giận nhau. Cảm biết mình bị nỗi giận giam hãm, Mary tìm đến sự yên lặng và ý Chúa. Khi bắt đầu viết nhật ký, tự tay bà viết ra câu: "Phải đi xin lỗi người bạn, và mang theo một quả trứng gà." Mary Geegh vâng theo tiếng ấy. Bà đã thi hành và đến làm hòa với bạn mình. Thời ấy, ở xứ nghèo nàn kia, quả trứng gà đã thành một bữa ăn bổ dưỡng cho gia đình bà bạn -- món quà ấy thật là quý cho họ, và có thể là Mary đã mang theo một vật đắt giá thời ấy để tạ lỗi. Có lẽ tiếng gọi mà Mary đã nhận ra và làm theo là khó nhất cho người theo Chúa: đó là tiếng gọi từ bỏ "cái tôi." Đây là tiếng gọi của Chúa cho tất cả mọi người. Nó là tiếng gọi căn bản hơn hết, làm nền tảng cho tất cả mọi tiếng gọi khác. Từ bỏ "cái tôi" là một việc mà người nghe tiếng Chúa phải tập và quyết định làm theo -- một cố gắng suốt đời. "Lạy Chúa, xin hãy phán, kẻ tôi tớ Ngài đang nghe."
