About St. Patrick's Church
| Saint Patrick's was founded in 1953 as a mission church from the Falls Church. The congregation met for the first time on January 3, 1954 in the cafeteria of the Graham Road School. The building was completed in 1956. Members of St. Pat's have been known for their involvement in outreach ministries since the very early days of the parish. In 1995, Saint Patrick's became an Anglo-Vietnamese church, and has become more and more multicultural. Some of us say that St. Pat's is like a window through which we can see God's love. Other parishioners suggest St. Pat's is a "safe haven" for all who seek peace, a quiet place for those who want to find rest. Many in the congregation mention caring is what makes St. Patrick's special to them. Our vision statement reflects what we are in our hearts: St. Patrick's Episcopal Church is a community of care called to be Christ-centered and multicultural in worship, Christian education and action to proclaim Christ's love to the world."

 Those who attended the Thanksgiving Day service, November 24th

 - An acolyte training was held on Saturday, November 26th, with MyChi Haan, Alex Benjamin, Erin Dubas and Bobby Dubas attending. MyChi and Alex were trained as torch bearers, and Erin and Bobby as servers.
Our upcoming Acolyte Training will be held on Saturday, January 7, 2012, from 11 AM to Noon. Please Note: The acolyte vestments have been moved from the closet downstairs to the Chapel, swapping places with the choir robes. This new arrangement will make it more convenient for our young acolytes to vest.
- Many thanks to Nancy Burch, Winnie Lebo, Elisabeth Nguyen and Bobby Dubas for serving as our Stewardship Drive speakers on the four Sundays of November. The Stewardship Letter and 2012 Pledge Cards have been mailed out this week. Upon receiving them, please consider prayerfully your contribution to God's work at St. Patrick's in the year of 2012. Your prompt return of the pledge card will enable our Stewardship Committee to establish the budget for the coming year.
 - It is now time to schedule Coffee Hour servers for January, February, March and April of 2012. Please sign up to serve. Many thanks to all of you who have volunteered to help the church in this important ministry. The sign-up sheet is in the kitchen, next to the micro-wave oven.
- Safety in our parking lot. Drivers who approach or leave the church on Sunday, please give extra attention to those who walk in the area and please drive slowly, with your foot ready on the brake pedal. Please park your car with the parking brakes applied. Walkers on the parking lot, especially those with children, please make sure that the drivers see you, and that the children are not running, and please let the cars pass by before proceeding.  - Bishop Gulick will visit St. Patrick's this Sunday at 3:00 PM (Worship service will not be held in the morning). Your prayers are requested for the following candidates: Sophia Ellis, for baptism; Erin Dubas, for confirmation; and Karla Tsai, for baptism and confirmation. Please bring food, if you can, for the reception following the service. Candidates, sponsors and presenters: Please be at church at 2:00 PM, for rehearsal with Tinh+.
 - Star Making will be held on Saturday, December 10th, at 10 AM. There will be activities for children following the workshop. Bring your own lunch (and a dozen cookies to share).
- This year's Annual Meeting will be held on Sunday, December 11th, after church. There will not be an election of vestry members, since all of the incumbents have not yet finished their terms.- On Saturday, December 17th, there will be a fund-raising event at Saint Patrick's to help victims of the tsunami and the poor in Indonesia. The event is organized by Mr. Tyler Fox, Assistant to Bishop Jones and Bishop Gulick. The program will include Indonesian food and traditional music, and will be from 1 PM to 3 PM. Tickets: $25.00 per person. All are invited to attend. For further information and RSVP, please contact Tyler at 703-824-1325. - Blue Christmas Service, Wednesday, December 21st, 7:30 PM. If you or someone you know finds Christmas a difficult time, St. Patrick's invites you to attend this service. It is a time to join together to listen to prayers and scripture that acknowledge God's presence, even in times when we mourn and/or experience struggle. (Note: the date of the service has been changed to December 21st. It was formerly scheduled for Dec. 14th). - Westlawn Elementary School has approached us to ask if  we would be interested in helping them out in two areas of need. First, and most important to them, is a supply of underwear and sweatpants in sizes appropriate for children, boys and girls, from Kindergarten through third or fourth grade. The counselors keep a supply of these items on hand for those children who have bathroom accidents.
