About St. Patrick's Church
| Saint Patrick's was founded in 1953 as a mission church from the Falls Church. The congregation met for the first time on January 3, 1954 in the cafeteria of the Graham Road School. The building was completed in 1956. Members of St. Pat's have been known for their involvement in outreach ministries since the very early days of the parish. In 1995, Saint Patrick's became an Anglo-Vietnamese church, and has become more and more multicultural. Some of us say that St. Pat's is like a window through which we can see God's love. Other parishioners suggest St. Pat's is a "safe haven" for all who seek peace, a quiet place for those who want to find rest. Many in the congregation mention caring is what makes St. Patrick's special to them. Our vision statement reflects what we are in our hearts: St. Patrick's Episcopal Church is a community of care called to be Christ-centered and multicultural in worship, Christian education and action to proclaim Christ's love to the world."

- Mark Your Calendar. The end of January 2012 will be full of events for our church. First, on the evening of Friday, January 27th, Children of Uganda will perform at St. Patrick's. Second, the congregation of Saint Patrick's is expected to be at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Reston, VA, on the morning of Saturday, January 28, the last day of the 217th Diocesan Annual Council, to claim its parish status. The Church needs your help: 1. food for Friday's post-concert reception, and 2. drivers for Saturday's transportation to the Council. Sign-up sheets for both events will be posted in the narthex after Christmas. All are invited to participate in these wonderful happenings. Note: Tinh+ has been invited to lead a panel discussion at the 217th annual Diocesan Council on multicultural ministry in the Episcopal Church. The workshop will take place on the afternoon of Friday, January 27th. Father Jim Papile, Rector of St. Anne's/Reston and former Vicar of St. Patrick's, our Kathy Oliver, and two clergy of the Diocese will participate as panelists. - Help Victims of the Typhoon in the Philippines. About 1000 people died in the Southern Philippines when a flash flood ravaged their homes at night. The Philippines Independent Church (IFI), which is in full Communion with the Episcopal Church, has sent out a letter asking for prayers and support for the many of its members who were affected by this horrible disaster. In his letter, Bishop Joselito T. Cruz, General Secretary of the IFI wrote, "Hardest hit were the cities of Cagayan de Oro and Iligan, and some parts of Visayas, with chilling reports of tens of thousands left homeless, and hundreds of deaths and missing people. Homes were swept away by heavy floods and mud flow, even as their inhabitants were sleeping peacefully. Churches have been opened as evacuation centers in the affected areas. But we humbly admit that we do not have enough resources for a crisis of this magnitude. In this urgent situation, we appeal for whatever assistance you can share in order to alleviate the suffering of so many people." To help the victims of the typhoon in the Philippines, please send your contribution to Episcopal Relief and Development, 815 Second Avenue, New York, NY 10017, earmarked "Philippine Typhoon Sendong Relief." - An invitation to children, young people and adults in the church to speak with Father Tinh about any questions concerning the call to ordained ministry, at any time and by any means -- talk, phone, or email. - Have you remembered to turn in your pledge card? Please remember that every pledge counts, and they are a representation of your commitment to the parish and to our ministry. Many thanks to all who have already pledged for the coming year.
- If you or a loved one, by reason of illness or frailty, cannot attend church this Christmas, please let Fr. Tinh know if you would like him to bring Eucharist to you. - Many thanks to those who stayed after worship last Sunday to green the church. Special thanks to Ann Nelson and Kathy Oliver, who brought in the greens from a local nursery; and many thanks to those who cooked. The volunteers spent more than two hours working on the wreaths and hanging the Christmas stars. It was an enjoyable event here at St. Patrick's! - Christmas Eve. On Christmas Eve there will be a service at 6:30 PM in the Chapel for children, Christmas Prelude Music at 7:00 PM, and Holy Eucharist at 7:30 PM. Please come worship with us, and please invite your family and friends.
- New Year's Day Celebration. On Sunday, January 1st, 2012, we will celebrate the New Year. Instead of holding our celebration at the Rectory, as we have done over previous years, this time we will hold it in church with a potluck after the 10:30 AM service. Please bring food if you can. All are invited to stay for the celebration.
- Vestry Retreat. The 2012 Vestry Retreat will be held at Immanuel Church-on-the-Hill, in Alexandria, on Saturday, January 14th, from 9 AM to 3 PM (snow date: January 21st).
 - Many thanks to all of you for your generous Angel Tree gifts to the needy families of Westlawn Elementary School. On Tuesday, December 20th, our Winnie Lebo took 15 bags of presents over to Westlawn for our nine families. Hopefully, this will make their Christmas a bit brighter and more blessed.
- The Christmas cards from St. Pat's have reached the orphans of Abba Home in Pakistan. Our Sunday School class took two Sundays creating the Christmas cards. Many thanks to Cate Johnson and Catherine Dubas for their ideas, commitment, and leadership. This new ministry is a blessing we share with the faithful who live in a land that is still hostile to Christianity. Below are the photos showing the girls with their cards. Catherine wrote, "I'm amazed and humbled to see our work now half way across the world, in the hands of these wonderful children!" Thank you for your caring and love for our sisters in Christ.

