The Vision of St. Patrick's

Saint Patrick's Episcopal Church is a community of care, called to be Christ-centered and multicultural in worship, Christian education and action to proclaim Christ's love to the world.

About St. Patrick's Church

Saint Patrick's was founded in 1953 as a mission church from the Falls Church.  The congregation met for the first time on January 3, 1954 in the cafeteria of the Graham Road School.  The building was completed in 1956.  Members of St. Pat's have been known for their involvement in outreach ministries since the very early days of the parish.  In 1995, Saint Patrick's became an Anglo-Vietnamese church, and has become more and more multicultural.  Some of us say that St. Pat's is like a window through which we can see God's love.  Other parishioners suggest St. Pat's is a "safe haven" for all who seek peace, a quiet place for those who want to find rest.  Many in the congregation mention caring is what makes St. Patrick's special to them.  Our vision statement reflects what we are in our hearts:  St. Patrick's Episcopal Church is a community of care called to be Christ-centered and multicultural in worship, Christian education and action to proclaim Christ's love to the world."

Letter from Pakistan

Greetings, Dear Friends!

Sunset in Islamabad.  Pale golden light filters through the woodsmoke that hangs thick in the air.  The weather has thankfully cooled, but brought a chill in the evenings and early mornings.  Many heat their homes and cook their food with wood and charcoal.
Cate and friends       The mosques have sung their call to prayer, and people begin to settle in for the night.  Today is Ashura, the tenth day of the holy month of Muharram, and the day when the Prophet Mohammed's grandson and his entire family was slaughtered on the banks of the Euphrates. Check out these links in Wikipedia for a description:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Muharram;  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Day_of_Ashura.
Muslims observe this day of mourning with major processions.  Some flail their backs in self-mortification rites.  My Pakistani friends explain that the day provides the opportunity for personal reflection.
Both today and tomorrow are official holidays.  All shops are closed.  We've been told to be on constant alert following the NATO airstrikes of November 26.  This tragic event, coupled with Ashura, may lead to violence and repercussions for Westerners.  I've chosen to stay close to home during these days.  It's been a welcome break from the hectic pace that we usually keep!
It's a difficult time for our Pakistani friends who are trying to make a difference in their country.  USAID is funding a major program to address violence against women throughout the country.  It's a wonderful effort, with several courageous women and men standing up to traditional values and seeking peaceful change.  Their very lives are threatened-simply because they refuse to accept a status quo that allows family members to permanently scar women with acid, bury them alive, gang rape them with impunity, or murder them in "honor killings."  During these days, these courageous colleagues have received veiled threats for their safety and security.  Yet they continue with their work.  They are the brave ones for whom we need to pray, and whom we must support.  I admire their sacrifice.
The sunset now shines red in the twilight.  The evening star rises, and crescent moon guides our path as we walk to a neighbor's house.  Fitting lighting for the end of this day!  I send each of you from our St. Pat's family warm greetings for the holiday.  May we continue to pray for peace to come to us in the New Year!
         Blessings,
        ~Cate

An Evening Prayer

O Gracious Light,

pure brightness of the everliving Father in heaven,

O Jesus Christ, holy and blessed!

Now as we come to the setting of the sun,

and our eyes behold the vesper light,

we sing your praises O God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

You are worthy at all times to be praised by happy voices,

O Son of God, O Giver of life,

and to be glorified through all the worlds.

(Book of Common Prayer, Page 139)

Let us pray for Cate Johnson, Garway Thomas, and all US personnel serving overseas, and for their families.

Blue Christmas Service, Wednesday, December 21st

Blue Christmas Service, Wednesday, December 21st, 7:30 PM.  If you or someone you know finds Christmas a difficult time, St. Patrick's invites you to attend this service. It is a time to join together to listen to prayers and scripture that acknowledge God's presence, even in times when we mourn and/or experience struggle.

Angel Tree - Christmas gifts to Westlawn Needy Families

Christmas TreeAngel Tree.  This December 7 or 8, we will be receiving information from the guidance counselors at Westlawn regarding families selected as needing special attention this Christmas season.  We plan to have angels to choose on Sunday, December 11.  Since there will only be two Sundays, December 11 and December 18, before Christmas, we will have to be moving fast.  More information on the families selected will be available on December 11.
So plan to pick your "angels" and help us to provide Christmas for some of our more needy neighbors.

Christmas Flowers

Poinsettia-   Christmas Flowers. You are invited to offer flowers at Christmas, in thanksgiving for God's blessings or in memory of your loved ones.  Please send $10.00 to the church with a note stating your name, the names of those remembered, and/or the blessings to be mentioned. Đại Kinh Văn Cha Nhật Vừa Qua

Cha Nhật Thứ Hai của Ma Trng Đợi
Mc 13:24-37

C rất nhiều điều chung quanh ta, m điều no cu~ng ku ro v ni, "Ti mới l khẩn trương.'"

C nỗi on hận no khng?

May God bless and keep you, and may God grant us peace.