The second area of need is for stocking caps and gloves/mittens. The counselors were wondering if we might be able to help out with the caps and gloves. If we are willing to help, we could either get the clothing ourselves, or provide the school with the funds and the counselors would do the shopping. Checks should be made payable to Saint Patrick's, earmarked "Westlawn Clothing," and placed in the alms basin during worship, or mailed to St. Patrick's Church, 3241 Brush Drive, Falls Church, VA 22042. Thank you.  - Christmas Flowers. You are invited to offer flowers at Christmas, in thanksgiving for God's blessings or in memory of your loved ones. Please send $10.00 to the church with a note stating your name, the names of those remembered, and/or the blessings to be mentioned. You may also email your request to Fr.  - Please mark your calendar: Children from Uganda will perform traditional African music and dance at Saint Patrick's on Friday, January 27, 2012, at 7:30 PM. This will be a fundraiser. The purpose of the event is to raise awareness of the effects of HIV/AIDS on children in developing nations around the world, and to advocate for international assistance to end the devastating effects of the disease on children. The event is organized by Children of Uganda, a non-profit organization in the United States, with the support of St. Patrick's Vestry and Music Director. More information on this performance will come later.
- In 2012, Saint Patrick's will participate in Volunteers of America's Hypothermia Shelter Program, providing sleeping spaces for the homeless during Lent. Supervised by Volunteers of America, a group of about 20 women will come to Saint Patrick's every Friday, Saturday and Sunday evening during the month of March, 2012, to stay overnight in the church. There will be opportunities for St. Patrick's members to volunteer in this ministry. Please speak with Tinh+ for details.
- A Prayer Request. Your prayers are request for Rev. Ricky Tai, who was seriously injured in a traffic accident in Toronto, Canada, in June, 2011. After hospitalization, surgery and rehab, his health has not yet been completely restored. Ricky was seminarian at Saint Patrick's in the spring semester of 2009, when he attended the Virginia Theological Seminary.
- Your prayers are requested for Mr. Tam Khac Le, nephew of Tinh Huynh+, who suffered from a stroke recently. Tam and his family are living in Vietnam. - A prayer request for Garway Thomas, son of our Pauline Thomas, who will soon deployed to Afghanistan, to serve a one-year term. The deployment will delay the wedding of Garway and his fiancee Lechien, which was planned to take place in July 2012. Please also pray for our Cate Johnson, who is currently living and working in Pakistan. - Many thanks to our electrician Loc Phan, who replaced all the dimmer switches in the sanctuary with regular ones. We hope this will solve the problem we have been having with the spiral fluorescent light bulbs. We also thank our Joe Hiller, who changed the light bulbs high up on the church ceiling. We also thank Steve Lebo for making our Treasurer's new computer work with the faithful vintage laser printer. - A thank you note to Wanda Nolan, Pat Gardner and Kim-Anh Huynh for accompanying the Vicar for a visit with our Katie Wright at Heatherwood Rehab Center in Burke, Virginia, on November 12th; and to Chris Nicholson and Park Hoovler, for the visit with our Bob Aronstein, in Silver Spring, Maryland, on November 16th. - Many thanks to our parishioners and friends of Saint Patrick's for their prayers for the successful surgeries of our Winnie Lebo and our Jonathan Miller's cousin Leslie Hogan. Both of them are recuperating well and looking forward to complete restoration of health. - Many thanks to our parishioners who participated in feeding the homeless on November 19th. Food was prepared at Saint Patrick's kitchen, and was delivered to Bailey's Crossroads Community Center on the same day. Some of our volunteers were also at the center to serve the food.

Advent 1 -- Year B -- November 27, 2011
Stewardship Sunday. Text: Mark 13:24-37
In our Prayer Book there is a devotion for the evening that concludes with a prayer, which reads, "Lord Jesus, stay with us, for evening is at hand and the day is past; be our companion in the way, kindle our hearts, and awaken hope, that we may know you as you are revealed in Scripture and the breaking of bread." (BCP, Page 138).