- Children from Uganda will perform traditional African music and dance at Saint Patrick's on Friday, January 27, 2012, at 7:30 PM. This will be a fundraiser. The purpose of the event is to raise awareness of the effects of HIV/AIDS on children in developing nations around the world, and to advocate for international assistance to end the devastating effects of the disease on children. More information on this performance will come later.

- On December 8th, 2011, the Executive Board of the Diocese of Virginia voted unanimously to endorse Saint Patrick's for full parish status. The Board's decision is expected to be ratified at the 217th Annual Council of the Diocese, which will be held at the Hyatt Regency Hotel, Reston, Virginia, on January 26-28, 2012. After 16 years of being a mission, Saint Patrick's is looking forward to being a full-fledged parish again. Thanks be to God! Saint Patrick's is expected to march in with banners at the Council meeting on the morning of Saturday, January 28th, and all of our members and friends are invited to join us. To facilitate transportation to and from the event of that day, a sign-up sheet will be posted in the narthex for those planning to participate in the celebration, and for those volunteering to drive.

- Hội Thánh cám ơn tất cả các quý vị đã tặng quà Angel Tree cho các gia đình nghèo của Trường Tiểu Học Westlawn. Hôm thứ ba vừa qua, ngày 20 tháng 12, bà Winnie Lebo đã mang 15 gói quà đến trường Westlawn để tặng cho chín gia đình. - Các món quà và thiệp giáng sinh gởi đã đến tay các em gái cô nhi ở viện Abba Home ở Pakistan. Các thiếu nhi Nhà Thờ Thánh Patrick đã vẽ những thiệp ấy. Hội Thánh cám ơn các bà Cate Johnson và Catherine Dubas về sáng kiến và sự tận tâm, khiến mục vụ mới nầy thành một phước hạnh cho nhà thờ chúng ta và cô nhi viện tại Pakistan, là nơi các cô nhi và tín hữu sống giữa một xã hội có ác cảm với Thiên Chúa Giáo. Sau 16 năm là một "giáo đoàn" (mission), tùy thuộc sự hỗ trợ tài chính của Giáo Phận Virginia, nhà thờ chúng ta đã có đủ khả năng tự lập, và kể từ cuối tháng 1, 2012, nhà thờ sẽ trở thành một "giáo xứ" (parish). Đại Ý Kinh Văn Chúa Nhật Vừa Qua

2 Samuel 7:1-11, 16; Lu-ca 1:26-38
Trong Đoạn Kinh Thánh thứ nhất, vua Đa Vít ước mong xây một đền thờ cho Chúa; Chúa phán rằng chính Ngài sẽ "dựng nhà" cho ông. Ngài sẽ ban cho người Do Thái một chỗ an trú, để họ không còn bị áp bức và không còn run sợ, và triều đại Đa Vít sẽ vững lập đời đời.
Triều đại Đa Vít và Sô Lô Môn, là thời thịnh vượng của người Do Thái. Các vị vua kế tiếp cai trị Giêrusalem làm điều ác trước mặt Chúa, nên quốc gia của họ suy sụp, bị ngoại bang ức chế, và họ bị tan lạc lưu vong. Sau 1945, người Do Thái trở về lập quốc. Lá cờ họ màu trắng, với ngôi sao sáu cạnh màu xanh nước biển -- tức là ngôi sao Đa Vít. Người Do Thái tin chắc lời hứa của Chúa trong câu: "Ta sẽ cho vương quốc của con tồn tại mãi mãi."
Vua Đa Vít và người Do Thái có liên hệ gì đến niềm tin của chúng ta?
Các tín hữu thời xưa nghiệm ra rằng chính Đức Giêsu là vị vua tái lập triều đại Đa Vít. Phần đông tín hữu tại Giêrusalem vào thế kỷ thứ nhất là người Do Thái. Họ ôn lại chuyện về cuộc đời Đức Giêsu; họ nghiền ngẫm Kinh Văn, và họ khẳng định rằng những lời tiên tri Cựu Ước đều nói về Đấng Kitô mà họ hằng trông đợi. Họ nghiên cứu gia phả của Giô Sép và Mari, và tìm ra rằng Đức Giêsu cu~ng có họ hàng với Đa Vít. Về mặt thiêng liêng, tất cả những ai tin nhận Đức Giêsu Kitô đều là dân Do Thái Mới.
Trong Phúc-Âm Lu-Ca, thiên sứ của Chúa đến gặp Mari và cho cô biết cô sẽ thụ thai bởi Thánh Linh, và sẽ sinh một bé trai. Điều nầy làm cho cô bé 14 tuổi sợ hãi. Trong xã hội thời ấy, không chồng mà có mang là bị đem ra ném đá cho chết. Nhưng thiên sứ nói: không có việc chi mà Thiên Chúa không làm được. Đó là một câu đáng nhớ. Đáng nhớ hơn nữa là thái độ của Mari: "Tôi đây là tôi tớ Chúa, xin sự ấy xảy ra cho tôi như lời người truyền." Trong sự chờ đợi Chúa, chúng ta có thể nói như Mari đã nói chăng, khi ta đối diện với hoàn cảnh của riêng mình?.
Trong sự chuẩn bị đón Chúa trở lại, chúng ta có chấp nhận hoàn cảnh của mình, vì tin rằng mọi sự hiệp lại làm ích cho những ai tin cậy Chúa?
