The Vision of St. Patrick's

Saint Patrick's Episcopal Church is a community of care, called to be Christ-centered and multicultural in worship, Christian education and action to proclaim Christ's love to the world.

About St. Patrick's Church

Saint Patrick's was founded in 1953 as a mission church from the Falls Church.  The congregation met for the first time on January 3, 1954 in the cafeteria of the Graham Road School.  The building was completed in 1956.  Members of St. Pat's have been known for their involvement in outreach ministries since the very early days of the parish.  In 1995, Saint Patrick's became an Anglo-Vietnamese church, and has become more and more multicultural.  Some of us say that St. Pat's is like a window through which we can see God's love.  Other parishioners suggest St. Pat's is a "safe haven" for all who seek peace, a quiet place for those who want to find rest.  Many in the congregation mention caring is what makes St. Patrick's special to them.  Our vision statement reflects what we are in our hearts:  St. Patrick's Episcopal Church is a community of care called to be Christ-centered and multicultural in worship, Christian education and action to proclaim Christ's love to the world."

Meet Your Church -- Westlawn Ministry

Below is our Winnie Lebo's sharing on St. Pat's ministry to the needy children of Westlawn Elementary School,  on Sunday, November 13th.

As Justice was a student at Westlawn Elementary, I found myself doing volunteer work many hours a week at the school.  In the fall of 2006, a member of St. Pat's congregation came to me and said that, every year, she and a group of her friends provided Christmas for a family in need instead of exchanging gifts among themselves.  She asked if I knew of anyone at Westlawn who might need help.  I went to Susan Lawrence, guidance counselor at the time, and asked her if she knew of anyone in need.  Boy--did she know of a need.  She introduced me to a side of Westlawn I didn't know existed.  There was so much need!  I met children whose parents had died, a family who lost their kindergarten aged child in a tragic household accident, a mother and two children living in a car in front of a friend's house.  So many children--so much need!
In 2007, Tinh+ and the vestry were looking for ways to extend St. Pat's outreach ministries.  Many worthwhile ideas were mentioned, but here was a chance to help families right here in our own community, to really make a difference in the lives of many children.
Tinh+ and I met with Susan to see how we might help the children of Westlawn and our partnership was formed.  It became official in the spring of 2011.
Westlawn has approximately 730 students and a staff of 110.  There are 22 home languages.  Vietnamese, Spanish and English are the predominant ones.  Westlawn's ethnicity is comprised of 196 Asians, 413 Hispanics, 65 whites, 12 blacks and 25 listed as "other".  Of these children, 60% have limited English proficiency.  But the most telling fact is that a little more that 65% participate in the free or reduced fees breakfast and/or lunch program.
Over our few years of working for these children, we have provided hundreds of dollars in gift cards from Giant, Safeway, Shoppers and Target.  We have collected  used coats and clothing, sweatpants and underwear, hats and gloves.  We have collected enough used books to enable children with no books at home to pick out one or two for themselves to keep.  We sponsor an Angel Tree Project every year for families who wouldn't have Christmas presents otherwise.  We have sponsored a family in need with clothes, rent and food.  We have provided clothes, food and a handicapped access ramp for a single paraplegic mother of three. We host an annual art show for the Westlawn children.
The staff at Westlawn continues to express surprise that such a small church with such a small congregation is able to accomplish so very much for such a needful segment of our community.  It is with great pride and thankfulness that I am able to reply that while our numbers may be small, our hearts are huge.
Thank you for your continued support of such a worthwhile outreach ministry.
           Thanks,
            Winnie

From Our Patricia Phan

                                         Saturday, November 5, 2011

Dear Saint Patrick's Episcopal Church,

Greetings from Ringling College of Art and Design!  It has been a long while since the last time I was at church.  Patricia PhanHow have you all been keeping?  I have been meaning to write a letter for the longest time ever since I received the lovely letter and delicious package of cookies from you all -- unfortunately I was swamped with school projects.  So I apologize for the late response.
So what's new with Patricia Phan?  Well, for those who do not know or remember, I am a third year illustration major.  One more year and I graduate!  It is certainly cliché to say this but: time has really flown by rather too quickly.  I am enjoying every moment, every second of it though!  This fall semester I am taking 6 classes: computer illustration, illustration, figure painting, history of architecture, classical mythology (Greek mythology), and world watch (a course that keeps you updated about what is going on around the world today).
Last month, I entered the school's illest of Illustration Art Show by submitting three personal works of art, and, to my astonishment, one of them was chosen (which I enclosed along with this letter).  My piece was juried by renowned illustrators along with other chosen artist's works for the art exhibition gallery on campus.  I actually had no idea that I would be selected.  I was surprised and happy.  This month I also submitted a piece for the school's annual Judaica Scholarship Competition.  The them was to illustrate "any story from the Book of Genesis."  I chose the story of Noah's Ark and illustrated a scene where the dove flies back to Noah the second time with an olive branch (which I have also put in with this letter).  Unfortunately, I did not win anything.  I did, however, learn what the judges liked.  That said, next year's illustration will be 100 times better and I will hopefully earn something.
I would like to thank you for the package of cookies, your "best wishes" "good luck" card, and for your thoughts of me.  I miss you all -- I will see you over winter break this year.  Thank you again!   Patricia Phan