The prayer reflects an Easter story in the Bible: two disciples on their way home from Jerusalem, full of fear and anxiety over the crucifixion of Jesus, met and walked the risen Lord but did not recognize Him, even when He used scripture to explain about the Messiah. It was dark as they arrived in the village, and the two men insisted that Jesus come in to stay. At the dinner table, Jesus took the bread and broke it. Their eyes were then opened, and they recognized him, but he vanished from their sight. Surprised and amazed, they left the house immediately and ran to tell their friends that they saw the Lord. Reflecting the story, the prayer speaks to a prominent aspect of our spiritual life: Hope.
The notion of hope may not be in the minds of many people of today. Life is so hectic that we just don't have time to think about hope. Oftentimes the pragmatic minds are more attentive to down-to-earth issues. Nevertheless, we are desperate for peace. We struggle with the emptiness we feel inside. Such emptiness reveals itself in the chaos that abounds - conflict, greed, the thirst of power, the yearning for approval, the Black Friday shopping spree and fightings, and so on. While Christmas music and decoration come charmingly at this time of the year, we gather in church to speak about something completely different. We speak about the second coming of Christ, and about hope.
The word "Advent" means "coming." We are living in the end times. We cannot explain exactly when and how the end will happen, but we hold that it is true and that it is a mystery: Christ has died, Christ is risen, Christ will come again.
 Advent reminds us how blessed we are. Yesterday we held a training for our acolytes. As I observed the newly recruited trying on their acolyte vestments, I realized how blessed we are at Saint Patrick's. I, for one, am so blessed to be in this church, to serve as your minister, and to see our youth on their journey to adulthood.
We have many reasons to give thanks to God. We give thanks for those who serve in our community, who proclaim Christ's love in what they do. Through their ministries, we have touched the lives of many people, in and outside the community, caring for the vulnerable and the poor. We give thanks also for God's grace that enables us to be faithful in the prayers, in the breaking of Bread, and in assisting each other in learning to follow the footsteps of our Lord. Looking into the future, we do hope, because we recognize that God is at work among us.
The words of Jesus in the Gospel of Mark give strong warning about the day of the Lord. The original readers of Mark were exhorted to be attentive to the signs of the end -- "The sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light, and the stars will be falling from heaven, and the powers in the heavens will be shaken." Such warning is not intended to instigate fear, but to give encouragement. Jesus emphasizes that no one knows when the end will happen.
Twenty years ago, when I was a seminarian I attended a three-week summer course called "Clinical Pastoral Education," which was held at the National Lutheran Home in Gaithersburg, Maryland. I carpooled with three other seminarians, from a parking lot of a shopping plaza in Springfield, Virginia, to the training site. We noticed an Asian man standing on Braddock Rd., at the exit leading to the Beltway. He carried a board with a message that read, "Repent. The end comes October 26, 1991." We saw him every morning of those days, at the same place.
Jesus does not tell us to look at the calendar, or to count the numbers in the Bible or read the stars, for a surmise of his coming. Jesus tells us to keep awake.
How do we keep awake?
Advent is not concerned about how strong your faith is, or how well you are known as a "good Christian." Advent is about God's faithfulness. God is so faithful that even when you do not see God, God still assists you in one way or another. What then should we do with the blessings that we receive?
In our Prayer Book, the Eucharistic Prayer C reads, "Open our eyes to see your hand at work in the world about us. Deliver us from the presumption of coming to this Table for solace only, and not for strength; for pardon only, and not for renewal. Let the grace of this Holy Communion make us one body, one spirit in Christ, that we may worthily serve the world in his name." This prayer is also a teaching for us. Waiting for the coming of Christ is not passive waiting. Neither is it mere God talk. Waiting for the coming of Christ is waiting with action, ministering to ourselves and to others. It is about seeing God's presence and act accordingly, in this very world.
This life is not ours. All that we have come from God. God has put in our hands the things he entrusts to us, for use in His Name. The world urges you to do what ever you want with your life and with what you possess. Yet the faithful who keeps awake says God has a purpose for each person's life. God is interested in each life, and God works through the lives of God's people. This is why many people throughout the centuries have offered their lives to God when they perceive His presence and hear His call to serve. Overcoming fear, they step out of their comfort zone and go into remote places to preach the Gospel. There are also people who offer their time and energy in serving the sick and helping the poor in the Name of Christ; and there are people who pray for those sent out, and support them.
There is a connection between keeping awake and the practice of prayer. Are we always prayerful in what we do to others, in what we say to others, and in what we think about others? The Christian life is supposed to be a life-long Advent.
Hymn 707, which we will sing at today's Communion, speaks well to our Christian end-time living:
"Take my life, and let it be
consecrate, Lord, to thee;
take my moments and my days,
let them flow in ceaseless praise.
Take my hands, and let them move
at the impulse of thy love;
take my heart, it is thine own:
it shall be thy royal throne."
Christian waiting is not about sitting around to dream and talk about being taken to heaven, where streets are supposed to be paved with gold (!).
Christian waiting is about offering our lives to God, and doing the best we can to serve God and serve the world as we live on earth. Keeping awake is about putting into practice our prayer and our hope, here and now. Amen.

Nhân dịp nầy chúng ta nhắc nhau về cái đẹp của sự yên lặng trong nhà thờ. Trong các nghi thức của Sách Lễ có những chỗ ấn định phút yên lặng. Theo tục lệ của Hội Thánh, khi bước vào thánh đường các tín hữu cúi đầu chào thánh giá, và quỳ xuống cầu nguyện. Trước giờ lễ xin quư vị vào chỗ ngồi và giữ yên lặng. Nếu cần nói chuyện với ai, xin mời họ ra pḥng ngoài để nói. Trong giờ lễ, xin đừng vỗ tay cho ai đàn hát, v́ điều đó không hiệp lễ. Chúng ta chỉ vỗ tay trong giờ thông cáo sau khi lễ chấm dứt. Kể từ nay, các em acolyte sẽ mặc áo lễ trong Chapel, thay v́ phải đi xuống tầng lầu bên dưới. - Nhà thờ cám ơn bà Nancy Burch, bà Winnie Lebo, cô Elisabeth Hồng Phước Nguyễn, và em Bobby Dubas, đă tŕnh bày cảm tưởng về các mục vụ Nhà Thờ Thánh Patrick trong Mùa Cổ Động Dâng Hiến, vào tháng 11 vừa qua. Lá thư Dâng Hiến của Trưởng Ban Chấp Hành đă được gởi đến quư vị trong tuần nầy, kèm theo phiếu hứa dâng cho năm 2012. Xin quư vị điền vào và gởi ngay cho nhà thờ để Ban Chấp Hành có thể thiết lập ngân sách cho năm tới. - Nhà thờ cám ơn các quư vị đă t́nh nguyện giúp cho giờ trà đàm sau lễ. "Giờ Cà Phê" là một mục vụ rất quan trọng trong Hội Thánh. Xin quư vị điền tên vào lịch tŕnh cho tháng Giêng, Hai, Ba và Tư của năm 2012. Lịch tŕnh nầy có ở trong bếp, bên cạnh ḷ microwave. - Về vấn đề lái xe tại nhà thờ. Xin quư vị lái xe cẩn thận lúc ra vào băi đậu xe của nhà thờ. Trải qua nhiều năm chúng ta chưa hề bị tai nạn tại đây, song chúng ta phải luôn luôn đề pḥng, nhất là trong Hội Thánh có một số quư vị cao niên lái xe. Khi đến hoặc rời nhà thờ, xin lái xe thật chậm, bàn chân phải sẵn sàng trên bàn đạp thắng, coi chừng người đi bộ, nhất là trẻ con. Quư vị đi bộ trên băi đậu xe của nhà thờ nên để ư, nh́n người lái xe xem họ có thấy ḿnh không. Nếu quư vị có các em nhỏ, xin giữ cho các em đừng chạy. Nếu có xe đang tới, hăy dừng cho xe đi ngang qua rồi mới tiếp tục. - Blue Christmas Service, Wednesday, December 21st, 7:30 PM. Chữ "blue" trong Anh Ngữ nói lên nỗi buồn man mác. Blue Christmas Service là một buổi lễ cho những ai buồn trong lúc mọi người khác rộn rịp mừng Giáng Sinh. Nếu quư vị cảm thấy Giáng Sinh là lúc khó khăn cho ḿnh, nhà thờ hoan nghênh quư vị đến dự lễ vào tối thứ tư, 21 tháng 12. Chúng ta sẽ cầu nguyện và nghe lời Thánh Kinh về sự hiện diện của Thiên Chúa, ngay cả lúc chúng ta than khóc hay có những phấn đấu nội tâm. - Vào tối thứ sáu, 27 tháng 1, 2012, lúc 7 giờ 30, tại Nhà Thờ Thánh Patrick sẽ có một buổi tŕnh diễn của các em Phi Châu từ xứ Uganda. Đây là một buổi tŕnh diễn gây quỹ giúp trẻ em nghèo tại Uganda, nhất là các em cô nhi bị bệnh AIDS. Sinh họat nầy do Hội Children of Uganda tổ chức, với sự hỗ trợ của Nhà Thờ Thánh Patrick. - Nhà Thờ Thánh Patrick sẽ cho người vô gia cư trú đêm tránh rét trong Mùa Thống Hối 2012. Chương tŕnh nầy do tổ chức Volunteers of America sắp xếp và . Sẽ có khoảng 20 phụ nữ đến ngủ qua đêm trong nhà thờ vào mỗi tối thứ sáu, thứ bảy, và Chúa Nhật của tháng 3. Họ có người hướng dẫn, song cu~ng cần người trong nhà thờ t́nh nguyện giúp thêm. Đây là một dịp tiện cho các thành viên phục vụ. Để biết thêm chi tiết, xin gặp Mục Sư. - Xin quư vị cầu nguyện cho Mục Sư Ricky Tai, người đă phục vụ tập sự tại Nhà Thờ Thánh Patrick trong 3 tháng của năm 2009, khi ông học tại Chủng Viện Virginia. Mục Sư Tai, người Trung Hoa, đă bị tai nạn xe hơi trầm trọng ở Toronto, Ca Na Đa, hồi tháng 6. Sau khi nằm nhà thương, mổ và thời gian ở viện hồi phục, ông vẫn chưa hoàn toàn b́nh phục, v́ bị gẫy xương nhiều chỗ. - Xin quư vị cầu nguyện cho ông Lê Khắc Tâm, cháu của Mục Sư Huỳnh Trang Tỉnh, bị stroke ở Việt Nam, xin Chúa cho sớm b́nh phục. - Chúng ta cu~ng cầu nguyện cho anh Garway Thomas, con của bà Pauline Thomas là thành viên Nhà Thờ Thánh Patrick, là quân nhân sắp đi Afghanistan - thời gian phục vụ ở đó là một năm. Lệnh hành quân nầy sẽ khiến cho Garway và vị hôn thê Lechien phải hoăn ngày cưới, đă định cho tháng 7, 2012. Xin cu~ng cầu nguyện cho bà Cate Johnson, thành viên Nhà Thờ chúng ta, hiện đang phục vụ tại Pakistan, là nơi rất nguy hiểm cho người Mỹ lúc nầy. - Hội Thánh cám ơn anh Lộc Phan đă đổi các công tắc trong nhà thờ để giải quyết vấn đề các bóng đèn xoắn bị hư, phải thay hoài. Nhà thờ cám ơn ông Joe Hiller đă trèo thang lên trần cao để thay bóng đèn, và cám ơn ông Steve Lebo giúp làm cho computer mới của thủ quỹ chạy được với chiếc máy in dùng xưa nay. - Mục Sư cám ơn quư bà Wanda Nolan, Pat Gardner và Kim-Anh Huỳnh đă tháp tùng đi thăm cụ bà Katie Wright ở Burke, Virginia, vào ngày 12 tháng 11, và cám ơn quư ông Chris Nicholson và Park Hơovler, tháp tùng đi thăm cụ ông Bob Aronstein ở Silver Spring, Maryland, vào ngày 16 tháng 11. - Hội Thánh cám ơn tất cả các quư vị đă cầu nguyện cho bà Winnie Lebo và bà Leslie Hogan trong các cuộc giải phẫu tuần qua. Kết quả giải phẫu ung thư tốt đẹp, và các vị trên đang trên đường b́nh phục. - Cám ơn quư thành viên Nhà Thờ Thánh Patrick đă tham dự làm thức ăn cho người vô gia cư vào ngày 19 tháng 11. Đại Ư Kinh Văn Chúa Nhật Vừa Qua

Chúa Nhật Thứ Nhất của Mùa Trông Đợi Mác 13:24-37 Mùa Trông Đợi đă đến. Nhà Thờ trang hoàng màu tím. Chúng ta thắp một ngọn nến, và gọi nó là ngọn nến hy vọng. Ai cu~ng chờ lễ Giáng Sinh, cố quên những nỗi đau, và mong một dịp vui để được khuây khỏa. Nhưng Mùa Trông Đợi có ư khác hẳn: chúng ta chờ Đức Giêsu trở lại.
Những tín hữu thời xưa trông Chúa trở lại. Hội Thánh ngày xưa tin rằng Đức Giêsu sẽ tái lâm ngay trong đời của họ. Trải qua biết bao thử thách và bách hại, họ chờ măi. Cuối cùng, họ kết luận rằng Chúa chưa đến là v́ Tin Mừng cứu rỗi phải được truyền ra khắp thế gian trước đă.
Chúng ta hiểu sự trông Chúa trở lại như thế nào?
Người trông đợi đăt ḷng tin nơi người hứa trở lại. Mức độ mỏi ṃn xao xuyến giống như người vợ lính trông chồng, như người thân chờ bệnh nhân ngoài pḥng mổ.
Trông đợi và nỗi đau đi đôi với nhau.
Trong Đoạn Kinh Thánh thứ nhất đọc hôm nay, dân Do Thái than văn v́ họ chờ măi không thấy Chúa đến giải cứu họ, trong khi bị quân Assyria từ phương bắc đe dọa. Tác giả Thi Thiên nói rằng ông và những người Do Thái khác trông chờ Chúa cứu giúp, đến nỗi húp nước mắt của chính ḿnh từng tô đầy. Ngày nay chúng ta cu~ng hỏi, "Chúa ở đâu?" Chúa ở đâu mà để cho những đau thương xảy ra cho nhân thế? Chúa ở đâu mà để cho người lương thiện phải bị đầy ải, phải chịu bao nỗi bất công ức hiếp?
Gần đây tôi đọc được một bài viết trong đó tác giả nói rằng bà quá bận rộn và lúc nào cu~ng mong được một cuộc sống tốt hơn. Cả đời bà mơ cảnh ḿnh ao ước, mà nó cứ ở măi chân trời. T́nh cờ, một hôm bà gặp một bài thơ có câu: "Ước ǵ hồi xưa tôi đă không chán ghét những ngày thuở ấy." Hóa ra bà cu~ng giống tác giả bài thơ -- đă đánh mất tất cả những phút huy hoàng của quăng đời đă qua, chỉ v́ không thấy được cái huy hoàng đó để tận hưởng: chuyến đi chơi với gia đ́nh; nụ cười ngây thơ của trẻ con; cử chỉ tốt của người lái xe khác trên đường; lời nói thân thiện và lời chúc mừng Thanksgiving của một người lạ trong tiệm thực phẩm; ḷng tốt của người đă nên vợ nên chồng với ḿnh. Ôi, ta đă không để ư, không thấy vui ǵ với những cái nhỏ nhỏ đó; mà ta cứ phàn nàn oán trách, căm giận về những chuyện dĩ văng mà ḿnh không làm ǵ được. Ta không chấp nhận được hiện tại, rồi ta để cho những sợ hăi chồng chất mỗi ngày. Đó không phải là trông đợi Chúa.
Cuộc hành tŕnh trông đợi của người theo Đức Kitô không phải là một lối đi ḷng ṿng, bước tới bước lui lẩn quẩn. Trông đợi là tiến bước. Ta chấp nhận hiện tại, cho dù hiện tại khó đến đâu. Ôm lấy cả nỗi đau, như thể vác thánh giá, ta nhất định trông đợi Chúa. Ta để ư đến những dấu hiệu nho nhỏ về sự hiện diện của Chúa, tận hưởng những cái vui ấy, và ngạc nhiên v́ thấy được chúng.
Cha Henri Nouwen, linh mục Công Giáo người Ḥa Lan (mất năm 1966) đă nói: "Khi ta bắt đầu trông đợi Chúa, th́ Chúa đă đến với ta rồi." Hăy để ngọn nến Trông Đợi hôm nay nhắc ta về đều nói trên. Một tác giả Thi Thiên đă nói: "Nầy là ngày CHÚA đă dựng nên, con sẽ vui mừng và tạ ơn Chúa hôm nay." Đó có thể là câu kinh nhật tụng cho chúng ta. |
